@zuditaka When we have sufficient surplus, we'll be pickling some eggs. At the moment, only 2 of the 3 hens are laying so the eggs we get tend to be used up quite quickly. We are hoping to get some more chickens shortly so hopefully will have a surplus of eggs soon.
Any thoughts about getting a cockrel? We find that ours - and the books say - that a cockrel helps keep the hens in order and also they can be very nice to look at. Our Polish Greenleg cockrel is now 5 years old and the longest survivor. Like the look of that Light Sussex - think we may get a couple next year.
@ivankinsman Our problem is that the chicken run is close to people's homes so there will likely be complaints about the noise cockrels make. A friend of ours however hatches chicks and keeps the cockrels til they are about 18 weeks when they start crowing. At that point they are slaughtered for meat. Were we to have the space away from people's homes, it's something we would consider.
@Greengate777 It was me! I asked for ideas for names from 800 Facebook friends and although there were plenty of suggestions, none quite gave me what I was after. So I came up with Attila myself.
@jonathanwallace Wow.... a politician with imagination and a sense of humor in 2011... who would've thought.... lol.... although.... (despite everything and hesitantly), Boris Johnson needs to be be mentioned in that category too.
Try pickling some boiled eggs in vinegar. It's lots of fun, and handy to have 'em ready-to-eat in a jar in the fridge! Cock-a-doodle-do! ♫ ♫ ♪

I'm jealous...but not as much as I might have been because my hens are nearing the horizon.
Best Wishes, Brendan.
