George is over-rated. He wrote 3 good Beatles songs and the rest stink. The Indian stuff is awful. Paul told him what to play on almost every Beatles song and sometimes did it himself because George could not play it. He has only one song on Pepper- which is crap- because John and Paul rejected his other song.
@bluebeatlesboy Just take a look at "All things must pass" or listen to it and you'll realise how what you say is wrong. George was a wonderful songwriter!!! Perhaps Paul told him what to play on some songs but George did a great job on many of the other, Till there was you for example.
@bluebeatlesboy 'Within you and Without you' was the best song on that album. It is obvious you lack the intellect to understand or appreciate its message.

I even named one of my cats George Harrison,Sir Albert is the other cats name.
@clifbuel - I like George...but please let's not embellish him beyond his talents (which seems to be happening a lot these days by the music industry). In some ways, Rubber Soul was George's major triumph with The Beatles because his songs, Think for yourself and If I needed someone, are arguably the best on the album (with McCartney's Drive my car and Lennon's Norwegian Wood being his main rivals). His contributions on Revolver (Taxman, Love you to, and I want to tell you) are no less good but with more competition, in numbers of solid songs at least, from Lennon and McCartney this time. Blue Jay Way was great but on a faultless (and
@angellurest ? So everything the Beatles did was gold? Untouchable? I've read somewhere that the beatles themselves though some songs of the White Album were sub-par, and Lennon was very critical of McCartney's and even his own stuff.
From the time I was a little tyke listening to my brother's Beatles singles in 1964, to buying their albums near the end, I have had a George Harrison bias. "WMG Gently Weeps" & "Taxman" are more relevant today than ever. "Here Comes The Sun" is a masterpiece of art that is eternal. "Something" is the greatest love song ever made. Post-Beatles, George slayed me with "What Is Life" and more from All Things Must Pass, and even into the late '70s & 80s the Dark Horse put out music that reached me.
@tauntingfrenchman1 You're not rude :D Yes, that's what I mean. I always confuse the name with the other Beatles song , but I prefer the one in which George sings
@albuorkka its ok i mix names u too but yea, he sings great on that song, and also do you want to know a secret, the only other lennon/mccartney song he sang
I agree that he's totally underappreciated. I appreciate the fact that George was an excellent songwriter, but also simultaneously playful and spiritual. The perfect combination! Anyway, I think I'd rank the Beatles (in terms of chillness) as follows: George, John, Ringo, Paul. Paul is at the bottom because I really don't appreciate how he turned on the rest of them at the end. That seems pretty low to me.
Definetly should not be an underated Beatle- personal faves- 1st tied George and Paul then Ringo and then John. Only reason John low down is he was so angry and bitter and I just on't like that- it grates......
3. Should they have stayed together longer, time would came, when he would wrote about the 40% of the songs alone. I think the last 2-3 albums clearly shows that Gerorge had a huge impact on them. Needless to say, the the best ones.
(4. Such a pity that Patti looks the bitchiest among the Beatle wives in the Something video. Yeah, I am jealous:))
1. He's definetely not underrated by me, is my favourite Beatle.
2. His songs are much deeper and more meaningful and gentle than the "leading" Beatles songs written by P. and J. It's just you need to write hits for the mass and the 2 of them delivered that very well... and the girls went wild. Meantime, George wrote all his songs beacuse he really wanted to tell something with them.
interesting trivia......the song think for yourself is very unusual in the regard that there is two entirely different bass guitar melodies going at the same time......the obvious fuzz, distorted bass line and a subtle standard bass going in the background. That may be a rock and roll first of its kind
WOW WOW WOW; YEAH YEAH YEAH.What a mind opener that was. i always thought George did the background vocals. this was great harmony. How did they do it?
@fangsUPxx yeah these are all him singing. haha when i first got into them i couldn't tell the difference but now i can tell each of their voices apart as well as who is who. lol but i kinda don't blame you sometimes he does sound like john lennon..
It's telling that George is the ONLY Beatle that gets this kind of SPIN or DAMAGE CONTROL. You'll never find anyone saying John Lennon was "underrated" or that Paul was "unappreciated". Only Harrison's fans do this. It's kind of sad. In your attempt to glorify him, you make George a pathetic figure.
I have no problem with George or Ringo, but John and Paul were definitely better songwriters than George, and Ringo had virtually no part in the writing of songs (besides the drumming)... The reason George turned out to be such a great songwriter as well was probably a result of being around John and Paul. They were all great, but john and paul were truly incredible, which is why they created a shadow over the george and ringo
mellamosean, John & Paul underrated the songs of George, he got a lot of songs that would have been great to hear in The Beatles (All Things Must Pass, Not Guilty, Hear Me Lord), Ringo also tried to write songs, and his songs are great, but for example, Don't Pass Me By seems that it was wrote in early 1964, and it wasn't recorded until 1968.
They may have underrated George's songs, but it was probably because in the beginning he didn't show strong songwriting ability. In the end, he did manage to write some songs on par with the greats written by john and paul, but not nearly as consistently. And I can't say "Don't Pass Me By" would make it into my top 70 beatles songs. Imagine if Ringo and George were the primary songwriters... they wouldn't be seen as the same band... not even close.
I think people shouldn't forget the roles each of the members played. Ringo's role in choosing drum beats may have had a very key role in the popularity of the songs. That is very hard to assess; I think he was a good drummer for them but not vital to their success. I think George Harrison's style of guitar playing was good for the band, and his songs got better and better, but I don't think any of it was vital to the success of the band.
