  • Stephen Stills... all American Rock at its best. He makes that guitar sing its own language.

  • Worst cover of a song ive ever heard.... Lol he was like mumbling words

  • @EmptyPlate48

You kidding or what? Stills wrote this song and can do whatever he wants with it. Called artistic license and by the way how many songs do you have on top 100 lists? Last I checked SS has 5 including this one.

  • @EmptyPlate48

It's not a cover. Stills WROTE this song.

  • @EmptyPlate48 Stephen Stills actually wrote the song. After all these years, he can sing it the way he wants. he rocks!

  • This guy jammed with Hendrix.... you can't get more legit than that! Oh wait, Buffalo Springfield & CS&N.... Laurel Canyon forever!

  • simple........ one word............ TALENT!!

  • Save for the odd Vivaldi, this must be the best piece of music I have ever heard!

  • Leftover musical crap.

  • David Crosby is a great artist who walks in the sand of Hanalei Bay Hawaii while holding hands with Jan. We love and respect your artistry David Crosby your generous lyrics about life and delightful music soothes mankind mahalo. We walked in the sand with David Crosby and Jan. We all hugged we talked it was grand. Today was a special Sunday June, 26, 2011 Woodstock reunion. We were close to the stage in Woodstock 1969 saw each band perform. We are in the Woodstock 1969 Movie thank you.

  • ...and Graham Nash and David Crosby nicked off backstage to smoke a fat one..

  • ageless

  • Stop-Hey-What's that Sound-------Steven Stills baby!!!!!

  • Awesome track, killer version live. Love to see him in concert

  • Fine sweet wine, husky rough and sexy. Seasoned. That was perfection Ya'll. I want to do something with you but I won't stop(tee hee) Every phase of his life on video shows another layer, This is what an angel sounds like when he is forced to mature.

  • I wouldnt blow him...but I sure watch him play...he is a great picker...so underated

  • i've always had a ceush on him!

  • Kind of amazing how many comments here don't realize HE WROTE THIS SONG. Jeez.

  • I saw him in concert so many times.....He always delivered

  • the thing is this was the first performance of this song I ever heared... and first concert of CS&N I've ever seen

  • all my friends listen to trash. stuff like miley cirus, avenged sevenfold, lady gaga, chris brown. i wish they wouldnt conform to the ''mainstream''. radios play what they THINK you should be listening to. but its just not right. more poeple need ot hear this. great song and performance. this is music.

  • I hear the notes, I am young again. How sweet it is.

  • @deadhead1065 is this available on CD this concert would be a welcome addition to the collection even if only for this tune.

  • 3 People don't like this?

Really, one man and a Guitar's not enough? >_>

  • Outfuckingstanding!!!

  • time machine 2010 AMDG

  • Killer guitar. The man owns the song.

  • Stephen Stills is one of the most underrated guitar-gods out there. What he does with this song, on his own, without the band, just his voice and his rockin' Telecaster is stellar! Reminds me of the lyrics of Johnny B. Goode - "strumming to the rhythm that the driver made" - his groove is tremendous. His "reinvention" of his own classic song makes this version even better. Simply put, he's made this version another classic, along with the ones on 4 Way Street and the original. WOW!

  • @intrepidsinger I agree. He followd Jimi Hendrix around for years lesaring to solo and improve. They jammed together often and were good friends. Stills is a guitar god and a treasure to music.

  • @me2gap Thanks! You are right, he's always been an incredible student of the guitar and music in general. I've had the honor to meet and even play with some of the great musicians from the 60's & 70's era. However, one of the few on my "bucket list" I've yet to meet is Mr. Stills. His music has rocked my world since I first heard Buffalo Springfield play this song. Someday perhaps....

  • He's still cuttin' it.

Man I wish I'd could live in those days

  • Very cool!

I just saw Jim Messina and his band in concert (real good by the way) and he said Stephen is and always has been his guitar hero. And this comes from a dude that played some with Clapton. Can there be any doubt Stills is one of the best all time? Check out the CSN version of Wooden Ships from this same concert as video proof.

  • Never get tired of watching this!! Stephen 4ever young with his guitar & amazing connection with the audience! Peace! Greetings from Rio de Janeiro y'all!

  • I saw one those Fenders on Roadside Antique show the other night...made in 63'. Single pick-up missing the ashtray cover but shit that thing sounds incredible under Stephens hand.

