The government didn't need SOPA to shut down Megaupload. So why bother to put it into law? And for the record, Megaupload deleted copyrighted material -- sure they missed a lot of it, and sometimes they were a little slow, but eventually it would get removed.
ok, so we pretty much have put a stop to SOPA, however now we need to deal with ACTA. it covers not just the US, but every country that signs the treaty. it not only covers the internet, but also surveillance of anything that you share through private channels. its about 10x worse than SOPA, and it doesnt have as big of a campaign against it as SOPA does. on top of that, its going to pass sooner. ACTA has effects on healthcare, trade, and tourism. this is a serious step in losing our freedom.
Megaupload is a terrible site that violates intellectual property rights and deserved to be shut down. Shutting down Megaupload is the exact kind of thing that the government should be doing, not doing stuff like making ineffective, overly broad bills that harm innocent people like SOPA.
@mrrobotica Megaupload is only a Internet service provider. It is the job of the copyright owner to identify individual violation and sue. Just because going after each violation is not profitable doesn't mean they should corrupt the government so it do their job with public funds. The only reasonable option is to realize there is noting their can do about it and adapt. They are still doing lot of profit, they should focus on improving their share of the market that is profitable.
If SOPA go through with all of this, it will be the end of the world.
The literal Apocalypse, and I'm not fucking kidding. The govt. Has gone to far this time and will end up causing the nation to go fucking bankrupt. This bill will probably be decided towards the end of the year, which may be a coincidence but I this bill is past
Google has tons and tons of money. The problem is Google isnt spending enough in Washington. Google has to start paying off Senators and Congress. Hollywood has been doing it for decades. Google cannot be cheap. Things are getting scary now. Google has to start paying off Congress soon, because if they dont, Hollywood will destroy the internet as we know it....
This wont stop piratism, but I belive it will benefit the corporations driving these laws forwards. Piratism is relatively small problem for the US economy, when compared to recent wars. The monetary effect is like 1/1000000, even though the entertainment industry is booming with huge sales, with game sales records being topped every year.
The people who really do get the most of big scale censorship & bringing down the "free" internet, are the big corporations that offer smaller, localized, monetized versions of the internet like the xbox live for example, or movie rental services. That's why I hate the word exclusivity, because there is no fair competition anymore for most cases, and some movies & tvshows/ sports can only be seen by some particular provider who wants you to subscribe bleeding out as much money as possible. :L
I would say that the democracy is regulated, guarded by the awarness of the ppl. This awarness is provided by media which are supposed to be independant, not affected by opinions and politics or companys which would have some profits form ie. not sharing some information. However we know that this doesn't work like this anymore, many ppl/companys are influencing the media nowadays. I believe that the governments want to censore the web because its independant, and it spreads the true information
What the FBI did with Megaupload is like if a group of users starts uploading copyright contents to youtube and tomorrow, you have every single channel closed without trial.
There were people paying for personal uses and even people who store there their own work (lawyers, artists, teachers). Everyone has lost his money and, far worse, their data and privacy. Are they going to be compensated? No.
Here in Spain our data protection laws are pretty severe, and its fucking crazy to see this happen
What gives ONE government the right to have limitless power over the WORLD WIDE WEB? They shouldnt have, because its affects everyone. We need to fight back! Tell your countries government that you are against it! Dont give in otherwise our freedom will be destroyed
