Thats exactly wot happened to me first time rnd, I thought it was sum sort of glitch lol. I went after one of the Mammoths not far from Whiterun, got him to follow me to this little fort/tower, then ran inside and just shot bare arrows at the Mammoth, a giant soon came after me too, but he cudn't get inside and the Whiterun guards tried to ake them on to no avail lol. Takes a while but I took them both down in the end, one way to do it wen ur just starting out at lv6 lol.
