To be honest, I'd imagine that any real CPC conversion would have been more of less horrendous. US Gold pretty much made a living off of ruining Capcom's arcade stuff (see Strider), and the C64 port of SF2 was no exception. Besides that. I'm pretty sure that Super Street Fighter was out long by the final projected release date for this.
Still, excellent video, and even if the game's not great, the trickery involved is pretty interesting to see.
you seem to have the only cpc sf2 review on youtube, the fact is people were so crazy about SF2 then, that if they had released even this version it would have sold tons. I think its sad that the multiface2 and the digiblaster were such hidden gems that improved the CPC by miles, I dont think Alan SaltyBalls cared anything about the CPC, imagine hardware upgrades to the ram and cpu. it would have put the cpc longer in the running.
The Amstrad scene will never die as long as there are fools like you and me making videos about it on YouTube.
No music in the fights? I would have liked to hear Ken's theme in all its Amstrad quality! And no special moves? It isn't Street Fighter without the Dragon Punch.
Chun Li's stage looks crap compared to the SNES version :P
Hey does anybody remember that dreadful Street Fighter conversion for the Amiga 500+ ?(not Street Fighter 2 - Personally when I was younger, I loved it) This has exactly the same move sets and similar animation. Well, the amstrad version has more frames of animation
@LarryBundyJr well, the truth is that by 1993 CPC machines were by any means as popular as they were by 1991. Thus a SFII release would most probably fail in terms of sales.Furthermore it was an expensive project and they did not want just to port it from Spectrum because this would be a very bad project example for US Gold because by these days (1993) Amiga and 16bit consoles were dominating the market and game publishers wanted to give the best they could give so they move on to 16 bit market.
@LarryBundyJr Finally, the truth is that US Gold never really started to working on a unique CPC version of the game. They wanted to use most of the code used on the Spectrum version but as I told u this would have been a really bad move for the company. So the project was abandoned but AA kept it alive by articles about it. If it would have been released it would most probably look like the C64 version.
LOL @ rating the Spectrum version of SF2 above the C64 version....the Spectrum version was literally unplayable, it was like watching a monochrome slideshow, at least the c64 version more or less worked....
Yeah the PLUS may be lighter, as the real CPC colours cannot be really produced by the PLUS and the normal emulation is not good (too dark) so Hermol probably choose the colours.
Too bad the game's engine wasn't that good originaly, yet the idea behind this project was good.
@macdeath69 Thanks dude! But doesn't the Plus use the same palette as the normal CPC just with an 'added range'? Hence why the ACID chip locks out these extra colours and normal CPC games look exactly the same (to my eyes) on a Plus machine?
@macdeath69 Really? Interesting ... is there an article about this on the cpcwiki somewhere? Honestly, I have CPC and Plus machines sat next to each other here and I've not noticed any difference ... maybe my eyes aren't as good as they used to be! lol
@realTFM Cool, yes I read that someone had eventually reversed engineered the ACID chip ... so it's just 17 bytes of code you fling at the CRTC? Ha! Nice!! Stupid why Amstrad put this protection on in the first place.
Should be on the CPC+...

@LarryBundyJr actually, it is a modification of SFI made by an Amstrad user. Still, there is no SFII for the CPC....
Misel982001 1 year ago
@Misel982001 I wonder why US Gold never completed it? If they managed a Spectrum one, surely a CPC one wasn't too hard to port?

@Xyphoe
Not really.
the 27 colours are emulated from the 4096 colours...
And those colours are not generated with same logic.
CPC : ternary digits (0,1,2...so 3 values) for RGB
PLUS : 4 bits (0-15...so 16 values) per RGB

@Xyphoe : You have to send a 17 bytes code to the CRTC of the Plus. This unlocks all Plus features.