  • @PocoPortillo what was valued for in the show???

  • big thank you to who posted this - i saw the whole show years ago and this song stuck in my mind - i have been looking for this since-again a big big thanks from ireland

  • This man's work speaks for itself.

He and his "friends" have kept me entertained for many years now.

He and Neil fought over the years because that's what "brothers" do!

    Peace.

  • incredible

  • if anyone wants a definition of excellence of musicianship, stage presence, or charisma.....just take one look at this video...'nuff said............... 5 stars

not to mention...he ROCKS OUT!!!! LOL holy cow...this is better than the original :o)

  • Me gusta mas con Buffalo! xD

  • Simply quite brilliant

  • One of the best musicians ever!

  • brilliant

  • That was AWESOME... takes me back...no one knows....the the treachery we went through. It was hard being young then, kids think they know so much more now.

  • Amazing...love this guy. Has anyone got something from his Album "Illigal Stills". It was released in the late 70's. It was fantastic. Played it in my card for 3 months straight.

    Cheers....R

  • Going to go see him Thursday night (04-15-10) at the House Of Blues in Downtown Disney. Should be a great show!

  • The great thing about a great pop-rock musician is that he doesn't have to play all the notes--he selects what fills the spirit of the song. This couldn't sound as good even if Eric Clapton played it.

  • nice

  • dude, i dont care what anyone says, that rocked HARD for one guy with a guitar.

  • GOT THAT RIGHT!!! STILLS -- there ain't none better!

  • ya very good but with dewey gone and everyone split up kind of fucked eh

  • One man one guitar and a room full of enchanted people

  • @buskerbuoy happens with neil young, J page, jeff beck, john mayer, SRV, and buddy guy too...just such amazing characters and talented people that you cant help but have fun

  • The master at work, Brilliant!!!

  • u can say that again.

  • Two great minds think alike. It is a shame he doesn't come to the United Kingdom.

  • Totally rocks!

  • The Las Vegas Stills....... Love him don't love this.

  • Dyn-o-mite baby, with added nitro!

  • Genius talent for the last 5 decades!!

  • This is effin' brilliant! Stephen Stills has the sexiest voice ever in rock music (or any music) - a fitting gift for this compassionate humanitarian and maestro guitarist...

  • I whole hearedly agree he has a voice only getting better with age. It is rich and full and growlingly sexy . I can,t get enough of him. Love you Stephen he is so handsome here Wow.

  • @mmelindam compassionate humanitarian..really??

  • I agree with mmelindam. Over the decades no one has even come close to is his voice. I think he is vastly underrated and under appreciated. It was delightful to read a post from a like minded rock lover.

  • Rock Musik @ his very very best ! You ever see one of this "gangsta-rapper" , Boygroups, Beauties or wot ever now is in with a guitar in a hand and the folks goes crazy ? 50 cent, J. bieber and all u other hopeless boys and girls.... look this men and see what real music can do. You can learn a lot from S.Stills ... BUT u never ever will have the inner groove and feeling what u need. Neil Young, Cat Stevens, S.Stills or Willie Nelson are heros of millions over 30-40 years. Cheers !

  • @Hanniballus

You should hear Prince rip a guitar up.He general style isn't for me but when it come to a talent beyond his own genre he can play just about anything.

  • This TOTALLY rawks! Stephen Stills is a genius!!! Thanks for postin' this!!!

  • It's always nice to know, I get to see the best performers when they now have liver spots, and they're just not quite as good as they use to be.

  • Did Stephen Stills write this song? Or was it Buffalo Springsteen????

  • zimmiechick: Stills wrote the song while with Buffalo Springfield.

  • pretty fly for an old guy

  • he wrote when he was young

  • fantasticcc thanksss for video

  • as a tele player I gotta say his tone is great. probobly a bassman and a tremoloux as far as amps go. the vintage esquire assumption was correct. CSN was the reason for me to buy a martin in the first place.

  • @martinguitarlover91 I am looking for this very guitar to add to my collection, if you know anyone that has one as old or a little better than this one Stephen is playing write me here on my page damagedangel08 Thanks will buy it if I can get a fair price. Jackie

  • blueballsredhair May you never grow old, idiot

  • i love him!

