Go look at the actual job loss report. 17 (.1 I believe)% unemployment, which is almost at the high of 17.4% which was reported in October. Now I'd love you to tell me how when both of the jobless numbers go up, it means it's good for the economy.
Its a fact though. As previously unemployed people return to the job search amidst the news that places are hiring again, reported unemployment WILL go up.
Either that, or America saw a massive population increase in the past month. As much as you want to 'explain away' the best jobs report we've seen in four years, that just isn't happening.

You can't have both ways, because the number of people that gave up would go down, while the number of people looking for work would go up. First being people looking for work, out in the market, the second is people that have given up/settled for a part time job, but want to work full time. That number is 17.1%, while the first is around 10%. Not only that, but investors know that there was a bump in jobs, because of the mass hirings with the census, which aren't longterm. So if you have the number still going up, even with the census, it doesn't look good.
You're ignoring the fact that the jobs reports segregate private sector job gains from government jobs. The number of jobs gained in just the private sector is 290,000.

Stocks were cheap, S&P 500 stocks, almost a third fell by 5%, along with the awesome job numbers, the bulls should have been in there buying everything up. However again, the market drops almost 140. If you talk to investors, or economists, that don't have something to gain by agreeing with Obama, they'll say that the numbers are a little fuzzy, because they'll contradict eachother.
Considering all the panic going on about Greece, and the 1000 point P&G snafu, it would be pretty impossible for any jobs report to overturn the huge losses generated by those events. Positive jobs reports in past months have caused large measurable jumps in the market, and in all likelyhood this months jobs report softened yesterday's blow, as it was the only good news to come out. Even the Wall Street Journal isn't denying it.

Stock performance isn't connected to company performance, just the common perception of company performance, which is a big difference. You're being selective with data and you know it. Can you or the wall street journal which of Obama's economic policies at the time caused the decline. Anyone with common sense would look at the markets and recognized that decline as the continued effects of the housing and banking market implosions, which formulated under the Bush administration. So why is Fox wrong for airing Michael Brown's beliefs about how the oil leak was started? Just because Fox allowed an interview it doesn't mean they support his conspiracy theory... they just aren't subjected to your gov't control of the media such as with MSNBC and the NBC affiliates are.

Gibbs was actually gentle with Fox News, who are propagators of amazing falsehoods in their continuing function as GOP-TV, propaganda organ of the modern Insane Republican Party. Fox "News" is a major misnomer - news and journalism have almost nothing to do with that network. @11111110 Guess what, the jobless numbers are up to 9.9%. And don't give me the crap that, more people are entering the job market, so that made the unemployment go up. Go look at the actual job loss report. 17 (.1 I believe)% unemployment, which is almost at the high of 17.4% which was reported in October. Now I'd love you to tell me how when both of the jobless numbers go up, it means it's good for the economy.

Its a fact though. As previously unemployed people return to the job search amidst the news that places are hiring again, reported unemployment WILL go up.
Either that, or America saw a massive population increase in the past month. As much as you want to 'explain away' the best jobs report we've seen in four years, that just isn't happening.

@11111110 Explain how then the number of people that have given up looking for jobs/taken part time jobs is up to 17.1%, and the people looking for work is up to 9.9%. You can't have both ways, because the number of people that gave up would go down, while the number of people looking for work would go up. Now you have both numbers going up, which translates into a higher jobless number. I trade the markets, and believe me, the higher unemployment number hurt the market yesterday.

I'm pretty sure it was the volatility of the European market and the shock over the 1000 point computer glitch that caused the markets to have a bad day yesterday. Not the unambiguously positive job report.
Either way you're presenting fuzzy math. You've compared the 9;9% unemployment number to last month's, citing an increase, while at the same time selectively comparing the 17.1% figure to that of October's. Not noting the fact that the two groups aren't mutually exclusive.

@11111110 What they believe is a computer glitch. First, it was fat fingers, now it's a computer glitch. Regardless whatever it was, the market is based on volume, and that sale of P&G was not the sole reason of the almost 1,000 point drop, it was job numbers, Greece (along with if Greece falls, most likely Portugal and Spain will fall next). And if you notice what I said, it is approaching the high of 17.4% which was reported in October, because if I was comparing them, that would mean it fell.

