Why would you not want your politicians to change their position with the availability of new information. Its like making financial investments, while not studying the stock market.
the "change" the democrats want would entail concentration camps, a communist dictatorship, a cult of personality around the liberal god obama. the reason the dems keep flip flopping is because they have no faith in god (obama is a muslim and the rest of the dems are atheists just like the nazis were) and god shows that faith is the most important thing in life, thats why the dems are so terribly immoral, weak, and nazi. because they hate god
@tehant1liberal - you could be the most ridiculous fool on youtube. nazi's were christians, not atheists. they were card carrying white supremacist racists just like the kkk was running around in their hoods and burning crosses.
the nazi's were more in line with your conservative ideology.
your comment has not one shred of truth and you should be embarrassed for being that ignorant.
That's crap. Louisiana is broke & is a red. state. Mississippi is broke & is a red state. Plenty of red states are having financial troubles. I dare say MOST states are having to make major cut backs right now.
And who did you bail out? Your taxes went up? How much extra money did YOU put up per dollar earned in your next tax return?
The dems are going to let the Bush tax cuts expire and have been raising them in every venue possible. LA was controlled by the dem party and Jindal will tunr it around. It's not crap at all--consider what the state legislators have been doing in CA, NY, and MA--the Governorships in VA and NJ have been changed out largely because of the goofy taxes. People are having a hard time paying it all.
Not Louisiana & not Mississippi. Again I say, both red states. And both historically red states since the blue-red designations. I have yet to see any research published that blue states are suffering more so from the recession. In fact, I have seen data that says red states get more money per capita from the Federal Government than blue states, on average.
In fact I'm looking at the Bureau of Labor & Statistics data right now & North Carolina & South Carolina's unemployment rates are as high as those of California & Oregon.
For every blue state with a high unemployment rate, there is a red state with a high unemployment rate. So as I said before, it looks like most states are having trouble. Your liberal-state versus conservative-state correlation with unemployment & Federal assistance is crap.
Not being able to change your opinion when facts and the situation around you changes is really retarded. - I wish voters would smarten up, but that's never gonna happen, so we're screwed.
independents and moderates are two diff. entities. take the two (i)'s in the senate, lieberman and sanders. complete opposites.
it's lieberman, conservatives and conservadems that are holding up health insurance reforms that would do a world of good in several ways, but it's the handful of "moderate" dems breaking with their own party to kill desperately needed legislation.
maybe "moderate" wasn't the right word. it's "social conservatives" that i absolutely loathe. in any form.
lieberman isnt a conservative. He was a democrat. He just became an independent because he lost the democratic primary in connecticut.
Lieberman is one of those guys that will stab anyone in the back if it helps him. Whether its his party, or his constituents. I don't think the guy truly has any sort of personal political stance on anything, he is only motivated by personal gain.
I think the focus should be on doing what is practical, and if changing your mind better fits the situation, then it should be done. If government isn't flexible enough to deal with issues because our public is too stupid to see beyond "flip-flopping" then our empire will fall.
i don't like this vid. its not all about getting votes. i want democrats to think with their heads, not with polling data. even if it does cost some political capital, our country is in too fragile a state for our politicians to make decisions based on this line of logic.
As for Kerry's infamous statement, that was never a flipflop. It was a misstatement and a soundbyte. There were two versions of the bill and he preferred the one to the other.
Redneck is a disparaging[1] term that refers to a person who is stereotypically Caucasian and of lower social-economic status in the United States and Canada, particularly referring to those living in rural areas. Originally limited to the Southern United States, and then to Appalachia, the term has become widely used throughout North America
More open to voting for a candidate that switches to pro-life ideas, as opposed to punishing them for changing their position, even if to their preferred view.
What he's saying is that, as a rule, voters punish 'flip floppers', but pro-lifers have few qualms about embracing former pro-choicers, which means they actually reward 'flip floppers'.
Not to sound like a mindless drone, but Ron Paul has had the same positions for 30 years.