  • wasn't this song supposed to protest some war or something

  • vietnam i belive

  • Its about the Sunset strip riots

  • Stills playing electric, not accoustic guitar. Who cares? Excellent on either.

  • hmm like that telecaster.

  • esquire (no neck pickup) - gives more twang

it's maybe vintage too - like one of the real early ones but I'm not sure

  • SS is awesome on guitar, and has a great voice too. One of my favorites...

  • I think this is a fine version. Stills is a fine musician. this was a special concert where each of CSN member chose a song to do solo. this is what stills chose to play. haven't heard him play it this way before or since, so everyone please shut up!

  • I thought it was quite good I like how he stops the crowd and tells them how things are done

  • Yeah, if only the crowd were given the same courtesy.

  • you sound like a lot of fun

  • Thats the best you can come up with. You sound as bitter as the Tiger detracters that pick on his inability to drive the ball perfectly all the time. You needn't be so bitter just because your a no talent hack.Come on dude lighten up.

  • 'Tiger detractors' is probably the single saddest phrase I have ever heard. Read a book. Unfortunately I can't comment on what I assume is Tiger Woods golf game as I only really follow sports, not activities. Furthermore, Tiger Woods' drive, and Stephen Stills' singing are not even closely related as one is still good (from what I hear), and the other is fuckin painful. The fact that I have no talent (a true enough guess), really does not affect my opinion here.

  • Let me guess the total of your education and life expierence has enabled you to come up with the phrase"bloated fuck".Excellent well done you have shone your ass sir please any longer and my guess is you would have to put sun block on it due to exposeure. But not to worry since you seem to have your head planted there it should be enough to block out the sun.

  • Last thing to worry about is the composition of my post.

This should be easy for you tou ferret out the meaning with out trying out your demeaning bs about my lack of sentence compositional structure..Fuck Off and die and do the world a favor and expidite that last request.have a nice day.

  • Was it something I said?

  • you know i didn't even recognize this song...he really effed it up. the original was good.

  • He wrote the damn thing, he can sing it anyway he f'n wants

  • Well, I am not signed to a label and I own my own home.. .but this version still does not compare to the orig.

  • Oh my! Should not have been done. Buffalo Springfield on acid.

  • this was a butcher of a classic

  • For What Its Worth - Stephen Stills (Live)

    I agree.

    What was that about!

  • would be lovely you to post your song that kicks ass, come on...do it better than Stephen, stage is yours...and the crowd i suppose??!!!!you incheon....

  • But probably unlike you, he's been signed to a label for 40-odd years. Do you think he'd still be signed, or even signed in the first place, if he was shit?

  • hum.

i think we could all get signed to a label if that means your mate getting a cd burner and giving them to your army buddies.

stop talking trash about something you don't understand.

CS&N and neil young are so far beyond the junk you make in your garage.

in a few years you'll (hopefully) realise how much shit you are talking.

  • link a track, then brag away =^)

  • Nobody can touch you Stephen, you are great, this is the difference between men & boys, go on man, you are the best!!!

  • neil out rocks stephan

  • ...and apples are better than oranges...

  • Ya but this "piece of shit" is famous. And you are still living with your mommy. So shut the fuck up.

  • wow, great cover of a great song. its a sad song if you listen to the lyrics its about war. sad that humans will always have war as long as we live.

  • Cover? HE WROTE IT.

  • I've never heard this version before...love it!

  • they have a place in my heart all four.......

  • One man... With only a guitar... Rocked the damn house! Boo-yah!

  • Extraorinaire la qualité de cette vidéo ! Merci ! je l'ai vu à Bruxelles le 6 octobre c'était génial !!!! Un monument de virtuosité...Un grand artiste !

  • Stephen Stills ROCKS!!! He's been laying down tasteful licks for decades and deserves more accolades. His gravelly, strangled voice reflects the passion of the lyrics behind his vocals perfectly. He's added the funk, rock and soul to CSN (and Y), making them more than just sweet harmonies. Stills brings out the best in his band mates. Taking this classic and performing it "naked" without any back-up shows what a virtuoso his is. Stephen, thanks for all the great music you've given us.

