@heine71 yeah just like Chuck from happy days who was a member of the family..suddenly disappeared and didn't exist anymore...the same thing happened on family matters where they had 2 daughters and one son...but after a few seasons they only had one daughter and one son
I think Chuck went to the military. he was probably still missing in action and presumed dead at this point. The reunion movie would be Fonzie, Ralph and Richie going to search for him after getting word 20 years later that he may be alive.
i think when mork was traveling back and forth thru time, he caused a tear in the time/space contiuim and as a result chuck was whisked away to a alternate universe as a texas ranger named walker
Howard says "we've had the pleasure of raising two wonderful children." Two??? What about Chuck? Was he not a wonderful child like Richie and Joanie? Or was Howard such a horrible father that he forgot about his own first child?
every now and then , there comes along a tv show that truely captures the heart and immagination of the public, happy days was one of them,a great show and one that will last forever
Interesting to see Joanie and Chachi together from the 1977-78 season. To her, Chachi was a little jerk and she didn't want anything to do with him. But they did begin to warm up a little the next year. Also, they showed Potsie singing to Joanie, which led to her er...stalking? him. But being the person she was, he let her down easy.
Back in the day, there was only two guys that had my heart... Michael Jackson & Scott Baio. OMG, Chachi was so cute. I used to wear a red bandana around my thigh just like him.
you know i did always like this show. it was not that bad. the only thing that i think is, it would not have been such a great show, if, it was not for tom bosley. in my opinion. if they did not have such a character as Mr. C. then this show would not have ever made it as long as it did.
@mallyrose87 The series didn't jump the shark when Fonzie did - it started going downhill when it turned into a feathered hair fest around 1980. Then again, not every TV show can be like Mad Men with its sense of historical accuracy.
@MadameLil I agree. The same thing happened around the same time with "Little House on the Prairie". You would see a lot of the young actors on that show sporting the Farrah shags, hmmm...even though the show took place in the late 1800s. Either lazy hair dressers, actors not wanting to cut their hair for period appropriate hair styles, or no money for wigs....who knows??
Oh shit Tom Bosley died? Too bad I was only a kid when this show ended and could only appreciate the re-runs but that final episode was definelty a tear jerker. I think all shows that are around that long make their audience cry. One thing it makes you realize is how old you got growing up on the show.
And now as remember the legendary Tom Bosley for his 11 fun filled years as Mr.C on Happy Days. We not only remember him for that show but he also did Murder She Wrote & Father Dowling Mysteries. So long Mr. Bosley and thanks for being part of our happy lives on Happy Days. Ayyy, R.I.P. Tom Bosley 1927-2010 : ( ...
Made account just so I could post today. Sad to hear about Tom. Cried as I remembered right away Howard's toast at the end of the finale. For my generation this moment will be one that we will always think of when we think of Tom. Remembering his real-life tears, him turning to look at the cameras, us feeling like he was speaking directly to us. I went online when I heard, hoping I could find the heart warming scene. Tears again as I re-watched ;(
The Cuninghams were amazing parents, ones we all hope for. They never abused their kids nor hit them in any way. They taught by loving example and unconditonal love no matter what their kids pursued, they always loved them and accepted them in their home. I always thought of Fonzie as their new thrid child. I loved this show along with Laverne And Shirley. The good days of TV.
@Nadleh What does that possibly have to do with my comment on them? Of course they got paid but, they did everything they did from their hearts and people, well most people can tell that. Also, there are parents out there like them who teach from example, who love their kids and who never ever hit them. For goodness sake, celebrate life instead of making cynical commentary.
@Nadleh few people get to be paid to do something they are passionate about. I get paid to drive a truck, and wake every morning honorted to be trusted with that responsability. These people lived as these characters for 10 years, and sacrificed mightlily to entertain US. I truly hope that one day you find something you are passionate about and are lucky enough to get paid to do it.. till then you will continue to denigrate those who are lucky enough to have this honor.
@Diane12163 "Amazing" is the word for it---so amazing, in fact, that they were able to completely wipe clean from the [collective] memory banks- of all their family & friends- the very existence of their eldest son, Chuck
@kiiifute1 The production team and directorial team realised that Chuck wasn't working out. Everyone seemed to warm to Richie and Joannie so they got left in and Chuck got written out. It is just how the TV machine runs.
