Of course the negative posters here couldn't sing or a play a note in their LIVES, and they illustrate their "loserdom' even FURTHER by commenting on Steely Dan!
The clip was a challenge for I wanted to bypass the 'love story' & bring out the abuse motif in a larger context... now how do I get 'the guys' to hear & watch it is beyond my reach, but it would be a blast indeed ;)
This version is so different that I barely recognize the tune anymore. Too much overplaying on both guitar and vocals. It sounds like they didn't have confidence in the original version to just play that and felt they had to make it more complex. Can't say I really like it better than the original.
Thank you! I saw them perform this song a couple of nights ago and I think these are two of the ladies who were singing it -- it's a real pleasure to have this fine version of the song to remind me of what we saw.
IBecker's been very frank when his "chops are down," as musicians say when they're out of practice and not playing tip-top. SD always has a serious slasher on lead guitar, so no risk to the music if Becker's not quite up to the mark. I'm a 40-year guitar player w/ a jazz album on Chicago's Southport label, & I'd say he's been practicing plenty. Still not up to technique of Jon Herrington, Drew Zingg, etc, but a creditable solo, fluid and reasonably cliche-free. No reason to mimic the record.
what's wrong w/ that bird's hand..... she's doin' vocals and traffic cop duty simultaneously? not sure.
big Dan fan here... but this seems contrived, including Walt on gtr. Two decades late, and two dollars short. Don... the sunglasses at night... your cool comes from compositional and lyrical genius... Corey Hart is a has been, not you. Also, the production/soundboards of recent are overproduced, shiny, polished. Not askin for Skunk/'74... but this it's now Carlton's evil twin.
Not only is this arrangement a nice variation on the original (which probably makes it more interesting for the musicians), it gives the instrumentalists somewhat of 'break' from the heavy playing and the lights. Plus, and this is key and marks Steely Dan as real pros, it is yet another opportunity for the musicians, other than Becker and Fagen, to stand out...to demonstrate and express THEIR creativity.
Too many bands, it's all about the guy at the mic, a pet peeve of musicians.
I absolutely LOVE Steely Dan. And this version SUCKS, big time. How can you say this is the BEST version? Becker is playing way too many notes ( it's becoming his second nature) and the vocals? I don't think so. I'm not the only one, apparently.
I think this arrangement just about makes it because of the excellence of the girl singers. However on this and last year's tour they did seem to be inflicting a jazz-style arrangement on a lot of the songs where it just didn't fit.
@chromeheads Umm at which point did I say ANYTHING regarding my arranging abilities? My comment about their arrangement was completely neutral by the way, but I guess someone as simple minded as you just doesn't quite have a grip on grammar and its usage...I'd suggest a few more years of education for ya you god damn deadbeat.
@chromeheads ummmmmmm when did I ever say anything about my arranging skills? You need to be a little less slower in the head and realize that I made an entirely neutral comment about the arrangement, and then I proceeded to compliment the woman singing in the song. Ifff you onnllyyyy had a bbrain
@psev I bet that was incredible. I love when artists like this collaborate with other great artists. I think that they must get bored playing the same thing over and over and over, so a little variation adds another layer of options on a classic tune. I really like what they did here, but would love to have heard Bonnie do this.
Seems like Dans lyrics are influenced too heavily by food preservatives.
Lines start off as being witty, cool, but quickly die on the vine, or fall off the cliff into pointless ignorance. The music is there like a mother ready to catch a falling baby, though by then its too late, the bed's already been wet.
They have to read the lyrics. The verse is the best part and they were too busy reading the fucking words to get the highs and lows. Oh well, they sing better than I do.
the girls compliment each other so perfectly. all he had to do was pick them. they know how to break it off. cheers - and the guy singing is great too. so soulful.
I love that they feature the band's other singers, JUST LIKE THEY ALWAYS HAVE!! Fagan has never sang this song and I love Lyn Leonhart on the mike. The level of talent on a Steely Dan tour always humbles me as a musician.
Can you idiots NOT expect to hear the EXACT same thing each time? Yeah, go back to yer room and listen to yer records... or whatever. Does your mom know you're using her computer?
Nice to see them showcasing the backup singers - no matter how one interprets this version versus the original (or whatever other version they may reference), it's still nice to see the backups get some "face time".
Actually Donald Fagen didn't sing this on the album, singer David Palmer was the main singer, Fagen only sang the parts he sang on here (backup in chorus)
Speaking of getting older...A very Mega- Ultra-Super Belated yet no less Happy Birthday to the Major Dude. Jan 10th came and went and this older brain forgot.
