She was better in 93 than she is today, obviously. But even here she pampers herself by slowing down and singing "at" a difficult passage instead of simply doing it without hesitation. I think she is getting too long in tooth to keep singing these days.
This is 90 or 91 I think, not 2000. I give Edita a 4/5 (but I'm a huge fan) - her coloratura alone elevates this performance to near-perfection. Obviously there are faults - dissonant ornaments, aggressive breathing, some laboured phrases. But the high F - wow - and her acrobatics are stunning.
I heard Sutherland live, Sills too, and Caballe and Popp and Bartoli and Ricciarelli and Gasdia etc... I missed Gruberova but I hold her in the highest regard. Today I watch her complete opera performaces on DVD like Abduction and Ariadne. She makes me cry. What a wonderful, wonderful singer.
Sorry, but I beg to differ. I positively LOATHE Sutherland's voice. In her youth, she had a brilliant, sparkling, fluid, shimmery voice. But right around 1960-ish there was some kind of dramatic timbral shift, almost like her voice fell back into her esophagus and never left.
Edita is almost 62 and still sounds like gold. I'm sorry, but there's simply no comparison. Sutherland should have retired long before she reached that age herself.
@jboygb I totaly agree, it is actually really interesting how many admirers Joan Sutheralnd have and how many pople speaks or write against Edita. But you expressed it pertinently. I agree Joan had rare instrument /and fortunately recorded at that time too/ in her prime, but her most recorded and presented performances sound like from the period she should have been already retired. And even more, she could not act comparing to Edita perfect La Fenice Violeta or Barcelona Elisbaetta etc.
Well to cover it all, the truth is - 1st was Callas then sutherland, and last Gruberova. each for their time was the title bearer and resident expert of the art. Sadly don't know who would be after Edita ? perhaps no one ?!
uff, dunno what to say! oh god, I am so embarrassed! belcantoBR don't do that to me, please! I am out of words! If your IQ is as low as the marks you gave her, I am not suprised either..
Now we are talking Edita! Probably the only soprano who can sing these intricate coloratura passages with the precision of Devia! I love her ability of modulating the voice. I agree with hotazzoperastud as far as the characterisation is concerned. 5/4
Ah, she sounds so much better here. Still it is Gruberova singing Rossini, not Semiramide. But my god what is here is SO great. How could you not love her? 5/4

While I agree that Edita is wonderful, Joan is La Stupenda for a reason.

Incredible. Not the best in the contest, but definitely brilliant. 4/4. She's better than Devia, but not quite on Sutherland's level.
Iareto 4 years ago
@Iareto
I disagree. She breaths at 3:57 and 4:03 loud and spoils the line. Devia just creates the most amazing beauty at that time.

Wonderful, Gruberova can really put some excitment into Rossini. Just like a young Sutherland, although Grub does add a little more vocal acting. 5/4
