I think youre right. His tenor range lost its power in the very early 80's by this time the drugs and over stretching of his vocal chords had taken their toll

he lost his voice during the live in australia tour didn't he? he had his surgery in jan 87 i think so this would could of been late 86. you can definetly tell it got deeper due to his drug use

It wasn't the drugs that screwed his voice up; it was the complete abuse of his voice when he was ON drugs that gave him the nodules.

Usually a singer uses specific techniques which enables him to sing for a long time. Without techniques you get signals from your body to stop singing or make slow in order to avoid destroying your voice. But when you're high, your so pushed that you don't notice any Stop Signs
