This is my last lifetime. I will not be reincarnated again. Even if I was nothing more than the aborted fetus of a whore I will not be born again...Nirvana awaits
this topic can be polarising/sensitive. i'm an atheist myself, thank god, but religion has played a part in my life - when i was young and had no choice for example.
i think people owe it to themselves to investigate matters and develop a logic and philosophy of sorts. i've tried to do so and i enjoy it.
imo it's many things; a club, a way of remaining servile, part of one's identity or culture, means to respectability.
Dan Summers of Lynchburg, VA owns Quality Archery Design. I am a machine shop owner and tool maker. I built some prototype tooling for Dan. He wrote me a $10,000 bad check and he also shop lifted close to $4,000 worth of tools and jigs then laughed in my face. The judicial system would do nothing to him becouse he was a Jerry Farwell worshiper. He was above the law. Actually I was the only one charged in the incident. He charged me with phone harassment for calling him about my stolen property.
Religion can exist without threat of punishment; however, the idea of posing a threat as a means to earn followers is evidence that the religion has ulterior motives.
you are right religion can exist without the threat but it's still less likely many would follow religion without the threat of punishment. thxs for posting :)

i agree. the one time i questioned my athism it was because of the fear of hell, but when you stop and think for a second, you come to the conclution that there is no heaven or heal, nor a god or a devil!
Motivation can be accomplished through both reward and punishment. Reward works for the passive types but you need punishment for the violent types. So this way you have all the bases covered. It's a great way to train people, dogs, cats, birds monkeys.... CREATIONISTS!
quick analogy. you go to work everyday and if you don't do your job properly there are repercussions.but what would happen if you could'nt get fired? or lose wages? then you'd tend to not care as much if you did'nt do your job knowing nothing would happen to you because of it. it's the same of religions threat of punishment.
Threat? Hardly. There are many reasons people follow a paticular faith and yes, one of them is indoctrination, but that's far less insidious than it sounds. Most citizens of westernized nations choose at some point in their lives for themselves, but if you asked a Christina WHY they believe, I don't believe fear of hell would be even in the top 10.
yes but i would say fear of the punishment for not following religion is the main reason and most just won't admit that even to themselves.if there were no threat of punishment most people would probably not even give religion the time of day....
Your cynicism is palpable. I don't believe fear of punishment is the reason turn to faith at all. If it was, people would never leave the faith at any time, only to return later. I believe the reason they return or many others come to faith later is because they sense that it's missing from their lives.
It's a mind control combination. The original Star Trek series had an episode regarding punishment and reward. Remember Captain Pike? The aliens who captured him said something like, "Bad behavior is punished, likewise good behavior is rewarded. You will find this an effective combination". I think it was called, "The Menagerie".
your quite right on the star trek ep brainmold.this particular vid was one of my better thoughts. may make another vid in the future and expand on it a little. but then again this one may have said all that needed saying. thxs for stopping by and commenting :)
i guess the threat of disease does not bother these people as much as the threat of eternal damnation. those people probably believe god will help. go figure.....
I've always wondered the question "Why believe?" as well. All religion does is make you look like an arrogant, bigoted douchebag.

Hmm... Well by the looks of it, someones being votebotted.
Anidem9 2 years ago
yes i have been hit by the votebots on and off over the past few months....

Figures... Religion can't win the way they used to anymore, which is by striking fear into people, so they cheat...

its like a system of control based on threat...just like when santa doesn't deliver gifts if the kids don't behave..

Nothing like a little fire and brimestone to get people on their knees... Yes I agree. Without the threat gods are nothing.
So do ya feel lucky punk? Well do ya? LOL...

Hardly a threat? Eternal flames with no relief, eternal seperation from God? I tell you, if that doesn't get someone to believe, shit will.
HumbleYankee 4 years ago
yes but if there were no threat of eternal flames or any other punishment would you believe?

the punishment for not eating or drinking or sleeping, etc., is death. so is the only reason for life's appeal punishment?

why do you eat? why do you sleep? why do you breathe? living is nothing w/o punishment.
pairunoyd 4 years ago