What happens in the USA is disturbing, in my opinion, it goes in the wrong direction. Your government is slowly trying to do what we had in Poland for almost 45 years after II WW. In the name of fighting terrorism, they start to restrict your rights, now censorship, what next- banning gatherings, search homes without warrants, arrests of opposition, intellectuals and freethinkers. All in the name of greater good and fight evil. The world is watching the U.S. Unfortunately, other governments too.
@o0HAWAT0o Do not fear too much for if it comes down to that not only will 75% of the citizens fight back against the government so will the soldiers! Soldiers are loyal to the people not the government!
@o0HAWAT0o I think you are reading too much into this bill. They needed an anti-piracy bill and put it together but it had big problems so it faced backlash.
The intent was to stop piracy but it had so many broad rules that it would have hurt the non lawbreakers more.
Bills get shot down all the time, guess what else happens to em after that? They get rewritten, shot down, rewritten until it finally becomes reasonable to pass into law. SOPA will be back, & it won't stop until it gets just enough regulations to satisfy the most people.
Its funny how so many of you people don't give a fuck about anything that happens in this country, until it directly affects you. SOPA has been out there for months and months and months...yet people are just now finding out. Pay attention people.
Guy 1: "Hey guys, ive got this idea, its mostly just going to get rid of a shitload of jobs, interested in it?" Government: "no why would we want to get rid of jobs" Guy 1: "well it gives us a bunch of power and control" Government: "oh well in that case fuck our economy"
SOPA and PIPA, in their current states at least, are dead. But supporters have already stated that they haven't given up and will bring the bill back at a later date, likely when people's memory of it has faded. The thought of spreading information and awareness is always appreciated though, and we can't forget about it now that it's fallen back from public view.
Which prompted my other comments, they still infringed upon copyrights, they charged for material which was not authorized by them, and the people that did have the rights to said materials were given squat, this was commercial infringement, which is fucked up, as opposed to non commercial infringement (Which these bills are trying to make into a crime, which is wrong).
I'm just sick of people saying "OMG, SOPA did this."
And also, I'm not saying I agree with SOPA, but no one really cared when, say Kazaa, or Limewire were shut down. Why is this any different? Why is it considered "an attack"?
@glROW SOPA allows the us government to easily block any site from people trying to access it from the US. For example if this bill gets passed. Lets say 1 person uploaded a video to youtube that contained copyrighted material; rather then removing that one video the US government would have the power to block access to all of youtube. SOPA is a very dangerous bill that needs to be stopped!
Also, if people paid any attention, SOPA has been well butchered. Very well butchered.
After 13 senators change their minds due to the internet blackout a couple days ago, I'm pretty sure people are starting to realize what an incredible injustice this would be, though the ignorant are still out there.
The thing I think most people don't get about anonymous is that it's not really a group. Everyone is anonymous. What the people did was they hacked the FBI's website and took it down temporarily. This didn't really do much though, because, obviously, they wouldn't have any vital/crucial information on a public website.
@glROW They did not "hack" the FBI's site. They most likely preformed a DOS (Denial of Service) attack. Via twitter the got so many people to visit the site that the site temporally crashed due lack of server resources.
Mega upload and video charged for shows and movies and shit of that nature that they had no legal rights to, thus they were making money off copyrighted material which wasn't under their legal control.
They were not under the fair use act, there were other sources of the same material found for free, yet they made oodles of cash off the work of others, it's not like netflix where everyone is making a buck, they just pirated and made bank, it far more unethical than downloading, Which is OK IMO