A vast majority of republicans do not stay the course. The don't. They give the illusion that they do. This is coming from a republican. Republicans for as long as i remember have been for budget cuts, and then Mr Bush comes along and spends more money than every other president combined. The only spotlight politician i have seen that truly "stays the course" is Ron Paul.
i say we abolish a central government.. then we go back to tribes... but not before we destroy all technology.. humans are dangerous not the world.. a little power is given to a human and he grows a god complex this has been proven throughout history.. the sooner we realize this the better off well be.. a true democracy would consist of a small community voting over cb radios daily..
lol, I was one once in collge coming from a conservative upbringing discovered it an you are correct, funny thing if the chips are down liber scream for help the fastest, they live to believe the myth of self sufficiency and do nothing with it, i raise my own food, slaughter m own animals,
You are silly silly "fellow". I don't give shit. Did you know Turkey is a MUSLIM COUNTRY. Did you know it comes from the Ottoman empire that MASSACRED 2 MILLION Armenian Christians? WHAT IS YOUR POINT. Get a clue and a sense of humor. He was a MUSLIM. Turkey by the way lets men go who "Honor Murder" their PREGNANT wives. It's unsafe for foreigners, ESPECIALLY JEWS to go there. Churches, the few, are defaced or fire bombed, and their parliament debates making Hijab mandatory.
Its unsafe for people everywhere don't let you false sense of security cloud the fact that the WORLD as a whole is a dangerous place. America included.
Of course the truth is that a huge percentage of the voters already have their minds made up long before they enter the polling booth.
This study must only cover swing voters, otherwise I am not sure if those being polled are just giving theoretical answers or if they are stating what they actually do.
Well, if someone has a voting record, but runs for a higher office on a different platform, it's kind of hard to believe them.
As far as Kerry's flip-flopping goes, that was highly exaggerated by the right. He voted against that funding bill because it wasn't paid for, but the bill he had been told was going to be on the Senate floor included a method of paying for the funding.
That's what he meant by "voting for it before voting against it."
I disagree with Cenk's analysis of Obama here as being the "flip-flop" candidate or politician. I think he's been remarkably consistent, especially on issues like Afghanistan and health care. I think Cenk is confusing "compromise" with total position change. I think that the American people will be able to see the difference between Obama accepting some compromise in health care reform and a complete change in his position. Obama polls extremely well as a "strong, decisive leader".
In my opinion, it is the independent thinker or the person that tries to do what's right and not what's popular. If trying to do what's right means changing one's stance on an issue, so be it. Frankly, I don't know if the conservatives are smart enough to think independently.
That goes for a lot of voters, also. A lot of them (not all of them) go along with something just because somebody says it's so. That is the main reason, I think, that the wrong people are always being elected.
Sorry Cenk, that's fucking stupid. The results of this poll shouldn't be propped up but torn down, as Exhibit A to how fucking stupid the average US voter is.
It is stupid to stick to a position because you're afraid of voters reaction. Things change. Situations change. So must your approach if it calls for it.
I rather have a President that switches to an ideal I disagree with it their approach is better for the country. How can anyone disagree with that?
This sounds like Keith Olbermann level of whining about 30,000 more troops in Afghanistan, SHUT UP!
We can't leave now. We also don't give a shit if other Nations FAILED. How about we SUCCEED! If we can turn it around, have independent local NON TERRORIST TALIBAN governments that treat people fairly by the LAW..... it will be GOOD FOR AMERICA.... Other wise it is going to be the Birth place of 9/11 Part 2, the bigger "allah akbar die infidel".
Senator Lindsey Graham pushed for "Gramhamnesty" for illegals, and called those who opposed it bigots, some time afterwards he changed his rhetoric and started talking about protection the borders against illegals, yet he still won the election. So flip floppers do win sometimes.
You forget ONE BIG THING. Politics and Politician suck. Graham is in a Conservative district. Crazy stupid Michelle Bachmann, MN (R), won re-election!
THAT'S A PROBLEM. Congressman and Senators get re-elected over and over by inertia and Party brand loyalty. There are people that will NEVER vote for the other party. That has changed some what, but the extreme 20% Left & 20% right will always be in affect. If a district is full of 20%'ers, party partisanship rules.
What does the Secret Muslim Cernk Uygur have to say today....
0:07 to 0:30 is the most inarticulate huh, thing, huh, I have heard in, huh, awhile, huh. Ha ha.
This study is stupid.... MORALS and PRINCIPLES and VALUES should be constant......
When it comes to political platforms and policies, if you stick with it, and it is DUMB it will cost you. DEMS are anti War or NOT? IT SHOULD BE BASED ON FACTS. Facts Change.
WOW that is a super genius question! DO you have a google deficiency? Try, first to look up the word Fact. Pick a topic or subject.... Read (if you can) and research all the DATA (aka FACTS) .... then deliberate, analyze and think about the subject and come up with an opinion or position on that topic based on the information (aka FACTS). You know THINK.... never mind you would not understand......
"i didnt ask what facts are your moron i said what facts"
You are an eh-hole. What facts are those? I don't know, what color is brown? How long is the word long? Shut up idiot. Read more. You might want to mention a SUBJECT NEXT TIME? "What facts are those?" Ha ha. I told you what to do with the word FACT. I'll add stick it up your ass. Have a nice day. (It's call sarcasm moron)
Voters need to substitute the words "for the people by the people" instead of using the word government, becuase they use the word as a scare tactic. People need to vote based on truth and fact and not on less than true perception & emotion.
