This song was written in 1967/68, a backing track was recorded in 1968, Pete Townshend wanted it to be on "Tommy" but couldn't figure out where to put it. They considered releasing it as a single, but didn't. They re-recorded it for a 1970 EP, and it wasn't released until 1974 on "Odds and Sods".
I bought this on vinyl in Austin. It's not a gatefold or trifold, but it has a picture of the band live in the insert. The picture shows the audience Keith standing up wearing shants. I sold it along with a Canned Heat and a Grateful Dead vinyl. Stupid college books. : (
Huge Who fanatic here, and I have to say the chorus Now I'm a Farmer and I'm diggin diggin diggin diggin is maybe the worst most laughable thing Pete ever wrote. Oh well even the great great ones come up with a stinker from to time to time. Tough to listen to parts of it, sorry Who fans that like it, no disrespect intended.
Now I am a farmer is one of my favorite songs . I just can't believe they did a song like this. It is hilarious, yet a masterpiece. Odds and Sods is one of my favorite albums of all time.
It was a compilation of demos and previously unreleased songs, and so it didn't garner as much attention as, say, Who By Numbers which was filled with all new songs.
It has very good reviews though, and it ranges all the way from 1964 to around 1973. A good buy, I have to say.
Well one reason would be for the masterpiece that is on the Who By Numbers album called How Ever Much I Booze...That song outside of his rock operas is the singular most prolific song ever written by Pete and performed by the who. The band is simply spectacular in their execution and talent in laying that number out while pete lays his life out for all to see in a raw and unforgiving lyrical display that I still marvell at and listen to till this day ..33 years later!
I would't call these "throw aways". Odds and Sods was essentially a collection of their quirkier 1960's tunes and some of the early 70's stuff that never really found a home. "Pure and Easy" should have been on Who's Next because it is a great song but when Lifehouse failed to come to be, there was some scaling back on the immense Lifehouse song catelogue to make a "regular" album (i.e. Who's Next). Odds and Sods did pretty well too sales wise.
it cames out late , as a best of "unreleased" song's, but it really rock's and most of the stuff on it is much older than on the "who by numbers" album. It includes also some early versions of songs, used later in the Rock opera "thommy" ! It's a faboulous Album....
dont take evry piece of music the who gives out to serious. It has a nice rhytm as allways... the lyrics are simple.. but catchy :) It's a silly song, but yet joyfull ;)
I was reading a review online the other day, and they criticized this song as being very bland and boring, without much creativity on Townshend's part. Fuck the review, I think this song is brilliant. IDK, but doesn't everyone in the band have some part at least singing here? Rog on lead vocals. Pete and John are on backing vocals. And then we have Keith doing the voices in the middle and end parts of the song right?

The riff @2:10 was lifted from Frank Ifield's 1962 hit "I Remember You", I believe.

It came at that period in 1968 just before Tommy was recorded/eleased. Lots of quirky tunes from that brief era (i.e. Dogs).