Incidentally, how many among us can sing songs or hit notes they did when they were four decades younger. It sounds like a back room interrogated when I try. I think DF does an incredible job.
Here! Here! drdan75. Absolutely agree. The quality of Don's vox may change, but he still delivers the goods. I will always love these guys no matter what!
It does sound like Donald Fagen's voice has changed a little bit since Steely Dan first released "Can't Buy a Thrill" over 40 years ago. So what? Fagen and Becker are past 60 now. They are getting older. It's part of life, and it happens to all of us.
I don't know how much longer they will be performing, but like everybody else they can't go on forever. When they're gone, one of the most unique, eclectic acts around will have passed into history. Let's enjoy them while we can.
well, its a guy song, loss when he thinks she needs him.....sorry this it nice but nothing like the original, i agree with lot of folks below....why do a classic if you cant make it awesome...i gonna go listen tio the orig
Strung out? This song is about having an affair. Nice job, but the original still kicks arse. I know Carolyn Leonhart (on the left), but who's the chick on the right?
I really like hearing a female sing the lead on this song, not that I like stories about women strung out any more than some guy strung out. It just sounds easier to believe.
The comic tragic 1970's poor little boy toy version always made me imagine of some guy like Robin Williams in a down vest, hiking boots and big feathered hair playing Midnight Cowboy, but weeping and whining over some trophy wife cutting him off from his allowance and his booty calls.
Hahaha-- except, it's not some American Idol want to be's-- it's Steely Dan, playing their song a different way with some of the best musicians available, whether it rings a bell for the baked potatoes sitting in TVland or not.
@patkeeg1 David Palmer sang this and "Brooklyn" on the dan's first album. Their drummer at the time, Jim Hodder, sang "Midnite Cruiser" and also the single "Dallas". Fagen sings everything else until "Slang of Ages". David Palmer wrote the lyrics for "Jazzman" and then faded into obscurity
I like this version . Very soulful. I'm glad that they have decided to play it live. I could be wrong.. but I think this is a song about being a gigolo. Similar in lyrical theme to Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
I enjoyed it more in concert, it's basically just a nod to the singers and fit well into the show. Donald and Walter don't treat them like hired hands
i think the vocals are pretty fantastic.. the harmonies sound great.. covers aren't always meant to completely mimic the original, and this group put together a solid rendition imo
Technically I don't think you can really consider this a cover since it was the original band performing it. They had a 'guest' singer singing this one when it was released back in the 70s. Guest in quotes as he was part of the band (for one album) and sang some of the tracks
If a band makes a new live version of their song a couple or three, four, decades later, is that really a cover? Is it a surprise if they changed the arrangements a bit? And how the musicians play it?
I always the liked the more recent live recordings more than the originals from the seventies with stale animations accompanying them. And I mean even the musical arrangements and performance. They just show that the old ones could be done better.
Songs have their own lives, some days angry, others full of pathos. The Dudes are the ones that get to decide. I think she means it when she sings it and that's the key.
Just saw this song performed at MGM Grand at Foxwoods. The show was the best SD show I have ever seen, and have been to many. Dirty work was performed and Carolyn sang the lead on this and it was amazing. A true 70's show, played many songs not often played including Daddy don't live in NYC and the entire AJA album. At this point David Palmer couldn't hold a candle to Carolyns version.
I agree with you whole heartedly..The women just do this song so well it would be hard to listen to the original..I would love to see SD in concert..they havent made it over here yet (Hawaii)
It's simply not satisfying because it doesn't meet my expectations based on the original. Just don't perform the song. This version absolutely conveys none of the feel or sentiment of the original. Thanks for posting it though. I wanted to see how they treat it now. Interesting, at least.
have been big fan of SD since 1979 but having seen them recently in Edinburgh, I must confess I have gone off them in a big way...familiarty breeds contempt I guess..the edinburgh show regards sound was very disappointing..
..Anyone see when they were out w/Michael McDonald & HE came out and sang lead? Awesome! The Silver Fox Rocks!(as long as he's not doin' later solo material.)
Fagan and Becker decided that since the singer on the original recording left the band before the second record was made, they would use this song as a showcase for their backup singers, since people don't identify with a Fagan or Becker vocal on this recording. This is the only tune in concert that Don or Walter don't sing.