Good Job! Getting on MSNBC as a pundint, it was refreshing to see reason and logic in a discussion, instead of emotional rhetoric& twisted points of view that favor the oligarchy.
weren't the young turks a real movement in turkey or whatever country it was at the time. it was after world war one or something, they demanded the west out of their affairs, rightfully.
It may be a subtle point, but your statement is actually in agreement with what I'm saying. They think they know the truth and they stick to it, regardless. But an actual true dedication to the truth requires a constant willingness to re-examine your own beliefs and concepts. It requires that you be willing to let go of what you believe to be true when the evidence indicates that you are wrong.
Call me a paranoid conspiracy theorist if you will but I always thought the Republicans threw the election by putting up a zombie and a bimbo, they knew the economy was going to implode thanks to Bush and didn't want it to do so under a Republican president. That way if Obama turns the economy round and withdraws from Iraqi and Afganistan they can use it to beat him round the head with next time.
There was another TYT episode where the topic was about Obama's relation to the Fort Hood shooter to show how twisting the facts and truth does sway future voters. I've never ever seen republicans fight a single president so fierce and so bold over anything EVER.
its why no noe respects democrats they are spinless and duplicitous i usually agree with "liberals' but get so digusted with there cowardice and in competance
i have voted for republican like juliani and shwartzenegger simply to vote for someone with the balls to get something done democrats are pussies now and i hate that you need to bring back the FDR truman type democrat
oh, you mean like flip flopping to the religious right in 2008 when in 2000 he said they were dangerous or something? Thats just one one of many, but an important one.
Actually he's known very well for flip-flopping. In fact, I saw it first hand on TV. One night he spoke to an audience in West Virginia about how he's against cap and trade because it would effect them, then the next night he spoke to a crowd in another state saying he was for cap and trade and polluting corporations should be accountable.
McCain ran on cap and trade, now he's against it. McCain was also for cutting medicare, now he's against it. McCain use to be prochoice back in the early 90's, now he's against it. He's moved with the political tide just like every other one.
no it is not just a political choice cenk.. their policies have profound and real influences on people's living standard. i'm not sure why obama's motives are even discussed, the record is what counts. i don't care whether he's a good guy. if he can't do the job, get the hell off the stage.
The key is to get voters to vote AGAINST something, Repiglicans use wedge issues like abortion and Gay Marriage....just keep saying what Palin/McCain would be doing right now(3 more wars and creationism being taught in all schools), and the status quo dont look so bad....
The candidate with the fewest votes wins. Each voter still gets one vote, but the voter is essentially voting for the person they would least like to hold office.
look just because cenk first suppported afghanistan and then opposed it its not a flip flop he isnt a politician and if he was and for a while he was supporting then he voted against it then yes he would be a flip flop but he didnt he got new information and changed his mind he never said before he was going to support it no matter what or vote on it he said he wasnt sure and now he is sure he doesnt support it
But for the core political issues, it's not about that. There will be no new information to change people's minds on gay marriage, abortion or sex education.
I agree with the findings of this study because I can tell you now, I'm ditching the democrats and becoming independent after this health care b.s. And by the way Obama has not followed through w/ his campaign promises (and I know certain things take time, but I mean standing strong and firm and clear about the issues he ran on)
(contin) I would not vote for him again. It's impossible to have one definitive and absolute stance on the economy, for example, because there are so many variables and they are subject to change so to refuse to adapt to that change would just be retarded. But on core issues like health care, gay marriage/rights, and abortion- there is no room for flip-floppers. That's why I'm leaving the dems and going indie.
I am sorry but I don't recall Obama every saying that we should just leave Afganistan. In every instance I can recall where he mentioned it he said it was the war that we should be fighting, as opposed to Iraq. Why do so many people forget this and bash him for not pulling out of Afganistan asap?
Cenk what is this cod scientific analysis of an academic paper? So one guy says something, he's an academic, therefore it's true for all eternity in all situations... You are probably misrepresenting the findings anyway. Can you engage in a bit more of a nuanced approach instead of just hijacking this paper to support your views.
First of all, Obama has not flip-flopped on substanative issues. Your criticims on the detainee issue is baseless. Progressives have maligned him for not embracing their agenda enough.
The only thing progressives might validly criticize him for is not accomplishing the goals he set forth fast enough. Even that would be ignorant of the process of enacting change. He has an extremely broad agenda and he is pushing forward on a lot of fronts. Any other conclusion is politically motivated.
