  • Janis speaks to all of us so beautifully, in her heartfelt and plaintive style that laments a life of lost love, lost aspirations and lost hope. She speaks to me from the grave to remind me of what is truly of value in this all to short of a life that we are blessed to live.

  • Being obsessed with her all this week... I have no idea why...

  • Found this on t0rrent. Shame the record quality is so poor, this is some of her best work.

  • Only poppin' pills and DexAmphetamines to keep Us Good. Have been takin it every Day for 18-22 years. Never hooked. Ciao

  • Wow, this is so rare, how did you find it???? I been a Janis obsessed for more than 25 years and I aint ever heard this. Love it. Wonder why it hasn't been released before?

  • @paulcastaway

A Love Is NOT Rare !

Janis was a dream & was a love - this music is peace & love & unforgetten!

sorry this comment is in bad english - i am a east german ...

  • @udor1962 I think you misunderstood. I was talking about this recording. its not on any of Janis' albums, not on any releases, not even in rare pearls. i love her introducing the song. Its okay, maybe its a language thing. I cant speak German either.

  • @paulcastaway

No Probleme ;-) I understand my friend! But I have here in Germany the new YT & see so NOT good a question!

James must You tell your question - my video is no forbidden ( in germany in relation have no chance & I must say Very TNX James ! )

East german rock is here for germany on yt total forbidden - but this a other "fuck"

    TNX for Your understand,

    sincereley udo

  • Best singer in human history, full stop.-

  • @Popi80s Amen.

  • God...how many of us have suffered as did Janis with "The Devil on Earth". How many cold and hot showers can be taken...how many joints, elbow, knees, shoulders and backs can cry out loud for HELP! I've done enough rolling around in and outside my head. It's a party for a week then it becomes a JOB no man should ever have to fight with. I thank God I am not where I have been before so many times. Brothers and Sisters...you know what I mean...and so did Janis and so many other muscians.

  • @jcp0129eek What will You with God ???

The Reality here in East Germany is so !!!

  • For all the horrors in the world...and there is so many. Janis Joplins death still stands out as soo very wrong. She should still be with us. So intelligent, so much to give and learn about herself. One of the big losses in this life. Wish you were still with us Janis. If it's possible that you have some kind of awareness, i hope you are happy xxx

  • @OP Brilliant!

There was a better version as a cover -will try to find it ;)

  • Beautiful song and a beautiful rendition. Why take it farther than that? It's the music.

  • This is so haunting

  • this sound like a micheal jackson move, not to be funny. but its sad that they have so much shit out there that is deadly more than it helps. may as well be heroin.

  • ohhh shit, sing it!! never heard this one. JANIS 4EVER! damn you, grim reaper!

  • I love how Janis covered Buffy Sainte-Marie! Two of my favorite female artists!

  • LOVE ~~

  • Thank you for your interest - please write me personally if you have questions about our love Janis!

  • Janis where have you gone ??? :-(

  • What is the song that has the lyric "what the hell is gong on in here??" I do believe it is a Janis Joplin song, i do not remember how it starts but i do know these lyrics are in it.

  • Another band from 1970 named The Wizards From Kansas also had a song called: "Codine".

  • Fantastic 65.......!!!

  • This song was recorded by several Garage Rock bands but this version by Janis is really quite good, I like it!

  • each person has to stand up if change is gonna come

  • GREAT.

  • my mom went to school with Janis said she was a hoot in Port Arthur ,Tx

  • my X girlfreind looks incredably like Janis

  • I love you Janis and Codine love me while 30years.

  • I N-E-V-E-R heard this song before!!! 09AUG2011!!! Janis Joplin was the logical extension of COL Parker looking for a White Man who could sing race music like a Black Man. He found his White Black Man and Elvis was his name. Janis was a Bessie Smith channeled into a White Woman's body. Amy Winehouse and Janis Joplin held hands and walked into the fire (27yrs old @).

