And have you considered playing the 8th Grandes Etude? It has never been played at the correct speed with out many mistakes. Its name is Presto Strepitoso and is quite rare.
Valentina, I do not think that Wikipedia -which you copied- is right about Liszt never playing his Rondo fantastique. This sounded bizarre: Liszt composing music he could not play?? So I looked around a bit and found that he did indeed play this Rondo in 1837 in the "Salon de M. Erard". There is even a report of the evening in "Le Monde" a contemporary journal, stating that Liszt playing his Rondo fantastique was "le clou de la soirée", in other words the summit of the evening.
Dear Ms. Lisitsa... I can definitely see and hear how confounding and difficult this piece is, but since i can't play either of the two pieces, i was wondering which is more difficult.... This or the Liszt Grand Galop Chromatique? Personally, it seems as if the Galop is so much more finger bustingly difficult than this... but then again that is from the purview of someone whom cannot play these pieces... i would love your thoughts on these 2 DEVASTATING Pieces!
Trust me, I've looked at the score, and this positively demonic piece is the worst I've ever seen yet. For example -- imagine taking your right hand, and having the index and ring fingers AND your 3rd and pinky finger trilling together at the same time, all while your thumb has to carry the melody, all going on at a hand-span of about 10 notes (more than an octave). That's only one example of the horrors of this piece, and there are many =0
I am on my 5th listen today to this - having heard it a few times as well. No matter how many times I hear it, the same joy and smily comes to my face. Thanks Valentina for championing this most entertaining work.

Dear valentina, I just recieved confirmation from the theater in Delft Netherlands that you will play the Rondo next week as part of the program which I reguested. Thanks very much for this and I am looking forward to hear you play. I dont like to rate pianist since its about the music and not a competition but for you I have to make an exception. You could have competed together with Jorge Bolet, Thallberg and Liszt in the famous Paris duel in 1837. Enjoy your trip to the Netherlands.
I had never heard this piece before! One can tell it is really tough to play, and I'd say it's also tough to listen to. Early Liszt liked showmanship a lot. I'm so glad he turned into old Liszt. ;) Anyway, congratulations! This is a great video!
After watching almost all your videos, I have to say that you are definitely the best pianist I've ever heard on Youtube, and probably the best I've ever heard period!
I can´t understand why, but I am always amazed by your amazing technique and musicality! I think you are the best modern-time classical pianist. If you ever die, I will go to your funeral. Just to oner you as ''The best pianist I've ever heard playing.'' So difficult, technical. And still it sounds so natural, such an organic sound. The Bösendorfer is also the perfect translator for your musicality!

