deffinitly talented, he's deffinitly the wheelie king, but he deffinitly put his foot down on both attempts after coming through the whoop section. which means he deffinitily failed. Trials riders do this shit with ease, while taking the front of the bike completly off, and no electric motor to make the front wheel gyro for balance, and no crzy huge sproket on the rear for excessive torque, i will still give him props for the bein the wheelie king..
He is the reason we all wheelie. He led the way for all to follow. He stood alone for so long, before we could even get close enough to smell his exhaust. I miss him.
His front hub was rigged with an electric motor which kept the front wheel spinning at a high speed. This had the same stabilizing effect as a gyroscope, preventing the bike from going over backwards. Not as difficult as it looks, but still entertaining. I saw him many times up-close at Broome-Tioga and Unadilla.
LoL @ you loser. Post up a video of you doing this if it isn't as difficult as it looks. And the wheel spinning doesn't stop the bike from going over backwards, the brake does. The wheel spinning stops the bike from going over SIDEWAYS. Lol some people are fuckin tools.
The first time I saw Doug was at the 1979 Oakland Supercross (then at the 1980 Oakland Supercross), and I had never seen anything so cool. In fact, Im still not convinced that Ive seen anything cooler than that to this day.
I was there, what a small world! I was 9 years old and it was the coolest thing I ever saw. Still my inspiration to this very day. He is the true wheelie king.
@bigphreaking Good knowledge about Mike "Too Tall" Bell because I actually didnt remember who won the 1980 race, but Jimmy "The Jammer" Weinert won in 1979 using a paddle tire on a very sandy track beating Bob "The Hurricane" Hannah who came in second. After that, the AMA banned paddles from competition
@supercrossdog I don't even follow MX anymore. Seems kind of thug now and all of the factory teams and the works bikes are a thing of the past. I miss David Bailey and Broc Glover and Mark Barnett.
@bigphreaking I still follow MX and SX, but I do agree it has changed. Today its more flashy than technical and mostly because of the money thats involved these days. The hardcore riders of yesterday have been turned into spoiled brats like most other pro athletes. Ricky Carmichael was the last rider was more interested in wins over image. Some of the young riders are looking good, so Ill keep watching. Also, I do miss the 2 strokes.
I remember taping that on sportsworld back in 87 or 88ish,Use to study it,wanted a custom sprocket like his on my KX,miss the 2 stroke (manual) wheelies!Didnt know he died,Im going for some big wheelis for him this wekend...RIP Doug and thanks for the inspiration.
I remember reading a dirt wheels article about a kawasaki takate4 they beat the crap out of till it barly ran& sprockets slipped they didnt think He could do a wheelie on it He did, through a muck filled creek!!! over and over!!!!!
I saw Doug several times live, I ride street and dirt. I just think it is funny that he was doing this in the 1980's and everybody thinks they created stunting in 20?! Anyway, its only obvious by his name!
I got to see Doug wheelie a supercross track at the Pontiac silverdome in Michigan in the late 80's, he was even getting some air off the jumps! I could not wait to get home and jump on my YZ80 and try to do what he was doing!! R.I.P. we miss you here in Michigan Doug!!!
I saw him in 1996 at the re-opening of the Lake Elsinore Grand Prix. I was 10.