Nothing personal....this sucks...If you like it that's fine, but it really has no drive, no soul and no originality to it's original creation...Fagen and Becker are getting lazy here.
If they are just going to do backup for karaoke singers then I'd say Steely Dan have finally jumped the shark altogether. Goddam ripoff for all the poor saps who buy tickets expecting them to actually sing their songs themselves. Yech.
Please forgive my sarcasm. I described it as a 'cover' because it sounds like an American Idol interpretation of a song I knew and loved 30+ years ago. (sigh). This version put distance between me and that song. On an artistic level its nice. On a sustantive level its vacant. (IMHO)
I agree simply the best live or on disc's I have all the originals on vinyl but nothing to play them on, Ipods and all that, this rendition is totally different to the original of course but none the worse for that, just great!!
Lots of negative comments on this video. I've seen the Dan do this live in this format numerous times and I think it's great. Definite New York jazz feel to it and the vocals blow the originals out of the water. Love the trumpet solo and chord changes from the original.
gonna listen to the album version now, and lol to the noodling comment about Becker. was thinking the same thing, then the chick singing this... ahh, no thanks
Simply Steely Dan. 'Nuff said.

The problem is many people can´t understand that when you play live, it´s absolutely natural to change things a bit or sometimes a lot.
As a fan, I like to listen to different arrangements made by the best American pop musicians you can find.
If you wanna listen to the original song, play the album.

The vocals just don't seem to mesh well. I like harmony just as much as the next fella but this sounds a little harsh.

Beautiful girls, but do they think, they are in a church?

Are the ladies singing, or on ESPN (all the hand waving)?

have been big fan of SD since 1979 but having seen them recently in Edinburgh, I must confess I have gone off them in a big way...familiarty breeds contempt I guess..the edinburgh show regards sound was very disappointing..

Fagan and Becker decided that since the singer on the original recording left the band before the second record was made, they would use this song as a showcase for their backup singers, since people don't identify with a Fagan or Becker vocal on this recording. This is the only tune in concert that Don or Walter don't sing.

Nothing personal....this sucks...If you like it that's fine, but it really has no drive, no soul and no originality to it's original creation...Fagen and Becker are getting lazy here.

the original song is steely dan!!! why the fuss??

If they are just going to do backup for karaoke singers then I'd say Steely Dan have finally jumped the shark altogether. Goddam ripoff for all the poor saps who buy tickets expecting them to actually sing their songs themselves. Yech.

Please forgive my sarcasm. I described it as a 'cover' because it sounds like an American Idol interpretation of a song I knew and loved 30+ years ago. (sigh). This version put distance between me and that song. On an artistic level its nice. On a sustantive level its vacant. (IMHO)

What a nice cover. Too bad it isn't Steely Dan. I just bought tickets to see them live in St. Augustine, FL. I hope this isn't what I just paid for.

I believe this song is a Steely Dan original.

What really made the original song so great was it's organ. In this version the organ takes a "back seat".

I agree simply the best live or on disc's I have all the originals on vinyl but nothing to play them on, Ipods and all that, this rendition is totally different to the original of course but none the worse for that, just great!!

They sound just as terrific live as they do in the studio.

Lots of negative comments on this video. I've seen the Dan do this live in this format numerous times and I think it's great. Definite New York jazz feel to it and the vocals blow the originals out of the water. Love the trumpet solo and chord changes from the original.

honestly, ive just recently really gotten into dan, and i love all their stuff, but don't like them live that much... some of it

just no.
gonna listen to the album version now, and lol to the noodling comment about Becker. was thinking the same thing, then the chick singing this... ahh, no thanks

It is a mite slow that's for sure. I've always enjoyed this version before but now it's morphing into a power ballad!

steely dan concert in sydney 2008 and this was an outstanding track -it should be released by the girls

Someone should tell Walter Becker that noodling around on his guitar is interesting only to him. Also lose weight.

PapaDeLame, someone should tell you that, despite your almost certain physical perfection, you're not fit to carry Walter Becker's guitar cases.
Say, I suppose I just did. Well, there's a job well done.

@PapaDeLaSon @PapaDeLaSon Right. And there are much better guitars on the market than those faceless Sadowskies.