For me,this is a bad moment.Your comment was as a knife over me.In Lima, after your recital you accepted my uploaod to YT.It was in 2010,when gave the music by Schubert-Liszt.You or your husband let me know later respect YOUR videos.I hes been make what Alexei asked me.I NEVER wanted to produce this situation.I only try to do the best for your trip to Buenos Aires, with Mr.Videla.For me all this is very bad for my health.I cannot contact you because I don´t use Tweeter.
@jrgliebermann216 Mr. Liebermann, I NEVER told you that you can upload it on YT, neither have I gave you permission to copy my YT videos . You use my photo on Twitter - why, may I ask? Also, why did you impersonate me on Facebook? I lost hugely important concerts because of you - because a very important presenter thought it was me who is posting pirated videos. I was accused of being a thief while you are the one who has no shame. You were busted by YT for stealing 100s of videos everywhere.
Did Liszt wrote this piece as a personal check on his own technic ? Just to make sure?
I am amazed how Valentina can memorized such an avalanche of notes. Let me know, Valentina: are you ever going to play this piece in concert or record it? If you read this, I know you are smilling..
Wow, Valentina, this just blew my mind. I discovered this via a reddit link, and I'm so happy I did. If you ever perform in Ft. Worth, I'll be there. You're amazing... thanks for this, and Happy New Year!
Ms. Lisitsa.... is this piece more difficult than the "Grand Galop Chromatique"??? This seems in all honesty to not even approach the magnitude of that train wreck of difficulty! I think i died when i saw how luminous and effortless your playing of the "Grand Galop" was and i hope you make it to Michigan sometime soon in the future so i can applaud you loudly and ferociously!
@KLCC839 This is about one million times more difficult than grand galop chromatique, at least based on sight reading both of them, and Lisitsa's comments about this one... If its WAY more difficult than Feux Follets, its hard to imagine it could be easier than the galop :~)
I don't know if there is a one on one relationship but on the string bass the distance from, say, first position to fourth position is significant. Yet the body memorizes that distance and one can move back and forth with remarkable accuracy as long as one stays in practice. I'm sitting beside my piano and just looking at the keyboard I'd say that the distance, say, from middle C down to the lowest A is probably greater than a shift from 1st position to 4th position on a bass. What say you?
You play so wonderfull, can't stop watching your videos,
When are you in Lyon or Paris?
Thanks for posting, and I notice that the video could have been guided by a pianist himself, because moste of the time, we can see your hands and the technical perfection of your style, what make difference with other video's where we can see the interprete expression's face... whitch would be nice as well, but the most amazing is your perfect way of moving and playing...
Thanks to the composer , he can translate what is in his head , and listning your amazing interpretation bring us in the time Listz played himself. I guess he would like the sounds of the current pianos like this one
@jorhaze False modesty is an oxymoron. My chess coach used expression " lucky like a first prize winner" - it makes more sense, doesn't it? Without false modesty I can say - a great many times, even though it was a lucky night>
@ValentinaLisitsa With all the false modesty I can summon I would have to say that I was never that good at chess, because I do not care about winning in a setting in which inhibiting emotion is so central.
Because you replied to my comment I had decided to take a leap and hear what a grand piano really sounds like when you play it.
Alas, you are sold out in Haarlem. Must be my bad luck.
I wish you all the luck in the world with mine included if that is what you need though. :)
Where did you read that Liszt "failed uetterly" at this piece?
I've read a massive biography of Liszt (the Alan Walker one) and this is never mentioned in there. I thought the only piece had problems with was the Tannhäuser Ouverture...
So if you do decide to do this as an encore it will be a gamble even to you? Interesting because I have not really seen any brave pianist even dare to upload it. xD Love It!
@ValentinaLisitsa I would say so lol. Watching this was just something else to me. Especially for my goal when i'm older to be a some what pianist. And like I said before that invite to seattle and everything from you, videos etc has just been plain amazing. Can't wait for more again. :)
After listening to this over and over I'm gonna have to say that what impresses me most is at 5:10, the seamless way you bring out the most important notes is just mesmerizing.
@ValentinaLisitsa sounds like an interesting challange then... Not that I'm going to be able to actually play it, but I like to give it a try because I don't think you can get better at piano without trying to play pieces high above your own level from time to time :P
Only one word: AWESOME! I'm dying for more :) And of course I'm not able to play such a piece :) And it doesn't hurt to watch you playing :) Always, always a pleasant experience :-)
So was Liszt basically just showing off his technical skills with this piece cause after looking over the sheet music it seems impossible. Obviously you've proved that it isn't completely impossible just but just very very very difficult.
@ValentinaLisitsa Ack, he's quite good, but I'm pretty sure that you have the needed skills to play better. I think we can agree that Hamelin has an awesome technique, but I bet you can interpret better than him! Just a wish. :)
Valentina, there´s many "unplayable" pieces of music. Have you ever tried the Studies on Chopin´s Studies by GODOWSKY ? Sometimes 3 studies played at the same time. Have you ever tried 32 variations on "Pueblo Unido Jamas sera Vencido" from Rzewski ? Fantastic ! Have you tried some pieces of Nikolai Kapustin ? - Good interpretation, though.
I live in Helena, Montana, just four and a half hours west of Billings. I play string bass in the Helena Symphony, Perhaps some day you'll be in Helena playing with our symphony and I would dearly love that.
Amazing performance. I live in Montana, USA where we seldom have an opportunity to enjoy live performances by world class pianists such as Valentina. It is therefore with great appreciation and pleasure that I come to You Tube on a regular basis and listen to Valentina most of all.
Skill level: Unhuman.
Your move, asians.

If you read this, I know you are smilling..
pebepebe1 1 month ago
@pebepebe1 This was actually played for a recording session and yes, she's played it in at least one concert (the one I attended to LOL).

