Janis speaks to all of us so beautifully, in her heartfelt and plaintive style that laments a life of lost love, lost aspirations and lost hope. She speaks to me from the grave to remind me of what is truly of value in this all to short of a life that we are blessed to live.
Wow, this is so rare, how did you find it???? I been a Janis obsessed for more than 25 years and I aint ever heard this. Love it. Wonder why it hasn't been released before?
@udor1962 I think you misunderstood. I was talking about this recording. its not on any of Janis' albums, not on any releases, not even in rare pearls. i love her introducing the song. Its okay, maybe its a language thing. I cant speak German either.
God...how many of us have suffered as did Janis with "The Devil on Earth". How many cold and hot showers can be taken...how many joints, elbow, knees, shoulders and backs can cry out loud for HELP! I've done enough rolling around in and outside my head. It's a party for a week then it becomes a JOB no man should ever have to fight with. I thank God I am not where I have been before so many times. Brothers and Sisters...you know what I mean...and so did Janis and so many other muscians.
For all the horrors in the world...and there is so many. Janis Joplins death still stands out as soo very wrong. She should still be with us. So intelligent, so much to give and learn about herself. One of the big losses in this life. Wish you were still with us Janis. If it's possible that you have some kind of awareness, i hope you are happy xxx
this sound like a micheal jackson move, not to be funny. but its sad that they have so much shit out there that is deadly more than it helps. may as well be heroin.
What is the song that has the lyric "what the hell is gong on in here??" I do believe it is a Janis Joplin song, i do not remember how it starts but i do know these lyrics are in it.
I N-E-V-E-R heard this song before!!! 09AUG2011!!! Janis Joplin was the logical extension of COL Parker looking for a White Man who could sing race music like a Black Man. He found his White Black Man and Elvis was his name. Janis was a Bessie Smith channeled into a White Woman's body. Amy Winehouse and Janis Joplin held hands and walked into the fire (27yrs old @).
udor1962 you got one hell of a taste in music...............you have done some of the best uploads on youtube.........my x girlfreind looks remarably like janis