  • big cup of peace and love in my strofoam cup

  • Janis' lyrics are even cooler tha the origional, my favorite version of this song used to be the Leaves version. Now it is definitly this one!!

  • no one will ever come close to having talent like she did.

  • Reply to KKristielevie(/) sorry if spelled incorrect. Just need to say it's the story of many people's lives but we have the poweer to change

  • Codine or not, Janis is goddess to me. I can live without drugs and alcohol and live a good life and still rock the marble halls.

  • She looks pretty in Polka Dot's no?

  • this is the story of my life!

  • That was okay in a truly god-like and spectacular sort of way...

  • udor1962 you got one hell of a taste in music...............you have done some of the best uploads on youtube.........my x girlfreind looks remarably like janis

  • is there any serious janis joplin fan that knows who the band is playing behind her in this song or where she sang this.

  • I'm listening, and sometimes the voice does not sound like Janis, and this is clearly a modern instrumental arrangement..

  • @peregrinatious and pokeyshellie - the vocals sound very typical of Janis's early recordings in Austin. My guess is that everything but the acoustic guitar was added recently.

  • "Don't mourn what I was, girl, mourn what I might have been"!!!!

This is so sad. Those shots of her as a baby and girl with her parents really got to me.

  • Janis Joplin validates my drug and alcohol dependency. I know it's not cool to be addicted but some people are.

  • @damongirl66 Don't waste your time babe on a dead end road.Janis,Brian,Jimi and so many others sucumbed. We must end cruelty ,in all it's guises, wherevever we come across it and there won't be a place for "codine".Don't worry bout the buzz, the music still sounds great .

  • @damongirl66 To each,their own,easy go,easy come. Rock on damongirl66

  • @damongirl66 "some people are" addicted? like some people are short or hazel-eyed or intelligent? no. wrong. it's not an uncontrollable state of being. it is possible, if one is careful and smart about it, to use drugs recreationally and not be dependent. your attitude is the unfortunate flipside of the AA mentality. we are NOT powerless. these are only drugs, we're stronger than they are.

  • @damongirl66 drugs, janis, dependancey, is all just thought, thought is suffering, realising the thoughts, letting them be part of the flow, is freedom....itt is just a constant flow of thoughts...with respect, keep at it kid, karl, lancs uk

  • Respond to this video... great......

  • @damongirl66 Drugs are fun for a few minutes, then you wake up and regret it all. I know. I hope maybe someday you and me both can find help. My problem is that most of my vices are legal and those are the most hardest ones to break. God bless ya and I hope all the best!! :) Janis is a God. Goddess. Whatever that word is to describe someone who held your hand through it all, smiled at you and silently said, "I know.".

  • @damongirl66 So you're aware that you have a problem, and you look to a talented woman who died tragically young 40 years ago to tell you it's ok? Find a good therapist and get your shit together. The 7 people who liked this, I don't even know what to say.

  • @damongirl66

Yep, I know what you're talking about there....

  • @damongirl66 Yes, there are lots of people that are, but you can get help before it's too late, like what happened to Janis. Please get help and stop. You can do it sweety. God bless.

  • @JoLeana76 Hey everyone, thanks for the so many unexpected responses, good and bad. What I meant by 'validates' is that the verses tell me it is not shameful to be an addict. I have been off hard drugs for 16 years but I am still an addict and always will be. Broskijohansson, you are a judgemental prick! Your holier-than-thou attirtude sucks and I would never ask you for help even for a papercut. Sheesh!

  • Just found a version of this by Sean & The Brandywines on the blogspot, Flower Bomb Songs.

  • am a massive janis fan and never heard this, and am frankly ashamed!!!! this is one of the best that i have heard!!!!! am excited! love janis, always think better is going to come along but it never does!!!!

  • @stevenlillie SAME HERE!! I've been a huge Janis fan for like 15 years and I thought I heard everything she recorded. I was shocked when I ran across this one. It is, in my opinion, one of the best songs she did. Hearing this reminds me why I fell in love with her music in the first place.

