Heehee, if that's a Saw Whet, then the chickens are in no danger. They outweigh him considerably. I have seen chickens chase, catch, and eat a field mouse, and also small snakes.
that is sooooo cool. where is this and does anyone know what kind of owl that is? I've never seen an owl in the wild like that.. the clearest sight I had of one was just a sillouhette. cool vid!
I hear that sometimes chickens will catch and eat mice by themselves if they can get them. It'd be funny if the owl and a chicken tried to grab the same mouse simultaneously.
Think you could post more vids of this beautiful bird?
ah yes the chickens will go after the mice if they see them. But the owl hunts them. During the day the chickens are out in the run and at night when napping the owl gets good hunting. I do bring my camera out to the coop now and then in hopes of getting more video. When I do I will post them. Do you have chickens?
I see. Maybe if you catch the owl eating a mouse while the chickens are around I'd like to see that.
Are you breeding chicks, though? I think the owl wouldn't mind sinking its claws into their yellow and fluffy selves every once in a while.
No, I don't have chickens, but I have read a bit more about raising them than most people do. I've seen chicks sitting on their parents' backs--if you saw the owl doing that it'd be awesome to film, or even if you fed it a caught mouse.
yes . you can walk in there and he is ok with it. The owl was in there again yesterday. We just do our thing and then leave and watch through the window.
That's a Saw whet owl. They are quite tame as you can see. What an awesome thing to have around! I might build my chicken coop by my kestrel box and hope they catch the mice like this guy does.
Mice hang out in the coop as there is food and water. This saw whet owl hangs there because there are mice. He comes and goes through the chicken door.
He looks so cuddly! ^^ But he'd probably get scared and fly away.

did it kill any chickens?

no this owl is a little bigger than a can of beer. The mice come around looking for chicken food and the owl waits for them.

Nice steady camera hand.
Do mice make an impact on your egg yield?
Does your visiting owl make an impact on the mouse population?