@damongirl66 "some people are" addicted? like some people are short or hazel-eyed or intelligent? no. wrong. it's not an uncontrollable state of being. it is possible, if one is careful and smart about it, to use drugs recreationally and not be dependent. your attitude is the unfortunate flipside of the AA mentality. we are NOT powerless. these are only drugs, we're stronger than they are.
@damongirl66 drugs, janis, dependancey, is all just thought, thought is suffering, realising the thoughts, letting them be part of the flow, is freedom....itt is just a constant flow of thoughts...with respect, keep at it kid, karl, lancs uk
@damongirl66 Drugs are fun for a few minutes, then you wake up and regret it all. I know. I hope maybe someday you and me both can find help. My problem is that most of my vices are legal and those are the most hardest ones to break. God bless ya and I hope all the best!! :) Janis is a God. Goddess. Whatever that word is to describe someone who held your hand through it all, smiled at you and silently said, "I know.".
@damongirl66 So you're aware that you have a problem, and you look to a talented woman who died tragically young 40 years ago to tell you it's ok? Find a good therapist and get your shit together. The 7 people who liked this, I don't even know what to say.
@damongirl66 Yes, there are lots of people that are, but you can get help before it's too late, like what happened to Janis. Please get help and stop. You can do it sweety. God bless.
@JoLeana76 Hey everyone, thanks for the so many unexpected responses, good and bad. What I meant by 'validates' is that the verses tell me it is not shameful to be an addict. I have been off hard drugs for 16 years but I am still an addict and always will be. Broskijohansson, you are a judgemental prick! Your holier-than-thou attirtude sucks and I would never ask you for help even for a papercut. Sheesh!
am a massive janis fan and never heard this, and am frankly ashamed!!!! this is one of the best that i have heard!!!!! am excited! love janis, always think better is going to come along but it never does!!!!
@stevenlillie SAME HERE!! I've been a huge Janis fan for like 15 years and I thought I heard everything she recorded. I was shocked when I ran across this one. It is, in my opinion, one of the best songs she did. Hearing this reminds me why I fell in love with her music in the first place.
That was her breaking point with college. She had gotten straight and back to school. I can't imagine the hate and derision she put up with. When I was very young people in my school kept talking about her looks. I was talking about her music. I was one of about 6 people who had even heard of the Dead, so this WAS a long time ago. Looking back now as a grandma, she was beautiful!!! God, I wish she could have known that at least once in her life!
@problem49 i tought she was voted the ugliest boy in school??and yeah i agree ,where are those ppl now??she was only around for 27 yrs,but hell, did she make it worth while!!
@rawaiii You're right. The depth of their creativity only went as far as inventing the cruelest, most mean-spirited appellation their nasty little minds could contrive. The dregs of the frat house in full flower, and this probably constituted the most notable achievement of their miserable, insignificant lives .
@rawaiii Janis was in college in Texas, and they ran a poll in the College Newspaper for the Ugliest Man on Campus. Janis was the voted the Ugliest Man on Campus. Imagine how hurt she must have been. That's when she decided to hitchike to California with Chet Helms. There he had her sing with Big Brother and the Holding Co. The rest is history. :)
Janis was a shooting star: Burned so hot, so brightly but so briefly before ionizing into the cosmos. She leaves behind something buried deeply in the soul of everyone who ever heard her sing or watched her perform. I miss her. What a talent.
i saw janis in chicago in 1968. she was gone on booze and coke but it didn't matter. we were all gone on the war and the disintegration of America that is still happening today. we were living as much as we could in the moment and she stood still and faced her fate and felt it and told us all about it and it was beautiful. she ain't in hell she lives in us all.
If she had died in a car accident and had written a song called Lord Don"t You Buy Me a Mercedes Benz (for example) would you have written: "*P. S. Please NO Cars!* in relation to Janis in this and other texts..." You are absurd.. This song is about an opiate drug and her relationship to it. She loved Drugs, Sex and Rock and Roll. Who are you to censor others and pass judgment on what things fans should value. Janis is no Marie Osmond.
Absolutely AMAZING. She takes a great, CLASSIC Buffy Sainte-Marie song & not only makes it her "own" by adding more lines but somehow manages to make it more spooky & "American Gothic" all at the same time. Just another example of her talent. Thank you for posting this. I have been a longtime fan of hers yet have never heard this before! Wonderful.
CLASSIC! So many great cover versions of this song! The Byrds, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Donovan, The Charlatans, Janis Joplin, Gram Parsons...Doesn't get much better!
it is so hard no more to listen today a good musician in relation to janis .... & this since 40 years ... i have no drugs , have no need drugs ... p & l more i have no & a bad english i have also ;-)
@udor1962 this is what I think. I never used drugs, never wanted too and also think that all good music barely ended on 1969 and died progressively until 1975. All we have here is noise and commercial crap. The sixties was an explosion of culture, art, music and a revolution of society. We are all suffering from apathy today.
@HairyPotter2012 i agree alot with your comment. i was 18 in 1969,,,the greatest year on earth,,,and in some ways the saddest. having been in L.A. i was right there,,,where the action was. i saw janis at a after hours show when i was 17 at the hulabaloo in hollywood. the explosion of creativity in the 60's form the groundwork set in the 50's by rocks founder's,.. will never be again. but there are some incredibly fantastic songs that are out here...and i mean FANTASTIC. (check my fav's)..peace
@lonelysingingdoll They're both just shattering. I never heard this version before -- takes the breath away for sure. Thanks mucho for the posting, udor 1962.
Buffy St. Marie's original version is just ok, but personally I prefer Janis's. The lyrics change to it that she made and of course her searing voice (love that natural tremolo of hers too) is what makes it so wonderful and kinda blows Buffy's out of the water if you ask me : )
Words can't express the talent of this woman enough. She was amazing. Her singings makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Always a good sign. Anyone who's self-destruct button has already been pushed within themselves just makes it to death quicker by throwing drugs into the mix. Some people are lucky to escape unscath and come out the other side, unfortunately for Janis that wasn't the case.
it was so - janis was in drugs - sorry , have only in this video bring reality in my best what i have today - we are livin in a way to god " have janis say" ... ok ? lets drink peace & love ... tnx
rest in peace was no the dream of janis - revolution was the dream against war ( to this time war in vietnam special )
no a chance for peace worldwide - this was the dead for janis, jimi h , jim m. a.s.o. to this time - we are today no a little tap go in better future - we need old songs for a better world & need also new strategy against world wide imperialism ... p & l & hope you understand ...
That's a piss poor attitude. If you were truly revolutionary you would know such a project takes the hearts and minds of a region, nation, world - the young, the old, the rich and the poor. Giving up is letting the system win.
Watch the Kent State Videos, they thought the system would not kill them. Do the Gandhi thing?
Passive resistance? Ask 'em about how well that worked at Tienemen Square. Advice? Stories? listen to the Beatles Revolution ! Lennon sang " Well you know
I don't know how I could have not heard this for so many years, but I'm glad I finally have the privilege. What an amazing song, amazing voice, amazing soul.
un-effing-believable! thank you for sharing this on You Tube! I have been such a huge fan of Janis for so long, and I've NEVER heard this before and I can't even speak right now. It's been years since I've heard "new" Janis material, and I just got the FIX of a lifetime! Janis never ceases to amaze me. I love you Janis....xo
I knew this song when sung by Buffy Sainte-Marie, but when I learned that Janis did a rendition of it, I could not think of a more fitting performer to take a stab at it. She sings her heart out and God bless her for it! Thank you udor1962 for allowing me my first listen to this gem!
Cod'ine is originally a Buffy Sainte-Marie song, but Janis' lyrics are very different. She pretty much re-wrote the song and reworked the tune a little.
There's only a short live clip of Buffy singing her version and I'm trying to get the full song up here. It's incredible, everyone should hear it!
There will never be another Janis! I wish I could have met her. I love the way she sings even though alot of people don't like it. I don't care what anyone thinks Janis rocks!
It certainly felt like ball and chain, 'cause you represented and died for what we felt so, so, strongly about: that something was really wrong in a world where money rules over compassion and feelings. RIP, Janis. See ya
totally...theres a little Janis in all of us. Booch is my nickname....cause I looked like John Belushi when I was born, Papa called me Booch my whole life. LOL
This was an audition tape, but later other instruments were added to give the tracks a "studio feel" ---at least from what I read. It's on also on the bootleg "Blow All My Blues Away".
Janis speaks to all of us so beautifully, in her heartfelt and plaintive style that laments a life of lost love, lost aspirations and lost hope. She speaks to me from the grave to remind me of what is truly of value in this all to short of a life that we are blessed to live.

