Brava e sicuramente molto sottovalutata...peccato!

  • Love. Love. LOVE her sound. I have to say that Stratas knows how to act for the camera, however. Wish that they could combine the two performances!

  • it brings me to tears, BRAVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • she's fabulous!

  • What complete crap this is. The fact that Violetta says that she wants to flutter aimlessly from pleasure to pleasure comes from a lot of pain in her. WTF is this? Just another housewife fixing her hair in front of the mirror.

  • @DieSonneSinkt Complete crap? Just because you see only this fragment of een complete movie (directed by her first husband Mario Lanfranchi, by the way), you think you can judge this performance? Who do you think you are?

  • @barefootroeland I have the DVD, I've seen it. What does it matter who I am?

  • My last name is Moffo...

  • Oooof....she sharped the heck out of the very last note! lol. Still, a very great performance!

  • A VERY underestimated and under appreciated singer.

Sadly she sang just too much too quickly and too often in the wrong roles.

When she sang (as here) well she knocked many other sopranos off of the operatic shelf.

    PS:~

When will conductors stop sopranos from singing the high note at the end of this aria.

Verdi didn't write it.It was interpolated by Nellie Melba and has come to be accepted since.

    It shouldn't have!

  • @MrSwifts31 I'm all for staying true to a composer's intentions. But I'm sure Verdi knew opera singers, and they probably were the same back then as they are now: when there's a good chance to show off with interpolated high notes, in good taste, it's going to happen. Plus it makes it more thrilling in the end. If you take away all the high notes that were not written in the score, there would probably be half as many! Far less exciting to listen to. Anna's high note was the icing on the cake!

  • @conradsiebert

I wouldn't dream of criticising Miss Mofffo, she was a very underated singer in my opinion.IF she hadn't sunf too much, too often and sometimes the wrong parts (for the voice) she would have had a longer career in which to delight us.

As regards interpolated high notes.I am the last to decry them,I was just pointing out that persons who say"oh she didnt get the hight note" are often ignorant of the original, not that the interpolation is not thrilling, often it can be.

  • Ms. Moffo--from Wayne, PA! Be proud! Easily the most beautiful soprano ever- (doesn't hurt!!), great actress, and close to being the best singer. I love these staged settings--Also try to get the one of her in Lucia--she is the PERFECT Lucia--terror in her eyes, fabulous acting. She's the James Dean of opera singers--INTENSE!! I adore her.

  • @windstorm1000

in an interview on youtube she states, that she was born in philadelphia, PA....

  • She has such fabulous control in the top range! You don't see someone with this kind of control often enough!

  • the best!

  • the best violetta, beautiful voice and amazing coloratura, this is coloratura, the perfect coloratura.Bella Anna.

  • Moffo was a beautiful Italian American with a beautiful voice. Her debut role was Violetta and by all accounts a huge success. Her Lucia is wonderful as is her Madame Butterfly. Her voice was darkly lyric, rich and dreamy. I've always loved her RCA recording of Traviata. This 60's movie version is great, with beautiful costumes, sets and fine singing by the cast. Brava Anna

  • Pornissimo!

  • she is definitely lip syncing....beautiful voice though :)

  • @grl008: nearly all studio productions of opera involve lip synching. It's simply not possible with editing and sound stages, multiple takes, etc. to have performers actually sing the parts live.

  • @grl008 This is the first time I've come accross this singer. Im not an expert at all. I just like the sound of her voice.Beautiful. It reminds me of Deana Durban

  • LINDO !! DEVERIAM EXPOR MAS EM LUGARES PÚBICO,TOCAR MAS PARA QUE A JUVENTUDE DE HJ TB ADMIRACEM . O QUE MÚSICA E ÓPERA A BELEZA E CONTEÚDO QUE TEM .GRATA.

  • Fabulous stage set, and gorgeous voice:)

  • fuck me what a voice

  • I'm sorry, but I think she's completely different from Callas and I prefer absolutely the second one's. Anna anticipates too notes and prolongs many others needlessly. I'm so sorry for my terrible english but this is honestly the idea I have about this performance.

  • Moffo was wonderful, and so were Callas, Sutherland, Caballe, and Sills.

  • A very talented and beautiful diva, sadly missed. RIP

  • perfect violetta! anna is superb.

  • The sets and costumes are wonderful. When I compare this production to the dreadful, stripped down, "red sofa" Netrebko disaster from Salzburg 2005, I see how far down opera production has fallen in the last few years.

  • @jmuslvr my thoughts exactly. Opera should be elaborate.

  • Her Italian is COMPLETELY lost in her higher notes. Otherwise, this is a grand performance in all aspects.

  • @crazycellist973 oh for goodness sake who does this not apply to! grrrr.

  • Wow te amo anna moffo!!!!!!!!