  • That was her breaking point with college. She had gotten straight and back to school. I can't imagine the hate and derision she put up with. When I was very young people in my school kept talking about her looks. I was talking about her music. I was one of about 6 people who had even heard of the Dead, so this WAS a long time ago. Looking back now as a grandma, she was beautiful!!! God, I wish she could have known that at least once in her life!

  • @MyMoppet52 I full-heartedlly agree! She was a beautiful and magnificent woman. I only wish I could have met her.

  • Janis was voted Ugliest Girl In School by the louts who engage in such awful cruelty.Today they are forgotten and Janis is a legend.

  • @problem49 i tought she was voted the ugliest boy in school??and yeah i agree ,where are those ppl now??she was only around for 27 yrs,but hell, did she make it worth while!!

  • @rawaiii You're right. The depth of their creativity only went as far as inventing the cruelest, most mean-spirited appellation their nasty little minds could contrive. The dregs of the frat house in full flower, and this probably constituted the most notable achievement of their miserable, insignificant lives .

  • @rawaiii Janis was in college in Texas, and they ran a poll in the College Newspaper for the Ugliest Man on Campus. Janis was the voted the Ugliest Man on Campus. Imagine how hurt she must have been. That's when she decided to hitchike to California with Chet Helms. There he had her sing with Big Brother and the Holding Co. The rest is history. :)

  • @PsychLion I think she was very beautiful. An amazing, talented, one-of-a-kind woman, that we will never see again in our lifetime.

  • @PsychLion Janis was beautiful, I love her <3

  • Her voice was so undamaged. A beautiful singer.

  • Wow.

  • Amazing... Vegas sounds interesting.. love to know more about what happened.

  • Prescience and genius.

  • thanks, exelente!!

  • If I was an actor and needed to cry for a scene it would be easy. I would just listen to any random Janis tune.

  • It 's 40 years ago now...bless you Janis, wherever you are...

  • she was so amazing!i wish so much this..Janis, please come back to Earth.i love her voice like nothing in my life.

  • superb tune rip janis ☮☮☮

  • unbelievably moving. literally brought tears to my eyes.

  • what A beautiful song janis was great blues singer !!! thanks fore this great posting

  • the instrumentals sound current, not current current but more current then the time she was in

  • @rachmcdon83 I agree this sounds like the vocals were done back then

and the music was dubbed in by her bandmates later maybe after she died ?

sort of like the Doors did with Morrison.

  • Down and dirty blues.

  • Dude! Great job on the video.

Janis was a shooting star: Burned so hot, so brightly but so briefly before ionizing into the cosmos. She leaves behind something buried deeply in the soul of everyone who ever heard her sing or watched her perform. I miss her. What a talent.

  • i saw janis in chicago in 1968. she was gone on booze and coke but it didn't matter. we were all gone on the war and the disintegration of America that is still happening today. we were living as much as we could in the moment and she stood still and faced her fate and felt it and told us all about it and it was beautiful. she ain't in hell she lives in us all.

  • never heard this one

  • If she had died in a car accident and had written a song called Lord Don"t You Buy Me a Mercedes Benz (for example) would you have written: "*P. S. Please NO Cars!* in relation to Janis in this and other texts..." You are absurd.. This song is about an opiate drug and her relationship to it. She loved Drugs, Sex and Rock and Roll. Who are you to censor others and pass judgment on what things fans should value. Janis is no Marie Osmond.

  • I love Janis but I never heard this before. Thanks for posting.

  • i love how only one homo said they didn't like this song. lol

  • My God...NO other rendition of "Codine" can ever touch this one!!!

  • Rock on Janis your the best

  • Absolutely AMAZING. She takes a great, CLASSIC Buffy Sainte-Marie song & not only makes it her "own" by adding more lines but somehow manages to make it more spooky & "American Gothic" all at the same time. Just another example of her talent. Thank you for posting this. I have been a longtime fan of hers yet have never heard this before! Wonderful.

