these are more fun vids, but I had both vista and xp loaded with my same development platforms. There is a vid showing two Dells running XP kicking everyone's boot time, i will have to look for it.
you can install a far better operating system on the new intel macs... windows xp... but then you ll working on an xp computer that you payed 3 times the normal hardware price just for a little piece of aluminium...
there is no logic buying any of the macs...
only if you want to find a girl saying that "you got a mac"...
That's another story but yeah video card issue is making it a hard decision. So I guess what I'm getting at is it would be great if you could do the latest video card comparison and possible explain the pros and cons of the latest chipsets vs. ageing ones.
CONT. I'm actually in the process of building a new PC at the moment and stuck weather to go with the new DDR3 ram and maybe the new Intel X38/X48 chipset or stay with the constantly dropping in price DDR2 and 680i chipset variant. I'm keen on the new 9800 series coming but again I guess more aimed at gamers then video renderers.
If possible could you do a video on graphic card comparison? In contrast I'm interested in knowing which is better suited to my work, which is primarily video encoding; flash animation and I also do a bit of work in Maya. I also want to game at acceptable FPS but gamming isn't my most wanted feature of my video card.
did you notice zoul that tiger beat leopard on the g5, too bad i did not time my macbook on tiger i could partition it, but meh , not really worth it.
Wow pretty impressive. My 2ghz xp dell inspiron boots up around 2 minutes even after extensive configuration and maintenance on my part. I have a question though is the reason vista boots slower because it has more eye candy? I need a new desktop and am trying to decide to get a mac or new vista pc. This question is mainly to zoul, mrbit and those who have both.
Vista makes XP look like dog poo in boot times. MS improved a lot. I am working on a review and will post a vid soon. It has to do with hardware mounting, addressing which involves drivers and initialization. Mac is very limited in hardware, thus less to do. Even Linux takes some time to mount because it has a huge driver base to mount initialize and run.
That all depends on what you want to do in computing, I would say buy mac hardware as both OSs can run on it and you can slowly learn OSX or may completely not like it all but your hardware will be under warranty and will run vista. If you game a lot and want crossfire or sli than you must go with a pc. That said Apple has some very nice support gaming cards.
Geez xp is bad i just timed mine with a stop watch it was a tick over six minutes. I had no idea how slow it was. haha I was kinda leaning toward the mac so I could do windows and os x. Then put linux ubuntu on my laptop. But they are just so expensive for what you get and have limits to the upgrade.
Depends on what you are looking for in a desktop. The mac pro is a workstation and therefore is not a very good solution for desktop use. The imacs are good but limited in upgradeability. I would say that for a desktop a windows PC is the best but it really depends on what you are looking for. Are you going OEM or custom build?
The mac pro can with the right vid card will game well. You mentioned graphics & video and Mac does that very well. But the pro is more than 2k. An Imac can be made almost as powerful for less.
Actually few games can actually take advantage of the quad core. I would recommend one of 3 solutions. Find a local place that can customize a system for you. Research extensively for what you need. If you are only looking to spend 2 grand a custom built PC from your local area may be well below that range and they usually charge a minimal system building fee. You lose all the trial ware by doing this as well.
So you say I can build my own cheaper then oem such as dell? If this is so how difficult is the drivers as opposed to an oem setup? Also how hard is it to run os x on a custom built pc? Dx 10 is vista only, right?
If this isn't too difficult then it would be the perfect option. As I really need more power then the Imac too bad apple doesn't have more options.
Difficulty depends on how comfortable you are with hardware, setting jumpers and installing the drivers on vista. There is a hack for leopard but it will not perform as well and can be tedious to install. How much power are you looking for when you say you need more power?
Not so much more power as just prolonging replacement. I was really looking for quad core and at least 512 vram. Dual core and 256 would be a step up from what I am running now but I just want to make sure this system will last at least 5 yrs. My laptop is 1.9 p4 1gb ram 64mb vram and it does fine for most things I do but is getting really sluggish on some things. The processor stays pegged at 100% on some of the programs I use.
I am fine with installing jumpers and drivers but I just need something reliable. My dell pcs have not been so reliable and has cost me a lot of down time... which is why I started looking at mac in the first place...along with final cut.
well... yea Dell used to be very good. Zoul is right in that there are a few good clone builders out there. I am bias to the mac in that you can run both OSs and reliability is top notch. Not to say Clone builders may not be just as bood, but I did a vid showing Apple reliability in hardware part 2.
as far as quad software is not there yet and will not be for a while unless its adobe PS or something like that. Core 2 is still to recent and for your goal of 5 years the 2.4 Imac will do the trick. If you want graphics esp final cut of which i use a lot go apple. As far as upgrades I can see an upgrade of vid for games or graphics in the future, but you could always go with an apple cert dealer.
The dealer could install the card for cheaper than Apple or go with apple if you have applecare as to not void the warranty if you buy it. That said, I have upgraded my vid cards twice with my computers win pc or mac my AMD has played many games on 128, only my gaming rig for vegas and GRAW 2, vegas is a hardware hog. moreover you may find yourself using os x more and then not really need to worry about upgrading as much as i still use G4s from 2000
If you go win PC go asus for mobo on the quad and i am bias to ati specifically HIS models for video cards. Go ballistix on the ram. That said you will be stuck with windows until Linux fits your needs via apps and support.
Again you stated Final Cut the only way to get that is Apple. I really wish they make a mid tower soon, but for now if you go apple go with the Imac.
Thanks for the advice you guys have really helped me out. I'm pretty sure about what to do now. Once I get my new system up and running, I will post a video of it.
Or if you are looking for something where you have to work very little with the hardware. The imac may be a viable option. Keep in mind you can probably put faster memory in the custom build from your local PC vendor. However you wont really have to worry about drivers with the mac.
Yes, the mac pro is too costly of a computer for most and that would leave with the Imac, but the Imac is a great machine and can be made to be very powerfull but it is a Zoul said not very upgradeable on your own. Apple or Apple certified shop can easily upgrade it though.
Both booted up in under a minute which is very good. However I took about 3 seconds off my windows when I turned off the legacy ide. So bios screens do slow things down a bit. They have to give you enough time to hit a key to enter setup. Where macs do not.
yep my asus screen is dumb, but I figure it is about 2 seconds but not enough to make it that impressive. I mean my macbook was super quick, my g5 not so much but still good enough. XP was just worthless in the challenge...lol.
the windows bootup process is HORRIBLE. Macs are so much smoother atstartup. No black screen saying "your machine wasnt shut down properly" etc. Winpcs are just terrible for anything except games.
Awesome you even calculated my time. lol. I guess its more like 10 seconds or more difference between vista and mac. Bootup time aint bad for either.
Make a video over Windows 7 rtm vs mac os x!!!

This goes in line with the need for a mid tower from apple you could send tons of people to it.
mrbit10 4 years ago
OEM more then likely as I am only looking to spend about 2 grand. I was looking at the dell xps 420 quad core or the imac 2.8
I game some but mostly will use it for work, graphics, video, web publishing.

True on both sides apple or win pc with quad, thus my gaming rid does not have one. Yes OEM can be expensive compared to a clone.
