You are always uploading such the grate videos !!

  • Hey man great playing and swinging!Do u do this on a MIDI piano like the C3?How do you put the other keyboard showing the MIDI notes that you´re playin´?

Keep in touch, hope to hear from you, abstract blues-man...!

  • @MrJonkeys This was played on a Roland FP-4 with MIDI data displayed by VanBasco Midi player.

  • ...That is REALLY nicely done!...

    Sincerely,

    Bill McBirnie

  • fine stuff!

  • Mind blowing-ly awesome. Way to make music out of nothing. 6 stars (if i could).

  • great stuff man! can i ask how you get the computer keyboard display to sync with your playing on the real keyboard??

    Where dya get it from??

hope you dont mind me asking!

    cheers

    keep up the great work!

  • Great soloing and great suggestion to try the Abersold "Free Play" pla-along.

  • I like that Roger......groovin'

  • Thanks, Dave.

  • Roger-one year later I still like it. In fact it sounds even better to me.

  • @ddferris Thanks Dave, I really appreciate your comment!

  • seems like your Bflat is crushed, lol

  • It actually is pretty worn-out ;-)

  • Swingin'..yeah!

  • Who The Hell are you and why you are not in a DownBeat Magazine Cover??? That was absolutely awesome! I heard Monk all the way, but also Jarret and even Tyner. And FYI am 45 and been playing Jazz for 20+ years so I can tell when I hear good sh.... er..stuff. Your use of the LH Alt chords is mind blowing. Thanks man. I'm planning to totally transcribe your solo for myself and my students if you don't mind.

  • Thanks for the nice comment. Yeah, those players are a few of my influences.

  • Schweet!

  • That was awesome! I've been listening a lot lately to the second miles quintet, and what you're doing here is in the same vein. Great!

  • Yes, that quintet is one of my favorites.

  • hi! you're very good!! i like the way you play .. can you do this always on you succeeding posts i like the piano on top of you playing so i can copy some of your runs. im a beginner piano player and i love jazz improvisation.

  • Interesting, I'd like to know the process you used for getting that virtual keyboard above the real keyboard? Never seen anything like that. I suspect it's a lot of work?

  • Its a free program called vanbasco and it is WICKED. I've learned loads of Emerson, Tarkus, Howdown on it. You can slow down the midi tracks and isolate each instrument. It really is good! Great if you can't read music!

  • Yea, I started using it a while back. At first, the virtual piano wasn't very big for my monitor size, but they have a "skin" that increases the size of the piano.

  • You give the solo such a good shape which is pretty hard to do with a time no changes, and with a great swing as well. Nice

  • wow i'm amazed at how steinwayish the fp4 sounds! is that the 'grand piano 1' sound out of the box? or did you adjust the settings (extra reverb etc)? also would you mind sharing what speaker system you have set up?

great playing too by the way!

  • Thanks. Good ears. The settings were given to me by another FP-4 player who tried to match the sound of his Steinway - I changed them slightly to my own taste. They are as follows:

    Multieffects - 59

    Reverb - 2

    Sound Control - 3

    Sensitivity - High

Recorded direct into PC through M-Audio 1010LT soundcard.

  • Do you know, if it is possible to use this settings in the FP-7 too? Or has the FP4 a different grand piano sound?

  • My understanding is that the sounds are exactly the same. I believe the FP-7 might have a few more control settings available. The Roland website should list all the specs.

  • The thing that is so masterful about this is that it gives the impression that you and the bass player are actually playing conventional chord changes, even though you are not. The phrasing and hard swing makes it for me.

  • The run around 1:00 + has always been a favorite of mine to hear, now I can finally see what it really looks like :).

Thanks for posting. Very loose piece indeed.

  • Hi Roger,

thanks for the explanation you have written, without would be perk hard to understand. And if you allow me, I want to to add for Listeners who may not understand this style: "Free Jazz" "pure improvise" does not mean playing notes at random as mental crippled. Yes,they are no chages, but because you must improvise them, the skill and beauty of this style is not only what you improvise but how you improvise. Fantastic Work!

  • Thanks Alfonso. Yes, for me the freedom that is allowed within the context of this type of playing must be used in a manner which makes a certain amount of musical "sense". I am hoping to take the listener on a musical journey with me on a route that neither of us have traveled and to a destination unknown, while at the same time, providing an interesting soundscape.