  • A man never forgets his first love....

  • I didn't knew this fantastic song!! Thanx for posting!

  • CLASSIC! So many great cover versions of this song! The Byrds, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Donovan, The Charlatans, Janis Joplin, Gram Parsons...Doesn't get much better!

    markwilliamwales.blogspot

  • it is so hard no more to listen today a good musician in relation to janis .... & this since 40 years ... i have no drugs , have no need drugs ... p & l more i have no & a bad english i have also ;-)

  • @udor1962 I think you so RIGHT! Janis was the best! Ela foi o que nunca mais alguém conseguirá alcançar!

  • @udor1962 this is what I think. I never used drugs, never wanted too and also think that all good music barely ended on 1969 and died progressively until 1975. All we have here is noise and commercial crap. The sixties was an explosion of culture, art, music and a revolution of society. We are all suffering from apathy today.

  • @HairyPotter2012 I fully agree with every your word!

  • god, i love janis joplin

    love her so much

AND buffy, they are both in my top three favorite female singers of all time.

    i can't tell which i love more.

buffy's is very raw...with the simple guitar and nothing else but her voice makes it chilling.

    but of course janis joplin

    god janis joplin!

    both beautiful

    can't compare

  • @lonelysingingdoll They're both just shattering. I never heard this version before -- takes the breath away for sure. Thanks mucho for the posting, udor 1962.

  • overdoes was it i cant remember, one of the most formidable artists of her generation and will never be forgotten , EVER

  • was it bad heroin or too much heroin.

  • @lovesGenet The heroin was too pure and she took too much of it.

  • Amazing. She captured the way I feel about my life sometimes.

  • Thanks for this beautiful song!!!!!!!

  • Buffy St. Marie's original version is just ok, but personally I prefer Janis's. The lyrics change to it that she made and of course her searing voice (love that natural tremolo of hers too) is what makes it so wonderful and kinda blows Buffy's out of the water if you ask me : )

  • @WavyGravy22 I prefer Buffy's.

  • Hey fluxstringer ya defeatist, they might have the guns but we got the numbers! Rust never sleeps man! We will prevail.

  • Is this really from 1965??!! I love it!

  • Breathtaking Janis...

  • I love her unembellished expression. Beautiful!

  • Words can't express the talent of this woman enough. She was amazing. Her singings makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Always a good sign. Anyone who's self-destruct button has already been pushed within themselves just makes it to death quicker by throwing drugs into the mix. Some people are lucky to escape unscath and come out the other side, unfortunately for Janis that wasn't the case.

  • janis la mejor cantante que he escuchado ,sin duda...............

  • man shes without a doubt my absolute favorite female singer, a timeless legend. this is a prime example of the saying "the good die young" RIP JJ

  • just found out James Gurley died last december, heart attack. Thought you might not know

  • amazing!!!! thank you! 10*

  • She leaves me breathless, I swear.

  • it was so - janis was in drugs - sorry , have only in this video bring reality in my best what i have today - we are livin in a way to god " have janis say" ... ok ? lets drink peace & love ... tnx

  • @udor1962 I can;t find this copy anywhere-could you tell me where i can get this song.

  • rest in peace james!

  • @nothinglikeafender

rest in peace was no the dream of janis - revolution was the dream against war ( to this time war in vietnam special )

no a chance for peace worldwide - this was the dead for janis, jimi h , jim m. a.s.o. to this time - we are today no a little tap go in better future - we need old songs for a better world & need also new strategy against world wide imperialism ... p & l & hope you understand ...

  • Comment removed

  • That's a piss poor attitude. If you were truly revolutionary you would know such a project takes the hearts and minds of a region, nation, world - the young, the old, the rich and the poor. Giving up is letting the system win.

  • Comment removed

  • Being of the 'new' generation, I would like to think that old schoolers like you could offer us your advice and stories. Not withdraw from the fight.

  • Comment removed

  • They got the guns, they got the numbers.

