    As for your second question, it's not easy to make or edit any kind of game (depending on your project scope, of course), and Kingdom Hearts is no exception; heck, I'd say KH is an especially-good example of a challenging game to make. I think it's a very fun thing to do, though!

    The syntax is completely identical to C/C++, since Allegro is a library written in C.

    Unless you're referring to a ROM of the actual game, in which case that's illegal territory, and I'm not gonna help you there.

  • You should try out SDL, or even better, SFML, and try recreating this in those. They both are (supposedly) cross-platform. I like SFML over SDL, but there are more tutorials for SDL than SFML. :-/

  • @Techn0Junki3 Hmm, are those C++ libraries, or are they different languages entirely? (The "L" parts of their names kind of hint that the latter to me.) Sounds like a good deal if they are the former, especially since I don't think Allegro is compatible with Macs, sadly.

    SDL = Simple DirectMedia Layer

    SFML = Simple Fast Multimedia Layer

    SFML has better control over audio, image manipulation, and possibly better networking! :)

  • @Kanzuko It took me a few weeks at least, but that was mostly because I procrastinated a lot. It was after E3 2009 of last year when the drive to work on the engine more really hit me.

    I haven't really had a lot of inspiration and, as of late, time to work on it, unfortunately. Other than adding more enemies and programming AI (for the former, I'd probably need to get my hands on more spritesheets, and for the sake of avoiding Birth by Sleep spoilers, I'm probably not going to go do that anytime soon), I'm not sure how else to improve it.

    Of course, suggestions are highly appreciated!

  • @Mikencz It depends on what you want and what programs or libraries require. Personally, I prefer C++ over C# because, aside from it being my first programming language, C++ is much less redundant with the object-oriented aspect.

    However, there's no jack-of-all-trades language, so I'd say get a feel for them all to see which one best fits your needs.

    When you get a good grasp of the language, I highly recommend looking into Allegro. It's a neat library.

  • @Nocturnopoder06 Ah, Unity, eh? Unfortunately, I doubt the Allegro library's compatible with it. However, if you're going to work on an Allegro application, then I'd experiment with the library first and understand bitmaps and drawing routines and the like first, if you don't know how to use it already.

    If you're up to it, come back to me when you do, and I'll try to fill you in as best as I can about how to implement the HUD's functions.

  • Where did you get the sound effects for this?

  • In the worst way you can imagine. XD

    I pretty much had to pop in my copy of Kingdom Hearts II, go to Betwixt and Between because of its lack of music, and record the sound from my television with a microphone (I had no capture card on me at the time, so the quality suffered). Then I just cleaned up and altered the sound clips with Audacity.

  • pretty good for recorded sounds! I would have thought you ripped them straight off the game with some program.

  • If a free program like that existed without requiring capturing video, that would've been nice. XD

  • oh really, you recorded the sounds? WOW! I hope you don't mind if I use a few of them in my Kingdom Hearts Coded Fandub. I'm just saying they're ripped from the game (which is sort of true....recorded? Ripped? same difference cause they're still from the game.)

  • No problem, I've been trying to learn C++, but its hard to do it through a book. I learned HTML through a lot of trial and error, I'm guessing I'll have to do the same with C++.

  • I can't even fathom how one can learn C++ through trial and error alone. XD I'd strongly suggest sticking with the book or at least a resource of some kind.

    If you could, you could try keeping your eye out for a book that, I think, is called Starting out with C++: Early Objects, if you don't have it already. It's an excellent book to launch out of the starting blocks, and it could actually give you a huge edge in C++ competitions like it did for me. ;)

  • Trial and Error won't get you anywhere quickly.

    I'd recommend looking at source code and breaking things down. Once you understand how someone else's programs work, you'll eventually be able to create methods of your own.
