No matter how many times I raced at Mosport I never lost my fear of that track. There's no other track that has such fast swooping corners. Took balls to drive fast there.
Mosport must be the most awesome track in the world. There remain very few high speed, flowing tracks left in the world thanks to modifications in the interests of safety. Thankfully Mosports' layout is the same today as it was in '84. Watching the ALMS at Mosport, in my opinion, is the motorsport highlight of the year.
@NicholasBird Actually the track is almost completely different now, thanks to one JJ Lehto. There are now huge runoffs on 1, 3, and especially 5, which can now be taken as a sweeping hairpin rather than the double apex is was back in the day. The hump on the Andretti straight has been flattened 'in the interest of safety'. Not to say it still isn't a challenging track, but it has been sanitized significantly since Panoz bought it.
@blubuddha13 Thank-you for your informed comment. When you compare the changes you've mentioned to the way in which some European tracks have been emasculated 'in the interests of safety', they've done a really good job at Mosport to retain its challenge.
I think this is a better circuit than Montreal a good combination of sweeping turns, straights and slow corners. F1 should come back here for the Canadian GP because I reckon today's drivers would find it challenging. Regarding the onboard lap this is Vern Schuppan driving, not Derek Bell but he's still pushing the car like Bell would've done and the second corner is where Manfred Winkelhock had his fatal accident :(
I've got the DVD version of In Car 956 and the 1st 7 circuits are with Derek Bell and this onboard lap of Mosport was a bonus feature and it says on the back of the case that it's Vern Schuppan driving.
Yup, I have the VHS version and it's "In Car 956". During the season Porsche ran a T car in practice sessions and this was the car often used for filming. I miss Group C days, proper racing with amazing cars and loved being there back in the day.
This was the 'camera' car co-driven by Vern Schuppan and Nick Mason. Yes, that Nick Mason, I actually said hello to him, I doubt he remembers me though... I thought this was 1985, I've a photo of the car that clearly shows the car with a nose-mount for the camera. Times were different then, I showed up on Thursday and I just walked in. Full access to the pits and no one stopped me once.
Is anyone else really disappointed that they did not include Mosport in any of the big racing sims that are out/coming out! I mean Forza 2 has some absolutely pitiful tracks (along with some good ones) but no mosport... That is what they need to toss in to make the game complete and what really burns me up is that when you go onto their request forums more people are asking for chrome rims and a drag strip then one of the greatest race tracks ever mand.
Yeah man, most of the people on forza are idiots. Also think that it takes the same amount of skill to use ABS and TC...when really it isn't very difficult to go without both of them.
Mosport is brilliant, simply because instead of putting craooy chicanes in to make it safer, theyve moved the barriers back instead, so it keeps its flowing character :)
veyron is all speed it weighs as much as my house. tell me once when you heard about its brakes, cornering etc. anyone can fit w16 x4 turbos and go that fast.
You're suggesting that Jacky Ickx was out of control? Stefan Bellof may have crashed on occasion, but he was damn fast, won a lot of races... and Jacky Ickx was one of the most successful endurance racers of all time.
I agree, smooth is fast... but slow is ALWAYS slow.
I agree. Bell and Ickx won a lot of races - both together and seperately. This strikes me as either laps for the film or 'learning laps' for the driver......nice to see cars with manual gearshifts too!
He's got a HUGE camera in the car... making the car quite top heavy. I'd say he's concerned with not killing himself on camera. Look at the size of it in the nurburing clip. Big tape to tape camera. I'm sure it upset the balance a lot.
Im sorry but thats just not the case. IMSA cars haul no doubt, but very few road race designed race cars accelerate faster then current Formula 1 cars. And as far as top end goes thats just a matter of gearing. I doubt very much there is anything that can lap a road course quicker then an F1 car.
from i have seen on several documentaries about these cars on tv etc, i believe back in the 80's and possibly now they're still faster that formula one cars on the faster circuits, this is partially due to that they are not open wheeled cars and therefore produce alot less drag.
The only time Group C cars were faster than F1 was in 1994 when they used 3-Litre F1-style engines, and still used full ground-effects tunnels. They were two seconds faster at Monza.
That was awesome, I may have been there with my brother and father we have a picture of the two of us infront of the Skoal Bandit front-end off of a 956

Well said. It truly is a mind blowing track with ridiculously fast turns.

It's from a Derek Bell vhs video where he shows onboard laps of several of the world's cicuits. What makes you think its Vern Schuppan?

i wish jacky ickx or stefan bellof did the driving for in-car 956... bell (or in this case schuppan) never really seems to be pushing the car.
heelandtoe33 4 years ago
If 'pushing the car' equates to being out of control, then no, great drivers don't drive like that. Smooth is the key.........:-)

a buggati veyron could beat this car
Nataku147 4 years ago
are you stupid? or pretending you are one? Veyron wont do shit to this car or even a street high end supercar.
Just because it was claimed to have "fastest" top end speed doesn't make it a fast track car.

@akulax1 too much gt5 for u the veyron is the fastest car in the world and it takes turns faster than any f1 car..newb.

That does not seem to be true. F1: Nigel Mansell - 1:22.221, WSC: Peugeot 905 - 1:26.019. Both from poles and from 1992 obviously.
deggis4 3 years ago
Good research! I stand corrected. Upon looking it over, it seems like they would have been in the F1 grid, but not on pole.
