The epilogue isn't completely out of nowhere - if you read all of the Tommy/Rebecca journal entries, it's pretty clear (in retrospect at least) that SHODAN uploaded herself into Rebecca.

I don't really see why everyone thinks the ending is so dumb. Yes, SHODAN is supposed to be scary and intimidating. The fact that she is defeated means she is not, and the protagonist realizes this, calling her bluff and dealing the death blow. Her offer was a sham, a desperate attempt, a last resort. SHODAN would never consider herself partners with something as ugly as organic life.

The character's simple "Nah." takes away from her scariness because it's supposed to - she has no power left.

It doesn't fit into the rest of the game, and the dumbest thing is Rebbecca becoming SHODAN or something like that. Like SHODAN could do THAT kind of stuff! O_o

@CrizzyEyes While I somewhat agree with what you're saying, the reason most people think the ending is dumb is because it wasn't even in the original script. Ken Levine gave the group who had to do the ending cinematic a script he had written and when he got the ending you see in the game back, there was literally nothing from his script in the cinematic.

Since the cinematic had cost them so much money and time, they had to rewrite other portions of the game to fit the end.

I know there was more to it, but that's just putting in as few words as possible. In short, both AI's were really bluffing, and both have their qualities. SHODAN was more intimidating though because she was set in a horror game, and the circumstances were different etc.

i never could get the cutscenes to work, making this game run on vista was like trying to build a card castle in a plane during take off... so when i finally got it to work, I didn't dare touch the system file anymore...And since the credits are, at least in this game, a cutscene, as soon as i defeat Shodan, the game goes right back to the sart menu....