KLCC839 1 month ago

Dear Valentina
You play so wonderfull, can't stop watching your videos,
When are you in Lyon or Paris?
Thanks for posting, and I notice that the video could have been guided by a pianist himself, because moste of the time, we can see your hands and the technical perfection of your style, what make difference with other video's where we can see the interprete expression's face... whitch would be nice as well, but the most amazing is your perfect way of moving and playing...
Your fan from Lyon

Thanks to the composer , he can translate what is in his head , and listning your amazing interpretation bring us in the time Listz played himself. I guess he would like the sounds of the current pianos like this one

From my experience luck can be influenced greatly by skill, which basically is experience too. How many times did you have to redo this video?
Your false modesty is still very charming and I love all the videos. Don't stop posting them while I am alive.
jorhaze 1 month ago
@jorhaze False modesty is an oxymoron. My chess coach used expression " lucky like a first prize winner" - it makes more sense, doesn't it? Without false modesty I can say - a great many times, even though it was a lucky night>
ValentinaLisitsa 1 month ago 13
@ValentinaLisitsa With all the false modesty I can summon I would have to say that I was never that good at chess, because I do not care about winning in a setting in which inhibiting emotion is so central.
Because you replied to my comment I had decided to take a leap and hear what a grand piano really sounds like when you play it.
Alas, you are sold out in Haarlem. Must be my bad luck.
I wish you all the luck in the world with mine included if that is what you need though. :)

@ValentinaLisitsa
Where did you read that Liszt "failed uetterly" at this piece?
I've read a massive biography of Liszt (the Alan Walker one) and this is never mentioned in there. I thought the only piece had problems with was the Tannhäuser Ouverture...
alsa005 1 month ago
So if you do decide to do this as an encore it will be a gamble even to you? Interesting because I have not really seen any brave pianist even dare to upload it. xD Love It!
zachattack19942 1 month ago 2
@zachattack19942 It's only good for encores - usually by the end of a concert people are not so picky :-)
ValentinaLisitsa 1 month ago 11
@ValentinaLisitsa I would say so lol. Watching this was just something else to me. Especially for my goal when i'm older to be a some what pianist. And like I said before that invite to seattle and everything from you, videos etc has just been plain amazing. Can't wait for more again. :)

After listening to this over and over I'm gonna have to say that what impresses me most is at 5:10, the seamless way you bring out the most important notes is just mesmerizing.

What would you say are the things in this piece that make it so difficult? Just curious..
Charlaweyd 2 months ago
@Charlaweyd It is a pure matter of luck , no amount of drills will do it. Some of those skips are beyond of what can be really done on the piano.
ValentinaLisitsa 2 months ago
@ValentinaLisitsa sounds like an interesting challange then... Not that I'm going to be able to actually play it, but I like to give it a try because I don't think you can get better at piano without trying to play pieces high above your own level from time to time :P

thanks (Gracias!!!!!!) from Spain.

Is it that hard? The hungarian rhapsodies are really hard too. Howvever, it has series of repeated notes so I can't say it's easy.

@JohnRift Hungarian Rhapsodies can be learned well enough to play well every time. This is like rolling a dice .

eliaquimsousa 2 months ago
So was Liszt basically just showing off his technical skills with this piece cause after looking over the sheet music it seems impossible. Obviously you've proved that it isn't completely impossible just but just very very very difficult.

Valentina, please, please record some Godowsky studies. We need a competitor to Hamelin's work!
FreakinTiger 2 months ago
@FreakinTiger what about Carlo Grante ? Didn't he do them ?
ValentinaLisitsa 2 months ago
@ValentinaLisitsa Ack, he's quite good, but I'm pretty sure that you have the needed skills to play better. I think we can agree that Hamelin has an awesome technique, but I bet you can interpret better than him! Just a wish. :)
FreakinTiger 2 months ago
Challenged accepted!
Only if my piano teacher lets me play this. He'll probably say that this is too hard and it's a waste of time lol
tjtheplay 2 months ago
Valentina, there´s many "unplayable" pieces of music. Have you ever tried the Studies on Chopin´s Studies by GODOWSKY ? Sometimes 3 studies played at the same time. Have you ever tried 32 variations on "Pueblo Unido Jamas sera Vencido" from Rzewski ? Fantastic ! Have you tried some pieces of Nikolai Kapustin ? - Good interpretation, though.

Amazing performance. I live in Montana, USA where we seldom have an opportunity to enjoy live performances by world class pianists such as Valentina. It is therefore with great appreciation and pleasure that I come to You Tube on a regular basis and listen to Valentina most of all.