god, i love janis joplin
love her so much
AND buffy, they are both in my top three favorite female singers of all time.
i can't tell which i love more.
buffy's is very raw...with the simple guitar and nothing else but her voice makes it chilling.
but of course janis joplin
god janis joplin!
both beautiful
can't compare

@lovesGenet The heroin was too pure and she took too much of it.

Buffy St. Marie's original version is just ok, but personally I prefer Janis's. The lyrics change to it that she made and of course her searing voice (love that natural tremolo of hers too) is what makes it so wonderful and kinda blows Buffy's out of the water if you ask me : )

@WavyGravy22 I prefer Buffy's.

Words can't express the talent of this woman enough. She was amazing. Her singings makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Always a good sign. Anyone who's self-destruct button has already been pushed within themselves just makes it to death quicker by throwing drugs into the mix. Some people are lucky to escape unscath and come out the other side, unfortunately for Janis that wasn't the case.

rest in peace james!
nothinglikeafender 2 years ago
@nothinglikeafender
rest in peace was no the dream of janis - revolution was the dream against war ( to this time war in vietnam special )
no a chance for peace worldwide - this was the dead for janis, jimi h , jim m. a.s.o. to this time - we are today no a little tap go in better future - we need old songs for a better world & need also new strategy against world wide imperialism ... p & l & hope you understand ...

That's a piss poor attitude. If you were truly revolutionary you would know such a project takes the hearts and minds of a region, nation, world - the young, the old, the rich and the poor. Giving up is letting the system win.

Being of the 'new' generation, I would like to think that old schoolers like you could offer us your advice and stories. Not withdraw from the fight.

They got the guns, they got the numbers.
Watch the Kent State Videos, they thought the system would not kill them. Do the Gandhi thing?
Passive resistance? Ask 'em about how well that worked at Tienemen Square. Advice? Stories? listen to the Beatles Revolution ! Lennon sang " Well you know
You better free your mind instead "

It's been very influential and emulated by singers like Nina Hagen and Diamanda Galas in their own way.

I knew this song when sung by Buffy Sainte-Marie, but when I learned that Janis did a rendition of it, I could not think of a more fitting performer to take a stab at it. She sings her heart out and God bless her for it! Thank you udor1962 for allowing me my first listen to this gem!
jwalsh67 2 years ago 4
Does anyone know if she wrote this song or where did it come from?
JanisLJoplin 2 years ago

RIP, Janis. See ya

This was an audition tape, but later other instruments were added to give the tracks a "studio feel" ---at least from what I read. It's on also on the bootleg "Blow All My Blues Away".