@11111110 ok, if you look at the jobless numbers you have two. First being people looking for work, out in the market, the second is people that have given up/settled for a part time job, but want to work full time. That number is 17.1%, while the first is around 10%. Not only that, but investors know that there was a bump in jobs, because of the mass hirings with the census, which aren't longterm. So if you have the number still going up, even with the census, it doesn't look good.

You're ignoring the fact that the jobs reports segregate private sector job gains from government jobs. The number of jobs gained in just the private sector is 290,000.

The fallacy I was referring to was your claim reprinted here. It is a mistake to use the DOW to prove anything, one way or another. The vagaries and parameters that affect the stock market make any argument using statistics from this source fallacious.

@11111110 If your logic was correct, the stock market should have been way up yesterday. Stocks were cheap, S&P 500 stocks, almost a third fell by 5%, along with the awesome job numbers, the bulls should have been in there buying everything up. However again, the market drops almost 140. If you talk to investors, or economists, that don't have something to gain by agreeing with Obama, they'll say that the numbers are a little fuzzy, because they'll contradict eachother.

Considering all the panic going on about Greece, and the 1000 point P&G snafu, it would be pretty impossible for any jobs report to overturn the huge losses generated by those events. Positive jobs reports in past months have caused large measurable jumps in the market, and in all likelyhood this months jobs report softened yesterday's blow, as it was the only good news to come out. Even the Wall Street Journal isn't denying it.

@11111110 But to understand investors, we want to invest in companies that are growing, and if they aren't going to higher, we don't want to invest (unless the company is bloated and is cutting people. Less overhead) Now I'll agree, Greece, and the previous low was a problem, however, investors don't look at the low, they look at the close, and the close was much higher than the low of a thousand. Now I personally, and the guys I trade with went in buying, getting good deals

@11111110 As most people did, expecting good returns as the stocks that can turn a profit took a hit, which leaves room for a huge profit. Sure the shakey investors got out, but thats not the majority of the market. But again, it went down, and it wasn't just the plunge (because the NYSE said it might have just been a malfuction). It was a combo. Greece, previous day and bad job numbers. Remember the unemployment wasn't supposed to go above 8%. The administration is trying to cover themselves.

I think you're giving the rationality of investors more credit then they're due. Stock performance isn't connected to company performance, just the common perception of company performance, which is a big difference. Although you'd be wrong to cite an unemployment number exceeding 8% as a new, startling development, as its been over 8% for a year now.
Though I agree with you on your last remark, the administration is trying to cover for job losses by...spawning job growth.

As 2009 opened, three weeks before Barack Obama took office, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 9034 on January 2, its highest level since the autumn panic. Yesterday the Dow fell another 4.24% to 6763, for an overall decline of 25% in two months and to its lowest level since 1997. The dismaying message here is that President Obama's policies have become part of the economy's problem.

You're being selective with data and you know it. Can you or the wall street journal which of Obama's economic policies at the time caused the decline. Anyone with common sense would look at the markets and recognized that decline as the continued effects of the housing and banking market implosions, which formulated under the Bush administration. But I would sincerely like to know how Obama's economic policies could cause the Dow to decline and then surge for the next year.

Although unemployment is not a measure of unemployed Americans, but of the number of Americans who are looking for work and failing to find it. Any economist could tell you this. There were substantial job gains in the past couple months, so naturally more and more unemployed Americans are resuming the job hunt amid the good news. This past month specifically, 300,000 private sector jobs were created, the biggest surge in job growth seen in the past four years.

So why is Fox wrong for airing Michael Brown's beliefs about how the oil leak was started? Just because Fox allowed an interview it doesn't mean they support his conspiracy theory... they just aren't subjected to your gov't control of the media such as with MSNBC and the NBC affiliates are.
I don't agree with Michael Brown though. I think the oil spill was just a mishap but I do believe Obama used the mishap to stop any further oil drilling in America.