  • At 4:19 the backup band weren't in synch with Stills' attempt at a minor soulful change in the melody.. a shame in a very good performance. A good reason why he sounds SO much better as CS&N, as they know him so well, they can anticipate it, harmonize throughout it, and add more depth to what I'd say is Stills' signature song, along with Suite Judy Blue Eyes. He's always been an amazing guitarist when given the chance to show that talent. Still great to hear. Thanks for posting it!

  • that was a calm response to what I felt about the song. Your adolescent response, no matter how you tried to clean it up. People have gone far deeper in discussions regarding music. So, FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH -If you don't want to hear someone's right to FREE SPEECH, don't read the comments.

    Jeez....!!

  • I don't mind hearing people speak their mind, I am a musician, and a good one. But written bullshit and over analysis is not needed. Besides in this video there is not a back up band, if you listen closely and look closely, it's Steven and two amps behind him. He rips it up on this old classic. A great performance any way you slice it.

I truely mean no harm. At 4:19 there is not a band. This guy would be great no matter what he did or what he played.

  • You're just being silly now.

  • I saw this guy on Monday in Manchester. Apart from the fact that he was accompanied by his band, the version of this song he did was exactly the same as thhis. brilliant. I wish more people were talented like Mr Stills.

  • Thumbs Up, tanner... It rock´s!

  • smoke117 You fool. re-doing a song isnt about making it sound identical to the original one, Its about showing appreciation to its original form by calling it up in essence, but playing it within your own groove. The song still means the same thing it did when it was first produced.

Not to mention, take a look at the guy. This ROCKS considering his age.. and you can bang your head to it, and there isn't even a band backing him up! Straight UP!

Thumbs up my comment if you think smoke117 is dumb

  • We well didn't overreact did we?...lol.

  • It's his song originally anyway

  • @tannerpetrie your a dumbass.. he wrote the original, hes just playing it by himself and not with the rest of buffalo springfield

  • @deadpoeticnewmedic

Your comment doesn't make sense. What does this have to do with my comment?

  • @tannerpetrie - is absolutely dead on, especially in the realm of 60's and 70's folk. You're talking about an entire sub-genre and sub-culture of artists who often covered each other's works. James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, CSNY...personally, I think Stephen Stills did the song PLENTY of justice!

  • anybody know where i can find this version for guitar tabs??

  • IT JUST GOES TO SAY AGE CANT TOUCH HIM HE IS STILL(S) JUST AS BEAUTFUL AS HE WAS AT WOODSTOCK THIS IS ONE FINE FINE MAN OOOOOWHEEEEZOWEEgush gush

  • This takes me right back to my college dorm-room,a bit smokey...with the towels stuffed under the door & the windows wide open,mid-winter. The stereo cranked up with CSN&Y playing.

This is such a good version.

    LJH

  • Damnation!! Great!!

  • an F'NNNN PICK!!!!!!!!!!!!MAN

  • does anyone know what kind of picks he uses?

  • damn he's awesome. listen to his picking on blind fiddler medley or treetop flyer!

  • Where can I get an MP3 copy of this???

  • This is the dvd of the 1991 acoustic show if I can copy it ill sell it to you cheap post me here ok?

  • That guy can sure play the geetar.

  • かっちょいいー でも太ったよね。

  • A marvellows piece of rock&roll! Stephen Stills really beat emall .

    Moeller

  • A marvellows piece of rock & roll ! Stephen Stills really beat em all .

    Moeller..

  • Damn. This just makes me feel good man. LOVE IT!!!

  • is it just me or does this song have blues feel to it? its awsome, go bless his heart. even cancer cant stop him, he has mor balls than anyone i know

  • always a bluesman at heart, brother Stephen, and a true Southern boy; really a great guitarist, underrated by some, beloved in my neck of the woods

  • Great playing and terrific tone on this guitar. Just to clear this up,it is actually an Esquire not a Telecaster. Still made by Fender.Close relative of Tele though, only one pickup at bridge, no neck pickup

  • this must be his favorite he plays this more than ever never heard of an Empire beautiful just like him though

  • Still got it after all these years!

  • Sounded unbelievable.

  • Doesn't get much better!

  • Stills' banter was pretty entertaining. And last time I checked, a Telecaster isn't acoustic.

  • I know what you mean, but those "acoustic" guitars all have pickups in them, so we blur the lines.

But this is no doubt an example of a consumate musician showing his or her chops ... ALONE ... and pulling it off with what may be the best version of the song you'll ever hear.
