Excellent Job! I love your version of this tune and the finger picking style really matches the song. You and Mill Road should definitely be playing a larger role in the provinces music scene! When are you playing in Eastport I'd like to take it in? Are you doing any other shows outside of GFW this summer?
Very good job. I really like your version of Wild Mountain Tyme and also of Farewell to Nova Scotia. I live in Ontario and have been to Halifax twice and enjoy it everytime.
This is among the most beautiful melodies of the last century - but performances usually drown in Celtic Twilit sentiment.
This is very much as it should be performed - with just the lightest of sneers in the lyric.
Your Piedmontese (?) guitar part drives the song along, and counterpoints the voice, without ever intruding. I wish more performers could respect the song this impressively.
You perform this beautifully, but I need to point out, it's a bower (not a tower) that you should be building for your love. A bower can be a trellis-like frame for flowering plants, but it is also (more poetically) a lady's bed. Thus: "I will build my love a bower, By yon clear and crystal fountain, And on it I will place
Oh Ok, well you're forgiven then ;-) It's a beautiful version of a beautiful song, I love your guitar arrangement so much I'm trying to rip off your chords!
and great cover by the way. Judging by your handle, you're a Newf although your accent isn't a heavy one, at least compared to the Newfs I know. Good job!
There is some debate regarding the origins of this piece; for years I thought it was a traditional Scottish piece but lately discovered that it may actually have come from ireland. Where ever the origins it remains to be one of the most beautiful songs I've heard.
The Irish (McPeakes) get credit likely because they were the first to put it to record but I'm pretty sure it's Scottish in origin. One of the problems with these old folk songs is that they have been around so long, the origin becomes a bit murky so whoever records it first typically gets credit.
There is no doubt about the lyrics. They were written by a Robert Tannahill of (Paisley?), and called the "Braes of Balquhidder". He died I believe in 1810, so a bit before McPeake's claims!
And we don't say "lassie" in Ireland, so that should have been a dead giveaway that McPeake was at it!
Honestly, every time i log on to youtube i listen to this. Perhaps the best rendition I have ever heard of this song - and I love the Clancy/Maken Reunion version like its my child. Well Done Sir.
I am off to the studio in the morning to begin my first solo album of original work. It's going to be an acoustic album and it will be available by June 2009 :). Keep an eye out for details as I will be taking preorders.
I love this song and play Scott Tennant's classical arrangement of it (I don't have the voice to do it justice). You bring out so much of its beauty with your wonderful voice and expression. Thanks so much for putting this our for all of us to enjoy.
What a great version of this song. I am a long time Stan and Garnet Rogers fan and that is how I found you on here. I have been listening to each of your songs. They are all great!
Great version and playing, your singing was a great complement to your playing!! Are you playing your own version or off sheet music? Just curious I've been trying different versions and there is one part where it looks like you are grabbing a Dm that just didn't seem right. Great job again though, I enjoyed it. Are those bar glasses in the background?
Hey, thank's for the comments. This is my own arrangement. I have watched the vid a few times again and I don't play a Dm at all. I use D, G, A, F#m, Em, D7 and Bm. Oh, and the glasses in the case have been collected from the Guinness shop in St. John's :)... at least that's my story!! Cheers!
I love all your videos! Thank you for sharing your wonderful voice and playing. Great talent. :) You inspire my Irish fiddle playing, so hopefully if I keep practicing I'll be as good as you one of these days!
Thanks for the comment.... it is known by both titles actually and parts of it closely resemble "The Braes of Balquidder" by Robert Tannahill (1774-1810).
I accidently removed a comment just a second ago - my apologies to the person who left it; I was actually going to reply but it remove instead. My apologies.