The US government's next tactic will be to use something along the lines of their "protect children"-shpiel, and that will CERTAINLY get people aboard without questions.
misinformation about 2012/end of the world, pipe smokin', chocolate, booze, sopa...at this point its anything but knives (which is why most of us are here).
well this is dumb that they did do this and mega up lode is a big part of the things that i do and i down lode a lot of programs from it and i don't think they should do this and i am a premium member and i pay where the hell did my money going and this is bull shit and they do not have the right to do crap like this the government need to re reed the Constitution and stick this federal bull shit up There ass
Thats my thoughts on it too. there is just too much money on the internet and so many companies are based upon the internet and by censoring and essentially putting so many sites down when like they plan to do, millions of jobs will be lost, billions if not trillions of dollars will be lost, then America will really be fucked.
the thing that really pisses me off is that the internet was invented to share files and now the government is stepping in saying that's not okay. and the fact that the government feels it owns the internet, no one owns the internet it is everybody's.
@wanker2us PIPA, which is basically the same thing, is going to be voted on monday I think. If its passed then the SOPA bill is sure to be passed and then the people will no longer control the internet.
@Cultlerylover the other comments are correct. Both bills (SOPA and PIPA) were withdrawn today because of the widespread protest/retaliation. However, the bill ACTA still remains. Look it up, it's just as scary if not worse. <3
I love the video and the fact that you're trying to promote this but it's a little late Jeff. Lamar Smith(R-Texas) the chief sponsor has already pulled it. Keep up the great vids though
in my opinion, our techonology has gotten us to the point where we can watch movies online in our own convenience and for free. the government feels like this is unfair to the movie theaters. this is like saying we should banning factories because it is unfair to those who made homemade goods. both these products have their merits. the factory is quantity, while the homemade is quality. movie theaters will still be used for social purposes.
@stun279 Movie theaters have nothing to do with it. It is unfair to the creators of a movie who put considerable time, money, and effort into their product.
@insomniastic im not sure if i'm missing anything, but we dont pay to watch movies to producers. producers sell to movie theaters who we then pay to watch the movies. not to mention awards they win for making great movies.
The internet is ours, not "theirs" everyone should make their machines available to Anon, for them to launch the most massive anti censorship campaign in the history of the internet to date.
@nikomasalexander8 MEGAUPLOAD is a hong kong based company already. the .com or .ca is just a domain name thing. anyone can register whatever they want anyplace they want. it's used more to distinguish websites that are different in other counties like ebay.co.uk or ebay.ca. Look up megaupload on wikipedia and it will explain their entire franchise. Not sure how the US gov shut down megaupload which is hong kong based. maybe they used us servers too.
I wish the NDAA got as much attention as SOPA is getting...people just didn't seem to care about it doesn't affect them YET. Well, unfortunately, now it's law, and could potentially affect them in the future, by which time they won't be able to do anything about it.
We're losing freedoms a lot lately, we need to put a stop to it. Make sure to protest SOPA as much as you can.
I have been collecting keygens for video editing software for like premier corul video studio powerdirtor and some others so if website goes down goes off sopa I can just repost them on my own website when I get round to make 1 hope it does not get that bad
I think you will find that youtube uses the sony servers which will make it impossible for the US government to shut it down US government says shut youtube down japanese government says kiss our butts Im only 80% youtube is hosted on sony yes google is huge but its cheaper to rent server farms than own them. However wikki is being threatened by sopa
Vote for RON PAUL 2012. He's the only candidate who came out and spoke about SOPA and PIPA and he introduce legislation that repeals the indefinite detention provisions in the 2012 NDAA.
Megaupload, was a site that did tons of copyrighted media and should've listened to warnings about their shady dealings. SOPA is dead now, (it died when most of Congres turned against it) and now they are onto the next version of it. Funny thing is the leaders in the Government don't know shit about the internet at all, they have secretaries that do everything online for them, and yet they can make laws to control it. It's all bullshit.
OK, now know search NDAA. da govment can now Kill you if they want to. bush said it, "your either with us, or your with the terrorist". its offically illeagle to disagree with them. shits gettin stupid fast Ha
Big brother has always wanted more control. Now they have it (on another level). I understand if something is your idea, creation, or property you have the right to protect it but not by infringing the rights of others by eliminating due process.
@flobberdob69 yeah I decided to shave my head and leave the pubes...Ill grow it longer to see how it looks, a big beard and bald head always seem to be a bit intimidating to some, lol
@Locke99GS Yeah, because mentioning an atheist's beard style is really offensive. I'm going to assume you're really really stupid, so I'll just stop talking to you.
@Adam12088 I'll assume you've never met any fanatical Christians, but please, disregard me; you're very obviously a short-sighted, shit talking, troll.
@Adam12088 Surprisingly, tarot cards seem to offer better insight than your random pouting. Are you mad or something? That's a lot of off-the-wall insults. You kids are soft these days.
My previous assessment of you still holds; no need for you to continue to prove it's accuracy.
Dont think for a minute that this is over. All Lamar Smith (SOPA author) is going to do is staple the SOPA bill the back of his Protecting Children from Online Pornographers Act. And it will fly like greased lightning through congress, because no member of congress wants to be called a pedophile. Look at Lamar Smith's record of bill proposals. Most of them are trying to control the internet in the name of something.. dude doesn't quit.

GregPena97 1 month ago

in my opinion, our techonology has gotten us to the point where we can watch movies online in our own convenience and for free. the government feels like this is unfair to the movie theaters. this is like saying we should banning factories because it is unfair to those who made homemade goods. both these products have their merits. the factory is quantity, while the homemade is quality. movie theaters will still be used for social purposes.
stun279 1 month ago
@stun279 Movie theaters have nothing to do with it. It is unfair to the creators of a movie who put considerable time, money, and effort into their product.
insomniastic 1 month ago
@insomniastic im not sure if i'm missing anything, but we dont pay to watch movies to producers. producers sell to movie theaters who we then pay to watch the movies. not to mention awards they win for making great movies.

Jeff, do you know how the ".com/.ca /etc." thing works? Could these websites be replaced in other countries? i.e megaupload.ca
nikomasalexander8 1 month ago

Big brother has always wanted more control. Now they have it (on another level). I understand if something is your idea, creation, or property you have the right to protect it but not by infringing the rights of others by eliminating due process.