Now John and Paul had very similar roles in the band. They were the main songwriters and lead singers of the band, and had pretty comparable worth to the bands success IMO. That's based on what actually happened...
Of course we can speculate, if they had incorporated George (& maybe Ringo) into the writing process more, we would have seen more results from George (& Ringo). From what I know, John & Paul would help each other, but usually left George on his own...
I don't understand how he was so underrated... in my opinion he had the most poetic & sweetest voice of the whole band, every song i hear from george I feel the emotion coming through it, every song he sang had a warmness or sadness about it, its truely amazing & very spiritual.
GEEEEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOOORGEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EL MEJOR BEATLE.......!!!!!!!!!!!! piggies is the song for Orwell's book, Revolution in the farm, don't you think?
George had some great songs, especially Taxman, Savoy Truffle, It's All Too Much, and Here Comes the Sun. Definitely underrated. Oh yeah, and While My Guitar Gently Weeps.
i can assure you guys geroge is getting less underrated everyday. in my opinion and im sure a lot of other people think this too that none of the beatles are underrated
i think alot of people like his songs but just think john or paul wrote the song they liked. His voice is a mixture of john and pauls voice, so it gets confusing lol
I think he had the best solo career, well look at it this way, he kept getting better and better whilst John and Paul never repeated the same greatness shown in The Beatles.
Dam good work man, some of these songs i didnt even know but are really nice. George is def. un appreciated also as a person, he's a very humble and peaceful man.
I like the song "All Things Must Pass" and the demo he did in 1969. I wish John and Paul would had taken interest in this tune then. Its like they were trying not to let George really make a song like he wanted to. I wish Capitol would remaster his 1975 solo album "Extra Texture"!
Thank you for this nice presentation and selection some of which are George less known songs like "it's all too much" which I found nicely heavy and refreshingly modern now (hear at 6'40").
I agree George is my favorite because he was first of all the Beatle's lead guitar and somehow had all of the pressure of heavy weights from that era with heroes like Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton etc.. and he managed to keep the band on top. But I always suspected a painful refrain from too heavy!
i was 12 when i saw hard days night in 64 and george was the coolest beatle and ive followed him ever since i thinall things must pass proved to john what an ass he was for letting george have two or so songs on every albm i think he was jealous but george was a very spirituall man and he inspired me to turn to jesus not as god but for the great love he had for mankind and krishna and still get a kick out of sinatra crediting paul and john for something and that song was voted the best
I'm a big George Harrison fan. I think he is appreciated. What he wrote was great, but the amount of great stuff doesn't compare to Paul and John. Really think about it, the amount of McCartney-Lennon songs.
He released a triple album after the band broke up and a a part of the songs were songs refused by Paul and John. He wrote a lot more songs that people think, they just weren't released as Beatles songs....
i couldnt agree more george harrison was the quiet one in the beatles but without him the beatles wouldnt have evolved the way they did he was a key component in the group
wow! this is a very compelling argument. "Think for yourself" has always been one of my favorites... George isn't underestimated, he was considered to be the best musician when they started out, and he had the most serious commitment to the band. He had everything to lose and everything to gain (and he gained everything he could)
George's best songs!!! No one can love them as much as me!!! Please check out and comment on my reworking of George's demo of "Window Window". I tried to do him justice adding two acoustics, drums, bass, three electrics, strings, piano, and organ in my home studio (kinda my personal Free As A Bird). Love ya George!!
George was definately the completely underrated Beatle. And that people sometimes forget his name. I noticed that as I asked when I was in school about people naming all four Beatles. They get John, Paul, & Ringo right but George they forget it seems. Like he wasn't there. John & Paul were the leaders of the Beatles while Ringo and George hung in the background it seems.
Harrison was an amazing talent who, perhaps unfortunately for him, happened to be in the same band as the two greatest songwriters/singers of all time.
The Beatles greatest period was from '65 onwards, and in that period Harrison may have written less, but the quality of his work was consistently on the same level as Lennon & McCartney, and an integral part of all their albums. Not to mention that the John & Paul domination led to the stockpile of material that wasn't used that became "All Things Must Pass"; which is arguably the greatest solo Beatles work. "33 & 1/3", and "Brainwashed" are amazing too...and others as well. Blessings!!
I totally agree, he was completely underrated. Awesome guitarist and better than Lennon[despite what he says] and great voice. If he would have gotten the chance to write more, he would have really been able to contribute more than he already had to the Beatles. His solo career is my favorite as well.
i agree, george was amazingly talented and i have no idea why he was underrated by people, even by john and paul. why rate any of them anyway, they are all incredible and each one is a very crucial part of the whole. (and i never understood why they say paul is the 'cute beatle', aren't they all beautiful?) :)
Exactly! I don't like it when people say "John WAS the Beatles" (or Paul), all four of the guys were the Beatles! They wouldn't be the Beatles if one was missing. I don't think Ringo gets enough credit either (though he was quite popular here in America!).
Great video, I`m a huge fan of George`s but one question...Where did the "You Know What To Do" song come from. I`ve never heard it and I was sure I had all his recordings, both Beatle and solo...Also, thanks for recognizing The Inner Light, one of his best for sure. It was covered well by Jeff Lynne and Anoushka Shankar at the Concert for George. Peace...