@Diane12163 My grandparents were the Cuninghams. They were also like The Bunkers, lol! They raised me and I always felt that that were my parents as well. Today is mothers day and it has been five years since my grandmother died. May God Bless mothers everywhere!
This is what was good of Television. It is sad that this show had to end. And it is so very sad to have lost Tom. God Bless him and thanks to him all of us who had no fathers had that figure at least once a week. As is this show, Tom will always be remmebered. Thanks for the memories.
I wonder if this generation will be so affected by a current sitcom today like we were back then? - One of the greatest shows on television - Thanks for the memories!
I have seen this episode so many times but it still makes me tear up. Its crazy 2 think I wasn't born till 3 yrs after this show ended lol yet I have seen every episode. I wish they still made shows like this today nowadays all the shows r so stupid and over the top.
@vccstudents lol I always wondered what happened to Donnas sister from that 70s show! Maybe her. Chuck, tiger from the brady bunch r all somewhere together lmao..
@cassielynnejo And along the way, they kidnapped Judy from Family Matters and the first Chris from the Partridge Family. Also, the first Darrin from Bewitched came along to help.
I think it's so damn wonderful that Ron Howard came back, not once, but twice, to help out a series that he originally starred in! He saluted his roots, per se! A lot of people, once they're famous doing other things, never come back to their origin and give thanks. He did this here twice and at least once for an Andy Griffith Show reunion movie, as well as countless cast get-togethers. No matter how good or successful his movies are, the guy - like Henry Winkler - will always remain cool!
The writers figured that Fonzie was filling the big brother role to Richie and that it was a mistake to have the Chuck charcter in the first place. So Chuck dropped out of existance. It had nothing to do with Chachi.
@Superbatfan I didn't mean to imply that Chachi replaced Chuck. Just that it was sutpid to write in Chachi. I couldn't stand him. His character ruined the show.
Chuck got sent to Vietnam, was captured, tortured & left for dead. He was disfgured so badly he returned to the states with a new last name...... Norris!!!
@msymsed I read on Wikipedia that there's a blooper where right after Tom Bosely made the toast, he said, as he was sipping his champagne, "Wait a minute. Where's Chuck?"
If I recall correctly, the storyline said something about richies and lori beths plane coming in late, as they had to fly in to attend. So i assume that they didnt have time to change before the wedding. Had to rush in right from the airport
During mr. C's toat , in the last episode, he says "we've raised two kids" but i remember that there was an older brother in the first episode who went off to college.
If you consider the year this finale aired, 1984, was also the year that Michael Jackson's hair was caught on fire while filming a Pepsi commercial and won 8 Grammys for Thriller.
I checked and this aired on Tuesday, May 8, 1984 as a 2-part show. However, there were several more new episodes that aired in the summer of 1984 so it wasn't quite the last episode. The series first aired in January 1974.
Yeah, I watched those summer episodes, but to me this episode was the "final" episode. It was kind of bittersweet to watch those additional episodes over the summer because one knew that when the new television season came in September, Happy Days was not going to be part of the line up.
I remember watching this final episode of Happy Days when it originally aired in 1984 . As much as I couldnt stand it after its "jump the shark" moments, I still watched it faithfully & this final episode plus Howards toast, made up for all the "jump the shark" moments IMO. After this episode aired, its final one, I thought, "Wow. Its really over. No more Happy Days". As I watched the end credits roll, I knew right then and there that I was going to miss Happy Days. 25 years later, I still do.
Happy Days started going downhill after the first season - ever since they began performing in front of a live audience. It turned into this sappy crap where many fo the episodes had to have this heavy drama with a serious message or statement. I understand that they couldn't have Richie, Potsie, and Ralph in High School forever, but they could have had some decent episodes/story lines surrounding their
Actually, they didnt go to filming in front of a live audience until one single episode in the second season (Fonzie's Getting Married). The episode was such a ratings hit, that they went with a live audience permanently in the 3rd season. Thats when the downhill slide began, IMO.
It's a classic, especially at the 2:19 time moment when "Howard" looks into the camera, breaking from his tv character to express REAL emotion. Heart-felt, something that is VERY lacking in TODAY's generation: originality
Ok where was Chuck, Postie, Ralph, Leather, Pinky, and Arnold for the wedding what the F_ck.

