This song is like the anti-Yakety Sax. Whereas that song makes anything hilarious, this particular piece has the power to make any moment sad/heartwarming. To test it, I opened this song in a tab alongside a Benny Hill chase scene (muting said chase scene, of course). The results were eerie.

actually you're partially right, thought there's a slight problem. Youkai Jeses or "Youcrhist" is a fan nickname, and thus isn't canon. Scarlet Devil actually has nothing to do with Remilia's comparison to Satan, Remila is called the Scarlet Devil because she tends to spill blood all over her white dress when feeding, giving it a scarlet color. This information was given in ZUN's perfect memento in strict sense book. Miko in 10 desires fits the Anti-Christ model more better.

I somehow felt attached the first time I saw St. Byakuren in the game. She is finely drawn for ZUN's Lineworks; sweet, gentle face, caring eyes, that's just blowing my heart away. And after reading the translation of the summarized story of UFO, I found her story to be bittersweet, yet compelling. he remains in her way of thought, her ideal: to help harmonizing human and youkai, even she knows all along that it will put her in pain... that's another blow to my heart.

Its not got the grandness of Cosmic Mind; the intro is alot calmer. Where in the original the key feature of the song, the lilting repeated note volleys, bring you surging tides of battle-earned glory; this is disarming serenity: enough to make the most hardened warriors throw down their weapons and weep for the peace they've now found. Its a totally different Emotional Skyscraper, and singlehandedly fills the much-needed void of works that convey Byakuren's deserved sainthood. Too perfect.

You put me in mind of a Byakuren chained by a seal deep in Makai, somehow managing to smile and comfort other sad youkai who were sealed in the place just like her.

The place where she sat while imprisoned became a famous place amongst Shinki's daughters even after the UFO crew unseal her, a shrine dedicated to her erected on that very spot.

Indeed, she IS that kind. It's why she's referred to as a "saint", after all.

That said, do remember that even the kindest rose has its spines - Byakuren appears to be, from her backstory, every bit as plotting and terrifyingly smart as people like Eirin and Yukari. The difference is Byakuren's plots are for your own good and the downfall of evil, while Yukari's are mostly, as the vernacular goes, "for the lulz" - with a dash of "Gensokyo Protector" thrown in.

@drascin: that, imo, is precisely increases my respect for her so much. Its easy to act kind and pussyfoot around not trying to hurt everyone when you know they'll kick you if you do, but when someone has a CHOICE. Yes, Byakuren COULD become evil, but she CHOSE not to. Not only that, she chose to DESPITE Reimu et al encouraging her to stray. That's fearsome strength of spirit, wouldn't you say?

Something like them not wanting other's to feel as bad as they do/did. She was a sweet person into the seal, and was a sweet person out of it; personal deturmination can keep someone that way.

@85centimeters Imagine Byakuren's surprise when the shrine maiden bests her. She braces herself to be sealed away once again... but no, now that Reimu's defeated her, she figures the accounts are settled and Byakuren will behave herself. Things _have_ changed since her days in the temple.

Byakuren and her followers probably won't show up as bosses or playable anymore - after all, their whole ideal is peaceful coexistence. Except maybe Murasa. Other youkai probably look at them funny.

I feel so late listening to this, but there wasn't much I could do about it (we had a pair of monsters around the house the past week and so I couldn't possibly have properly enjoyed anything during that time).

Personally, I see vocals as another instrument, like a guitar or flute. It fits in or not, and putting it in disturbs the song's balance, or it's needed or not, and trying to smoosh it in again ruins the song. This, I say, is an example of it being in harmony with the other instruments.

I don't see this as a saddening song. It conveys happiness. It feels like the end of a story when you are recalling happy memories.

It does contain a trace of sadness as if recalling memories of someone long gone. All I know about the lyrics is that they talk about someone else at parts. They also talk about how the character feels.