George And Ringo are really underrated.
They did some of the best songs in truth.
But not all the people credit them as greatest as John or Paul.
The four of them we're the best and greatest.
My favorite is John but George was maybe the best writer of them but very underrated.

George had some great songs, especially Taxman, Savoy Truffle, It's All Too Much, and Here Comes the Sun. Definitely underrated. Oh yeah, and While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

i think alot of people like his songs but just think john or paul wrote the song they liked. His voice is a mixture of john and pauls voice, so it gets confusing lol

You're right, you not the only one who feels that George is not appreciated enough as a musician because I think so too.

I think he had the best solo career, well look at it this way, he kept getting better and better whilst John and Paul never repeated the same greatness shown in The Beatles.

I like the song "All Things Must Pass" and the demo he did in 1969. I wish John and Paul would had taken interest in this tune then. Its like they were trying not to let George really make a song like he wanted to. I wish Capitol would remaster his 1975 solo album "Extra Texture"!
beatleman69 2 years ago

Really think about it, the amount of McCartney-Lennon songs.

it is true but some think that he isn't good because John and Paul were better

YEs but the fact being that those were some of the only songs they (Paul and John) allowed him to put on their Albums...

He released a triple album after the band broke up and a a part of the songs were songs refused by Paul and John. He wrote a lot more songs that people think, they just weren't released as Beatles songs....

wregerg 3 years ago 4
wow! this is a very compelling argument. "Think for yourself" has always been one of my favorites... George isn't underestimated, he was considered to be the best musician when they started out, and he had the most serious commitment to the band. He had everything to lose and everything to gain (and he gained everything he could)
He was also the best looking :)

In my opinion "I want to tell you" is one of the best songs of the Revolver album and even one of the best songs of The Beatles' entire career.

Blessings!!
linclink 3 years ago 2
I totally agree, he was completely underrated. Awesome guitarist and better than Lennon[despite what he says] and great voice. If he would have gotten the chance to write more, he would have really been able to contribute more than he already had to the Beatles. His solo career is my favorite as well.

Blue Jay Way, Love You To, If I needed someone and Not Guilty - makes it a top 20 list.

i agree, george was amazingly talented and i have no idea why he was underrated by people, even by john and paul. why rate any of them anyway, they are all incredible and each one is a very crucial part of the whole. (and i never understood why they say paul is the 'cute beatle', aren't they all beautiful?) :)
pamelllakaye 3 years ago 8

Peace...