Man the "Memories" song sucks even more than that last season theme song.

are you dissing the King's music?
webmasterd 2 years ago
I like much of the King's music...
not this song. It sucks.
Hey I love the Beatles, but think "I am the Walrus" sucks ass as well.

@TejMulen
If I recall correctly, the storyline said something about richies and lori beths plane coming in late, as they had to fly in to attend. So i assume that they didnt have time to change before the wedding. Had to rush in right from the airport

Ritchie was half bald in this, look at him. No way the series could have continued another 2 years, unless he shaved his head and became a skinhead.

Who was the shmuk that played Chuck?

Chuck was played by Gavan O'Herlihy and Randolph Roberts but I don't know who played him first.

does anyone know why Ralph and Potsy werent in the final episode?
kcroyalfanatic 2 years ago
That never made sense to me, either. Surely Donny and Anson could have made time to appear. Their schedules couldn't have been THAT crammed.
RoyFive 2 years ago
probably had to do with politics again. maybe holding out for more money, etc.
webmasterd 2 years ago
More than likely. So what's new.
RoyFive 2 years ago
During mr. C's toat , in the last episode, he says "we've raised two kids" but i remember that there was an older brother in the first episode who went off to college.
doom4445 2 years ago
They had another son, but he was written out in the 2nd season. The writers forgot about the 3rd Cunningham child.
tunapup12 2 years ago 7
Seems like the characters did, too. Same way the Douglases (and writers) forgot about Mike and Bub in the later years of My Three Sons.

just like they forgot about the first one..aka....chuck

Really strange that in the last episode, they didn't have Potsie or Ralph.

RJY4356 2 years ago
Yeah, I watched those summer episodes, but to me this episode was the "final" episode. It was kind of bittersweet to watch those additional episodes over the summer because one knew that when the new television season came in September, Happy Days was not going to be part of the line up.

excellent series. A shame they cant make them like this anymore

I love that little moment where Tom Bosley stepped out of character and saluted the audience.

Happy Days started going downhill after the first season - ever since they began performing in front of a live audience. It turned into this sappy crap where many fo the episodes had to have this heavy drama with a serious message or statement. I understand that they couldn't have Richie, Potsie, and Ralph in High School forever, but they could have had some decent episodes/story lines surrounding their
dhucke4assembly 2 years ago
Actually, they didnt go to filming in front of a live audience until one single episode in the second season (Fonzie's Getting Married). The episode was such a ratings hit, that they went with a live audience permanently in the 3rd season. Thats when the downhill slide began, IMO.

Interesting that you should mention "Jump the Shark" since Happy Days was the series that actually started it.
And the final "Jump the Shark" moment of the series happened right at the end when Tom Bosley broke the "Fourth Wall" by speaking to the audience.
BuckWilliams17 2 years ago
It's a classic, especially at the 2:19 time moment when "Howard" looks into the camera, breaking from his tv character to express REAL emotion. Heart-felt, something that is VERY lacking in TODAY's generation: originality

Happy Days went down a slippery slope from the moment the Fonz jumped the shark!!!!!!
