My son Alan, 27, has all the same characteristics of Autism, that he's had since first diagnosed. His level of functioning is between 3-8 years of age...he is 27 years old. He too was refused an Autism service dog...because of his age...yet his developmental skills/social skills/cognitive skills are that of a young child. Alan also has Seizures...and an Autism Service Dog would be the best friend to a fantastic young man, Alan !
@dannyboy2902@dannyboy2902 Check out Wilderwoods they train them for autistic adults. We are applying to them for the next dog! They are the best organization out there
@coconutponi There are some organization that train them for adults the issue is that they are hard to find. I will send you links to te to places I like and am going to aply to for my next dog
Great video! Too many organizations seem to do it for the money because they can make more money off of cute kids and parents tend to be desperate.
I am an autistic teenager and have had great difficulty in finding programs. The one that I almost got a dog from closed due to lack of funding. This happens to some of the best organizations. There are only a few who will even consider letting me train with them. I am working to help change this.
Excellent video! I have found the same thing as I've been looking for a program to train a dog for me for almost 2 years. I finally decided to just train my own dog. I am going to school to learn to train service dogs, and after I graduate I hope to start a school that trains service dogs ONLY for autistic adults.
@k1maplewd thank you hat organization are you going through? Yeah I know what you mean is is really hard find ones tht train for adults harder one that trains for EVERYTHING you need
The answer to your question is really quite simple. The dogs these organizations are placing are NOT highly task trained. They tack ridiculous price tags on them because nothing opens wallets faster than a "child who needs a dog". It's the "awww factor". Heaven forbid the organization has to actually train the dog to DO something to mitigate a disability.
@cans4acause there are some great organizations tht do train them for adults and kids the same but the ones with age limits need to be looked into more and should be required to answer this
