@swatstuff I haven't been able to locate any information (in the last 15 minutes) that proves the "fail whale" was a part of Twitter prior to the posting of this video; and based on what I have read, the image was originally on iStockPhoto under another name. It is possible that the image might have been seen by Stephen and the idea was stored in his long-term memory, or it may just be that Stephen, being as creative as he is, designed it.

i'm guessing that he edited every layer in photohop (frame by frame), then tracked the footage in AFX, and finally the frames were imported into AFX, and put in order to simmulate the unfolding effect.

This also can be easily achieved by animating different layers of masks on a single layered file.

Actually it is, never thought of it, but yes. You can either save the frames off of photoshop or AFX.
