As a child I used to cry every time Oscar fell down those stairs. Thanks for making all those Christmases just that much more memorable you crazy bastard.
The beginning few minutes are my favourite, Feliz Navidad became my favourite Christmas song because of this show. I also wanted to ice skate because of the little girl.
So who's going to pay to repair that hole in the wall? That's a huge hole that's going to be pretty expensive to fix and I know Oscar certainly doesn't have the money!
I contacted PBS 2 years ago to see if they were going to show it. I was devastated that they weren't showing it. So I searched everywhere on the internet until I found it on amazon.com on DVD :) I get to watch it again now every Christmas. and I'm in my late 20s now :P
At 8:03, Oscar trips down the stairs. Classic element of physical comedy. Now comes the part where we throw our heads back and laugh. Ready? Ready! HAHAAHAHAHAHAAHA!!!!!
Could you put it to resealed it on DVDs, of 2012? There's kids who are born on the years like from the 1990s and the 2000s and 2010s, didn't watch it!
@GeorgiaKev Christmas tradition at my house. I'm 27 now and my mom still forces my sister and I to watch it every year... The challenge is to find new things to point out M.S.T. 3000 style every time. Classic
My sister gave me this for my 18th b-day! Ahh Memories! I have both the DVD and VHS, but the VHS version is so ANCIENT! I've had it forever, and I have no idea if it still works! stil love this though! :)
@chuckmckendry, I have to agree with you, because I have two niece's, and they're 14 months old, soon to to 15 months old this August 30th, and when they're older, i'm going to introduce this wonderful Christmas show to them, so that they'll enjoy it, as I and their mother had before them. this was The Thing, Before Elmo took over,
Personally, I think Elmo was more FORCED into the spotlight. Heavy competitors(ie. Barney) were coming around the time the people who made Sesame Street what it was were either retiring(Jon Stone) or passing away(Jim Henson), so the new generation felt they had no choice but to counter all that by pushing the little red guy who was just becoming popular at the time. Say whatever you want, but alot of it IS true.
@marpap14 I think they'd be even more shocked by Oscar's epic crash course, which by the way is THE best moment in the entire special and THE funniest moment in the show's entire history!
I still hope when my nieces are older, I'm going to get them into watching this classic sesame street christmas movie, this was The Thing, before Elmo took over.
I'm sorry for being a total buzzkill here, but was I the only kid watching this who only saw 'Bert', 'Ernie', 'The Count', and 'Cookie Monster' as a bunch of guys in costumes? I believe Big Bird and SORT OF Oscar, but those four? Nuh-uh.
I Remember Renting This, and It was unbelieveable. I Also Remember singing along to all the songs too. and that is still so sweet of that lil girl teaching Big Bird how to ice skate. I myself had never been ice skateing before, I have'nt even been to an ice skateing rink either. you might think i was a sheltered person when i was younger. I hope when my niece's are older, i'm going to get them to watch this classic sesame street show.
ok i was born in 1996 and somehow my parents still held onto this vhs that i just loved growing up to this movie every christmas! i just LOVE IT!! nostalgia :')
oh my god you made me think when i was around 2 years old and i love the part that ernie bert the count and the other guys jump over that big wood chunk. THANK YOU SO MUCH I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS VIDEO AND YOU FINALLY MADE IT THAAAAANK YOUUU!!!!!!!!!!!

I was obsessed with this as a child - and am thoroughly enjoying watching it again now! thanks so much for posting, I haven't been able to find the VHS we taped it on!
I always thought the fact they used Feliz Navidad at the beginning of this special was pretty cool. The US was finally starting to move a bit towards being tolerant, even joyful, of our differences, but it still was 1978. One of the many reasons I adore Jim Hinson and his awesome since of fairness and love.
i remember my mom showing me this when i was very little. I havent seen it since i was 3. I have not liked christmas as much as i did then untill i saw this video.
00:34 . . . how the frack do they do that. In the Muppet Movie which was made the same year, it had Kermit riding a bike. Pure Muppet magic courtesy of Jim Henson.
I always love how the humans on Sesame St would look to to the camera and give a wave as if some child was visiting Sesame St. This one is no exception. :) They little look Susan and Gordon give to the camera.
PBS used to show this every holiday season when they had their donation drive! I showed it to my kids (I have it on VHS) and all they could say was "where's Elmo???" Ugh, Sesame sure has gone downhill since the 70's ;(
See that's classic puppeteering (I think I spelt it worng) but who can create this character and have them do something most can't do. A-Plus in my books!

Ha I got hooked on felitz navidad from this special. has since been my fave all my life.... as for this one.... I have it on VHS and what a treat it is to see it on here.... thankyou for sharing I think my fave part in this episode is learning to skate and true blue miracles
My tape of this from when I was 5 is completely ruined at the spot where Oscar gets thrown through the wall from how many times we rewound it and laughed our asses off.
@lilblacksambo2 thats too bad.... ya mine isnt the greatest either.... still watch it several times each christmas too.... I admit that was funny.....
I used to have this on record..would listen to it all the time. My mom would sing that keep christmas with you song..on the day after christmas..it would always make me cry