Watch the Kent State Videos, they thought the system would not kill them. Do the Gandhi thing?

Passive resistance? Ask 'em about how well that worked at Tienemen Square. Advice? Stories? listen to the Beatles Revolution ! Lennon sang " Well you know

You better free your mind instead "

  • I don't know how I could have not heard this for so many years, but I'm glad I finally have the privilege. What an amazing song, amazing voice, amazing soul.

  • @DonaldRumsfailed Who'da thunk? @_@

  • RIp James and Janis. Janis was always at her best with Big Brother.

  • Imagine the reunion! May they find the peace they never found here on earth! Janis~your voice still stirs my souls and always will!

  • RIP JANIS

    RIP James Gurley

  • Do you have the rest of it? Could you upload 'Goin' Down to Frisco'?

  • Oh, this is amazing!

I'm a fourteen year old who has no greater joy than singing the blues, and Janis is my greatest inspiration.

  • un-effing-believable! thank you for sharing this on You Tube! I have been such a huge fan of Janis for so long, and I've NEVER heard this before and I can't even speak right now. It's been years since I've heard "new" Janis material, and I just got the FIX of a lifetime! Janis never ceases to amaze me. I love you Janis....xo

  • Janis' voice never can be replaced by any other of the new 'rockstars'.

  • It's been very influential and emulated by singers like Nina Hagen and Diamanda Galas in their own way.

  • Hippies Never Die!

    (L)

  • Awesome!

  • too bad there never was a duet album of Buffy and Janis

  • O sweet Janis how ur voice touches my soul!!!

  • beautiful!! and thats it !

  • I knew this song when sung by Buffy Sainte-Marie, but when I learned that Janis did a rendition of it, I could not think of a more fitting performer to take a stab at it. She sings her heart out and God bless her for it! Thank you udor1962 for allowing me my first listen to this gem!

  • Does anyone know if she wrote this song or where did it come from?

  • Cod'ine is originally a Buffy Sainte-Marie song, but Janis' lyrics are very different. She pretty much re-wrote the song and reworked the tune a little.

There's only a short live clip of Buffy singing her version and I'm trying to get the full song up here. It's incredible, everyone should hear it!

  • There will never be another Janis! I wish I could have met her. I love the way she sings even though alot of people don't like it. I don't care what anyone thinks Janis rocks!

  • What a terrific version of this song!

  • Thanks for posting, this gem. 5*****!!

  • thank you thank you thank you (kneeling and bowing) i needed this

  • It certainly felt like ball and chain, 'cause you represented and died for what we felt so, so, strongly about: that something was really wrong in a world where money rules over compassion and feelings. RIP, Janis. See ya

  • ooooooooooh

thank you God I'm alive to listen to this song sung by her...

  • WOW! I'm grateful to God too that people like you should undersatnd what it's all about! H& K from Nanny ,your soul mate

  • eu amo a voz desta mulher

    janis forever

  • Does anyone know where I can find this to download?????

  • Bigmama Booch huh?

I got a dog named Layla but I call her Boochie

    Booch Pooch

but I call her booch more than anything

maybe there is a subconcious Janis connection?

    life is a trip, man

  • totally...theres a little Janis in all of us. Booch is my nickname....cause I looked like John Belushi when I was born, Papa called me Booch my whole life. LOL

  • U-N-I-Q-U-E!!! Janis just ROCKS!

  • wow. just wow

    this is all too sad

  • What album or collection is this off of? Is it a bootleg?

  • It is no a bootleg and no a collection - the first records of Janis are this !

  • Awesome! Is this record still available? I cannot find it...

  • This was an audition tape, but later other instruments were added to give the tracks a "studio feel" ---at least from what I read. It's on also on the bootleg "Blow All My Blues Away".

  • Yeah, it's a bootleg called This is Janis Joplin 1965

  • 6/8 time

  • Unforgettable Janice. Thank you. I also want to thank rebel for sharing.
