He knew that if he was to continue living, his life would be undergoing constant combat because he could never feel really happy again (because heroin fucks up that part of ones brain) He shouldn't have gotten on that shit...

Drugs make people realize that they can feel amazing, normal or happy (esp if they are in constant pain, psychic or physical), even if the backlash of coming down is hell that amazing feeling is worth going through that hell again and again. Just like the saying 'love hurts', people still go back. Imagine knowing you could never fall in love again, that is what becoming sober feels like to someone who (even for a few precious moments of relief) will never use again.
That part and right after just creeps me out... I wonder sometimes if I lost my true love... course it's been years.... I JUST DOn'T WANT TO END UP AN OLD MISERABLE LONELY MAN.

Everyone knows Elliott did a lot of speed and when you stab yourself in the stomach, you want to die. It is not like taking pills. @janisdawnjohnson No matter how sacred your cow is, there are plenty of perfectly sane and decent people out there who it just doesn't appeal to. A lot of music has clarity and depth of emotion... I imagine some of it is stuff you don't like.
I feel like this is a special gem of a song that has it's place outside of an album. It has a feel to it that doesn't exist anywhere else and is maybe more telling than he wanted on CD. Truly beautiful and poetic.
