Obfuscation - if you want to call it this - can serve to stimulate. Just because a lack of vision/purpose is attributed to a piece, it doesn't follow that the piece isn't generated by a human psyche and has something to say. I think it's petty and unimaginative to feel as though one has somehow been "cheated" out of any thoughts derived from a piece that the reader/listener interprets as not being driven by a necessity beyond simply wanting to express themselves.
The world has actually NOT become more grim, oddly enough. By every rational measure, there is less suffering and confusion. But the suffering that does exist is perhaps more visible, and as we learn more we become more aware of how much we don't know. Cosmopolitanism and technology definitely create alienation. You might fall on a thorn because of that, but you should have better things to do than thorn-falling.
