The best damm thing about Letterman is the CBS orchestra and the Top Ten list on occasion. Dave isn't funny. He just sits there and laughs. Paul at least tries to be funny, though he exposes his ignorance of certain subjects in the process. The saddest thing is Dave's not the worst. That title goes to Jimmy Kimmel. Nothing on his show is watchable except Unecessary Censorship, and anybody with a bleep button can do it themselves. True profanity is a little funny if only because it's real.

The issue isn't about the band's music or abilities. I'd love to hear more of the band playing myself. However, everytime Paul opens his mouth he says something idiotic. Granted, his stupidity makes Dave look better, but he could just as easily use Alan or Biff without the irritation Paul's comments cause.
Ed McMahon used to laugh at Johnny Carson's jokes and make comments, too. At least his comments weren't stupid and aggravating like Paul's always are.
I think that the CBS Orchestra is one of the best that television has today, since the old Tonight Show Band with Doc Severinsen left with Johnny Carson in 1992.
yes and no, yes in the sense that they are really good, but no in the sense that they kinda lack in numbers. One of the things about carsons band was it was a tradirional big band, and thats why it gave you this great sound. One thing i dont like about bands on shows today is they're more like a large combo instead of a big band. same goes for conans band. I dunno, i guess i perfer big bands, but thats just me. still good tho

Personally, I think the show would be perfect without Paul. The band has a lot of gifted musicians but too often their talents are overlooked because Paul is acting like a buffoon.
you must be an novice musician. paul is one of the reasons the show works .lol could you imagine that drummer from conan obrien doing the same show .lol see my point.
Paul's a talented musician, although his choice of the musical intros for Fun Facts, Will it Float, etc., do raise questions about his ability to compose or choose intros that aren't simplistic & amateurish.
However, as a 2nd banana, he's rotten. Any time his nasal-tinged voice or idiotic laugh start up, my mute button is used.
Let him keep playing & directing, so long as he keeps his mouth shut..
Frankly, Dave would get more laughs playing off of Alan or Biff than using Paul for that.
Sadly, Paul Shaffer is Dave's one mistake. I respect Dave for his comedic skills, but Shaffer is about the only poor choice he's made over the years. Shaffer should spend more time working on his musical skills and less on lame attempts at humor.
One of the best things Dave could do to improve his ratings would be to work out a trade with Jay Leno and send Paul over to The Tonight Show. Watch Jay's ratings plummet as soon as Paul took over there.

At least your use of the word shit was on target. Shaffer stinks. The band has a lot of really talented musicians and an they've given a microphone to Paul when they should put a muzzle over his mouth and just let him play the keyboard and leave comments to someone with comic intelligence.
Every time Paul opens his mouth to give comedy, he only shows what an idiot he is, better off staying quiet and letting people enjoy the music and the show.
shut the fuck up saying there a disgrace that just shows how patronising ppl can b u know nothing of these fine musicians u stupid arrogant anal cavity lickers
Good musicians. Paul, however, needs to concentrate totally on the music and keep his mouth shut whenever he feels the urge to come up with "humor" he feels the show needs. It's unfortunate that Dave feels Paul's non-musical interjections add anything to the show. I Love Dave. Can't stand Shaffer.
There's no denying Paul's a man. He just isn't a comedian, and could certainly use surgery to take care of his nasal problem.
Leave the comedy to Dave. Even Biff and Alan have far more humor to contribute than Paul could ever hope to.
As for his being a musician, I guess his little musical composition that's the musical intro for "Fun Facts" is one of the best examples of his work. Actually, a 5th-grader could come up with something better than that.

This man is a clown and a buffoon, just like Eubanks. His musicians are a disgrace to the profession. Doc S is drinking heavier to see what late night TV has become. Sammy Davis, George Rhodes, Merv G. and Johnny C. are turning over in their graves.
It isn't just a talk show, it is a full on variety hour...
Your opinion is worthless old man.
Johnny Carson was excellant but David Letterman is very good aswell, Paul Schaffer and his band add to lettermans show to make it even better than it is
Kevin Eubanks however is just hired help and is a useless pile of crap, even more useless than Jay Leno himself.
Paul, the musical "genius", apparently gets to claim credit for the musical intro to "Fun Facts". I'd be embarrassed if I had to include that one on my resume.
About the only skill he has is on the keyboard. His compositions to introduce bits show no originality, and his humor is so far off the radar it's painful to hear him break in with what he considers "humor". Forever ban him from using the make and force him to concentrate on the music.
@neomilan89 i was with you until you start talkin shit about kevin eubanks. how fucking idiotic is it to compare late nite hosts with the fucking band leader?? thats so stupid, for both of you idiots.
Great Band! Paul Shaffer should concentrate more on the music and stop interjecting his "comic stylings" into the show. It would make the show funnier, because Paul ain't funny.

I went to See Letterman Live, if you ever get the chance, You'll Understand the What and Why Shaffer does his Stuff
and "Fun Facts" is the Tune to "Sweet Soul Music"
tkurdilla2 3 years ago
I obviously can't change the opinion who thinks Paul Shaffer is God's gift to the music world and mankind.
I prefer to go with the majority of people who enjoy Dave but find Paul's presence on the show distracting and unnecessary.
It's obvious the show's Emmys haven't been the result of anything Paul has contributed.
No matter where the "Fun Facts" music came from, one would think a musician could come up with something more original.
