  • Excellent, dude!

  • Wonderful, best version I've heard,

  • Ah, lovely!

  • Fantastic ...

    Well sang and played :))))

  • Excellent Job! I love your version of this tune and the finger picking style really matches the song. You and Mill Road should definitely be playing a larger role in the provinces music scene! When are you playing in Eastport I'd like to take it in? Are you doing any other shows outside of GFW this summer?

  • Very good job. I really like your version of Wild Mountain Tyme and also of Farewell to Nova Scotia. I live in Ontario and have been to Halifax twice and enjoy it everytime.

  • Just Great! What a feel for such a wonderful song.

You gave it a charm all your own. I look forward to

    listening to your other offerings.

  • great cover man!

  • This is among the most beautiful melodies of the last century - but performances usually drown in Celtic Twilit sentiment.

This is very much as it should be performed - with just the lightest of sneers in the lyric.

Your Piedmontese (?) guitar part drives the song along, and counterpoints the voice, without ever intruding. I wish more performers could respect the song this impressively.

  • top notch... excellent..

  • Lovely, lad!

  • great performance, keep it up !

  • Excellent job man, you do it as good as anyone can.

  • this is really good

  • excellent job.

  • your video basically taught me how to play thissong. i used to play an awkward version in key of E before i stumbled onto this. thank you.

  • I love how much emotion you put into your singing. This song always gives me goosebumps! Wonderful job!

  • Well played.

    5 stars.

  • You perform this beautifully, but I need to point out, it's a bower (not a tower) that you should be building for your love. A bower can be a trellis-like frame for flowering plants, but it is also (more poetically) a lady's bed. Thus: "I will build my love a bower, By yon clear and crystal fountain, And on it I will place

All the flowers of the mountain.

  • Thanks. The "tower" faux pas is common around my home province. I had it recorded before I realized the mistake.

  • Oh Ok, well you're forgiven then ;-) It's a beautiful version of a beautiful song, I love your guitar arrangement so much I'm trying to rip off your chords!

  • and great cover by the way. Judging by your handle, you're a Newf although your accent isn't a heavy one, at least compared to the Newfs I know. Good job!

  • Excellent job. One of my favorites to sing as well. Looking forward to seeing you perform in Pasadena....September I believe??

  • Thanks, i am looking forward to performing there.

  • Great singing and playing!!

  • thanks

  • I love your vids! Keep posting!

  • I love this song so much

  • Very nicely done, as usual. Bravo.

  • thanks

  • omg wow bluddy fantastic :D

  • thanks; glad you enjoyed it

  • There is some debate regarding the origins of this piece; for years I thought it was a traditional Scottish piece but lately discovered that it may actually have come from ireland. Where ever the origins it remains to be one of the most beautiful songs I've heard.

  • The Irish (McPeakes) get credit likely because they were the first to put it to record but I'm pretty sure it's Scottish in origin. One of the problems with these old folk songs is that they have been around so long, the origin becomes a bit murky so whoever records it first typically gets credit.

  • @CgyScot

There is no doubt about the lyrics. They were written by a Robert Tannahill of (Paisley?), and called the "Braes of Balquhidder". He died I believe in 1810, so a bit before McPeake's claims!

And we don't say "lassie" in Ireland, so that should have been a dead giveaway that McPeake was at it!

  • Honestly, every time i log on to youtube i listen to this. Perhaps the best rendition I have ever heard of this song - and I love the Clancy/Maken Reunion version like its my child. Well Done Sir.

  • Thanks so much; it's a song i really enjoy singing.

  • WOW! fantastic!

  • Thanks

  • Newfiedude,

if you decide to make a disc, let us know. I'd love a CD of your music!

  • Scotland is quite welcome; glad you enjoyed it!

  • I love this song and play Scott Tennant's classical arrangement of it (I don't have the voice to do it justice). You bring out so much of its beauty with your wonderful voice and expression. Thanks so much for putting this our for all of us to enjoy.

  • Thank you for the kind words. It's always been one of my favorite songs.

  • Thank you for your kind words. This is an arrangment I put together a couple of years ago.

  • my dad used to sing this to my mom....

  • It's such a lovely song isn't it?

  • Beautiful n__n You have a lovely voice, very nice n__n

  • Thank you

  • A lovely version of a lovely song. The song was written by my friends father - Francie McPeake from Belfast

  • It's a beautiful song and I am proud to have it in my repertoire.

  • Great version and playing, your singing was a great complement to your playing!! Are you playing your own version or off sheet music? Just curious I've been trying different versions and there is one part where it looks like you are grabbing a Dm that just didn't seem right. Great job again though, I enjoyed it. Are those bar glasses in the background?

  • Hey, thank's for the comments. This is my own arrangement. I have watched the vid a few times again and I don't play a Dm at all. I use D, G, A, F#m, Em, D7 and Bm. Oh, and the glasses in the case have been collected from the Guinness shop in St. John's :)... at least that's my story!! Cheers!

  • Not used to hearing it at that pace, but it works nicely. Good job.

  • this is called will you go oh lassie go, but you play and sing it fantastic, well done

  • why don't you play the fiddle anymore : (

  • I hear ya, it's been a long time for sure... .but, I will post a few fiddle vids when I have the opportunity :)