Seems flawed and wayyy off. People will vote for an incumbent in a district whether they agree with them or not because of the FPTP we have. If we used Proportional representation or Single Transferable Voting that phenomenon would decrease dramatically.
Its because the dems modus operandi is to give everyone what they want, or at least 'promise' to do so, and republicans tend to base their giving on principles.
if the politicians and issues are made up, leaving out the factors of current political climate and personality of the politician, then this study couldn't be farther away from the reality of what makes people vote a certain way.
nope, the more i think about it the less sense it makes. someone please explain this to me.
Dude...if we accept the need/ability to rethink whether or not WR X got both feet down, in-bounds, with possession, and maintained possession while going to the ground...I sure as hell think we should do it on matters of life and death
"get it right" is the important thing, no?
yes, people on the whole are morons, and would rather stick to/maintain and perpetuate the wrong thought/action...unless of course it means making the playoffs...that's America baby
Sarah Palin will receive more votes than any presidential candidate in HISTORY for Palin NEVER EVER flip flops on ANY ISSUE! Palin has SUPERIOR MORALS, PRINCIPLES and INTEGRITY than ALL politicians combined and she always sticks to them! She WILL be America's GREATEST POTUS of ALL TIMES and will BRING REAL CHANGE for she is GOD's CHOSEN ONE, GOD INCARNATE, the REAL MESSIAH and SAVIOR and the LIVING EMBODIMENT OF GOD HERSELF!
How does this apply to Sarah Palin? You could SAY that she flip flops, but in reality she just doesn't know what the hell she's talking about, so she never remembers what her position was last week. Same thing. Why does she have such rabid supporters?
The merits of this sociology 'study?'(seance, voodoo ritual, casting bones) are highly questionable, to say the least. Sociology is a psuedo-science that pursues a political agenda, not scientific research. Even the heads of sociology departments admit to this.
Maybe if he didn't have to fight the right wing lunacy every step of the way (or if they'd actually bring legitimate points) he would be able to keep his word. Screw bipartisanship, there's one political party and one pack of backassward mad hatters.
bullshit study. Just because SAY they would do something based on some HYPOTHETICAL does not mean they will. Mind boggling that most academics have not figured this out.
It's idiotic that standing your ground nets your more votes. It should depend on the situation. If someone is just flopping around in order to try and please everyone, then by all means don't vote for that person. But in the case of Kerry, he clearly realized that he made a bad decision in supporting the war and he changed his mind. It says a lot more about a persons character when they can admit that they were wrong than when someone refuses to admit that they made a wrong decision.
"It says a lot more about a persons character when they can admit that they were wrong than when someone refuses to admit that they made a wrong decision."
True, but politicians aren't usually the people I trust to truly have a change of heart. It seems as if every politician has a sudden epiphany when it's time for election or when money is involved.
You fuckers act like dumbass creationists. It takes time to change. It takes more than a year for politics and the mainstream to evolve. Especially when meteorites like the RNC are trying to kill off other species so that cockroaches and turdblossoms can rule the world.
cenk's idea of what a democrat and a republican is....is fundamentally flawed....while there are virtually no "liberal" republicans...there are about 1/2 to 2/3 of the democrats who are conservative or moderate...we as libs may not like that reality....but it is true...that's why it's so hard for obama to deliver on what we / he wants...look at dumbass democrats like stupak , joe liebermann, max baucus etc....do you think these fools are gunna fight for the change obama seeks....???....yea right
Conservative democrats are called blue dog democracts, which Cenk is perfectly aware of. Moderates, are moderate. They will support the majority, which is liberal.

Of course the truth is that a huge percentage of the voters already have their minds made up long before they enter the polling booth.
This study must only cover swing voters, otherwise I am not sure if those being polled are just giving theoretical answers or if they are stating what they actually do.
Mxyzptlk562 2 years ago
Well, if someone has a voting record, but runs for a higher office on a different platform, it's kind of hard to believe them.
As far as Kerry's flip-flopping goes, that was highly exaggerated by the right. He voted against that funding bill because it wasn't paid for, but the bill he had been told was going to be on the Senate floor included a method of paying for the funding.
That's what he meant by "voting for it before voting against it."
MntlWard 2 years ago
I disagree with Cenk's analysis of Obama here as being the "flip-flop" candidate or politician. I think he's been remarkably consistent, especially on issues like Afghanistan and health care. I think Cenk is confusing "compromise" with total position change. I think that the American people will be able to see the difference between Obama accepting some compromise in health care reform and a complete change in his position. Obama polls extremely well as a "strong, decisive leader".