  • Also remember Renata Tebaldi -- in that generation of divas. And many fine sopranos since then, Teresa Stratas was wonderfrul in La Traviata -- The world is blessed with great voices -- remember Beverly Sills, with her strong & lovely voice & ebullient personality

  • omg! look how small her waist is!

  • Her coloratura is incredible.

  • her coloratura in this role is like no one's........damn perfect!

  • Obožavam njen glas!

  • es paly back esto,ke epna..

  • I love it

  • Looks just like Mike Moffo. Must be in the same family line. Obviously coming from the loins of duder.

  • She looks just like Micheal Moffo. They must be part of the same family line. Must be coming out of Duder's loins.

  • She looks so beautiful here and sings so beautifully.

  • 2009-10-31nii 17 tsagt butsaad ochtsih shig bolloo, ter ued bi horvoogiin hamgiin jargaltai hun baisan bhaa...

  • Anna Moffo is the real Violetta, she sings great and has character depth. This aria is sung so joyfully and gorgeously. I love this movie and the set. Violetta's Parisian home is luxurious. it seems that it might have inspired the more opulent Zefferelli production design for the 1982 film. Also, it seems like a replica of the set used for Mirella Freni's movie version of Traviata. I also love Mirella's Violetta

  • Very nice.

  • @spqrmor i totally agree

  • @spqrmor me too!

  • @spqrmor Callas was unbelieveble brilliant in the 50th and early 60th. Anna Moffo was the opera queen of 68 :)

  • @Leirix61 Agree, Callas was perfectionist and she was unbeaten until her Covent Garden failuare in 1962.But they both performed mostly same repertoire and I prefere here Anna Moffo.Sorry if I offended you by this oppinion of mine.

  • @spqrmor you didnt offend me. How you should, i was the one who responded :)

  • @spqrmor shh - don't tell the callas gang but i agree with you!!!

  • @spqrmor She's good but Maria is best :)

  • So beautiful, so full of life...ever free!

Anna Moffo always brings me to tears when she sing this song. I know she must be giving the angels lessons

  • Wow. Wow.

  • She IS beautiful.

    And her voice is beautiful.

    And the setting is beautiful.

    :)

  • @wildboaralmeriana

    Could not agree more

  • @wildboaralmeriana Wasn't she! Wonderful voice, mastery, and physical beauty. Great career.

  • I love her interpretation! Maybe I'm just biased because I love the aria but there are so many great versions, I love Sumi Jo's as well and they're equally stunning to me

  • Totalmente de acuerdo, también es mi favorita!!!!!

  • PERFECT!!!!!!!!!

  • Absolutely my favourite Violetta...

  • I always love the Eb at the end. Brava.

  • Absolutely SUPER!

  • she's really beautiful. great voice.

  • OMG - and she hits the E flat with ease. Incredible. Brava!!!!

  • stupendous voice and a stunningly beautiful woman...who could ask for more!

  • magnificaaaaaaaa

  • Certified Intergalactic!

  • She had everything Violetta should have!

Beauty, personality and a magnificent voice. Alongside Callas are the top 2 Violettas ever!

  • Lousy lip synching! but she's very beautiful and her voice is great.

  • Moffo is one of my favorites, but I agree that shooting this live would have been better. The lip synching is too obvious and a little distracting.

Still, it's nice to just see this beautiful woman and hear that flawless voice.

  • i love those straight notes at 3:31

  • There is vibrato in those notes.

It's just harder to hear in the higher notes.

    :P

  • WIELKA BOGINI

  • ja juz niechece nic sluchac

  • fantastic

  • she is pretty gem

  • She never had a strong an lyric voice in her life. In fact, the voice was much too small for Violetta. She had the perfect voice for Gilda, Lakme...etc i've seen her on stage

  • Gilda! Certainly! I had never thought of that before, but you must be true. What an idea! Excellent comment! :-)

  • She made a fantastic recording of Gilda (Rigoletto) with Alfredo Kraus and Robert Merrill. Possibly the best studio recording of the role I've heard, and a perfect all around cast. Get it if you can ;)

  • Oh, what a bomb!! I will buy it as soon as I can.

  • I have this set - its AMAZEBALLS!! its got an autograph - dated 1953. Havent been able to make out the signature.....

  • If you like this, check out her early '60s sutdio recording of "La traviata" alongside Richard Tucker (yuck) anr Merrill (yummy)

  • beautiful italian and talented!

Too bad she was made to sing in playback tho

  • An excellen actress and singer! But I doubt she could actually sing in a reclining position like that.

  • Yeah, I find I can't watch this video ever because of the lip-sync... it's so painfully clear they're NOT SINGING.

But wow, I wish I'd been able to see her Violetta or Gilda live.

  • What a beautiful voice! This is what I like to hear on a soprano singing Violetta...a delicate but yet very strong and fully lyric voice...she has no flaws...none, no matter how many people critique her..Anna Moffo was the Violetta of Verdi's dreams....

  • The lip synching is lousy. What a disapointment.

  • i agree with you
