If you have another explanation, please tell me. This is one of my favorite movies and I still don't fully understand everything about it. Maybe the 1st comment I made wasn't the WHOLE point of the movie, but is is crucial to his final decision.

All I can tell you is that it is about a paranoid schizophrenic who starts to see strange things after he stops taking his medication. It goes way beyond that however and I highly recommend that you at least rent it. Donnie Darko truly is one of the most innovative and interesting movies of this decade.