MrDustandechoes 2 years ago
In my opinion, it is the independent thinker or the person that tries to do what's right and not what's popular. If trying to do what's right means changing one's stance on an issue, so be it. Frankly, I don't know if the conservatives are smart enough to think independently.
That goes for a lot of voters, also. A lot of them (not all of them) go along with something just because somebody says it's so. That is the main reason, I think, that the wrong people are always being elected.

Voters are mostly morons.
This reminds me of the study where they attributed Obama's policies to McCain/Queen Moron, and some of the McCain policies to Obama.
Guess what? Obama voters supported the McCain ideas if they were attributed to Obama, and opposed Obama policies credited to McCain.
"Informed electorate" indeed.

This whole idea is bullshit. There are way too many variables to reach any conclusion and call it scientific.

Switching exudes weakness?
Sorry Cenk, that's fucking stupid. The results of this poll shouldn't be propped up but torn down, as Exhibit A to how fucking stupid the average US voter is.
It is stupid to stick to a position because you're afraid of voters reaction. Things change. Situations change. So must your approach if it calls for it.
I rather have a President that switches to an ideal I disagree with it their approach is better for the country. How can anyone disagree with that?
deeluve22 2 years ago
You are probably right, but to me it seems to be true that many voters rate single-mindedness over ability to react to events, unfortunately.
bimblinghill 2 years ago
I dont know, when its "Candidate A changes positions" its easy to say that would make a big difference.
But when its the position on something i dont care about and the other candidate is a 'baby killer', a lot of people will ignore the flip flop.
Then theres the fact a lot of voters dont pay that much attention to actual policy anyway

Here is a novel solution. Negative voting.
The candidate with the fewest votes wins. Each voter still gets one vote, but the voter is essentially voting for the person they would least like to hold office.
Richardgwm 2 years ago 3
This study is seriously flawed, but it is nice someone is trying to do research into these issues.
One major flaw is that what people say they will do, is not correlated with what they actually do.
Richardgwm 2 years ago
look just because cenk first suppported afghanistan and then opposed it its not a flip flop he isnt a politician and if he was and for a while he was supporting then he voted against it then yes he would be a flip flop but he didnt he got new information and changed his mind he never said before he was going to support it no matter what or vote on it he said he wasnt sure and now he is sure he doesnt support it
avi919191 2 years ago 2
Sometimes flip-flopping is just knowing new information. Changing one's mind when new information becomes available is not a bad idea.
eirefrance 2 years ago 5
yep, that's what i was thinking too
EedDeryi 2 years ago
But for the core political issues, it's not about that. There will be no new information to change people's minds on gay marriage, abortion or sex education.
I agree with the findings of this study because I can tell you now, I'm ditching the democrats and becoming independent after this health care b.s. And by the way Obama has not followed through w/ his campaign promises (and I know certain things take time, but I mean standing strong and firm and clear about the issues he ran on)
july7nyc 2 years ago
(contin) I would not vote for him again. It's impossible to have one definitive and absolute stance on the economy, for example, because there are so many variables and they are subject to change so to refuse to adapt to that change would just be retarded. But on core issues like health care, gay marriage/rights, and abortion- there is no room for flip-floppers. That's why I'm leaving the dems and going indie.
july7nyc 2 years ago
I am sorry but I don't recall Obama every saying that we should just leave Afganistan. In every instance I can recall where he mentioned it he said it was the war that we should be fighting, as opposed to Iraq. Why do so many people forget this and bash him for not pulling out of Afganistan asap?
HaloGunner117 2 years ago
Cenk what is this cod scientific analysis of an academic paper? So one guy says something, he's an academic, therefore it's true for all eternity in all situations... You are probably misrepresenting the findings anyway. Can you engage in a bit more of a nuanced approach instead of just hijacking this paper to support your views.
247politics 2 years ago
First of all, Obama has not flip-flopped on substanative issues. Your criticims on the detainee issue is baseless. Progressives have maligned him for not embracing their agenda enough.
The only thing progressives might validly criticize him for is not accomplishing the goals he set forth fast enough. Even that would be ignorant of the process of enacting change. He has an extremely broad agenda and he is pushing forward on a lot of fronts. Any other conclusion is politically motivated.

as he already says we start bringing the troops home in a couple of years. WTF?
It's no question why his approval ratings continue to tank.

Seems flawed and wayyy off. People will vote for an incumbent in a district whether they agree with them or not because of the FPTP we have. If we used Proportional representation or Single Transferable Voting that phenomenon would decrease dramatically.
