@garrisonnyc People send the flowers to the family actually and they just present them at the service, also a funeral is closure to most families and somtimes religious reasons.
@garrisonnyc, exactly. I know people who never come to visit people when they are alive but show up at the funeral. Often time, you can't beat them hooping and holing. Show anybody you care for that you care for them when they are living.
@Berniceej One main reason why they close the casket early is because some people do not want to see the body. They stand out in the hall as well as some small children and then walk in after the casket close.
How did I gt here from the show Weeds? Go from get high to die, so strange. Death is the fairest thing in life. Everyone gets a chance at it at least one time.
@sandralmucha Exactly. I followed this link and thought I had found Johnny Cash's funeral. I poured a refreshing adult beverage, lit a good cigar and sat down to watch it...and then I see this Chinaman laying in the casket.
My Step-dad's mother, which I call her "big momma" had died early in the spring and not only she was in the casket, they put few small sticks of peppermint candy in her hand because she likes to eat peppermint candies when she was living and so was her oldest daughter who also passed liked peppermint too. Seeing big momma was the saddest moments of losing her because she was a wonderful person who loves hugs all the time. RIP big ma =(

@efaison30 I FEEL THE CASKET SHOULD REMAIN OPEN UNTIL THE END OF THE SERVICE AND THEN THE FUNERAL DIRECTOR CAN INSTRUCT THAT THE CASKET WILL BE PREPARED FOR BURIAL AND DIMISS THE CONGREGATION AND THEN FAMILY CAN COME TOGETHER AS ONE TO FOLLOW THE CASKET OUT TO IT;S PLACE OF BURIAL.. IT WOULD BE EASIER ON THE FAMILY AND THEY WOULD NOT HAVE THE PAIN OF SEEING THEIR LOVE ONE LOWER DOWN IN THAT CASKET AND LOCKED .
@1971dbj as a Funeral Director, your comment is insulting. We ARE sorry for family members when there's a death. We're human beings too, we've all been in their shoes. Find out what we actually have to DO to prepare a body before you bash the profession for messing with peoples wallets. In other words, bite me.
1971, a very good friend is a funeral director. I've never met a person who feels so deeply for each and every patient that comes to him. Your profession deliveres a service that almost no one understands and so very few have the strength to do.
@Domino3869 You begin to process by draining the body fluids. you have a harsh job, man i can tell you that. I dont think i have the stomach to do your job. I dont mind to spend a wallet pincher amount so long as i know my cold dead body is being taken care of.
@Domino3869 wow why would people put something so personal online? Also, I had a funeral director say something so disgusting to me when a friend passed away. That's cool. I will yelp him to no end. You guys need to take classes in common decency, tact, class, patience and compassion. If you don't like your job OR PEOPLE, explore a new career,.
@Domino3869 Agree with all you wrote, BUT would also agree that prices are way too high. Way too high. I can't imagine being able to look at some of the saddest people in the world on a daily basis like those who work in funeral homes have to. I think you'd really have to be a compassionate person to take up a job there. On the other hand I knew of a guy who works in the crematory part and he is a stone cold asshole. Couldnt care less whose ashes get with whose, nasty person.
@1971dbj - First off, you are a total asshole for making such dumbass comment. Now, let me also say that funeral directors are sorry for the loss of life, but are they sad like it was their own family member for each and every body they prepare for death?? I would say not, but they do empathize with the grieving family. Until you've done what they do, please don't ASSume anything. As for your wallet comment, the services rendered do cost money, but too many facts will probably upset you.
@1971dbj Yes as a funeral director myself, You are sad for the family because they've lost a part of their family. Also don't go talkin about the people who actually do the work because its not an easy task to do. Plus you have multiple times when you are bonding with the family. I don't know if we are the only funeral home who does this but we keep in contact with our families and do depression counciling.Plus we're not expencive at all, its what ever the family chooses. Learn about it
@fcmsinger its not sick. i had a friend that was killed in an atv accident and at his funeral service i took pictures of him and my mom took one of me looking into the casket at him, its just a final memory and its nothing sick or disturbing about it.
@corduff1967 i think it should be posted. since movies and music videos want to keep glamourizing gangs and guns and the mafia and the like, kids and adults will see the realness of tragedy and the horrible finality of a person when the door is closed. even video games are making light of violence. maybe this will jar someone out there to the realities of just how stupid murdure is and how stupid hatred is. this guy is quiet, why watch movies with killing and not be able to see this for real?
@jennaHaistead..well i dont know why you would write that because i can then say "well i dont understand why people would watch it"...why are you on here watching it? it seems like you like watching funerals or something. so maybe they put it on here bc people like YOU enjoy watching it...hahaha
yeh why do americans feel the need to display a body I would refuse to go to a funeral where its open you can say your goodbye just as easily without giving others nightmares.
@runodd Wow. That comment was beyond the levels of rude. Why would you ever even think of that? I'm sickened by the fact that you even brought that up.
toughest part is closing the casket, realising the reality of it and the anxiety beginning to set in.... horrible thing unfortunately all of us will have to go through.
I always thought that open casket funerals you americans are big on is extremely creepy. I prefer to remember people for who they were alive not some stiff.
However, its extremely important to view your loved one one last time before final disposition.
Sure, the last place you wish to see your loved one is in a casket, but viewing them lying there wont demolish any memories of what they were like when they were alive. Viewings aid in the grieving process and should be implemented and encouraged (pending).
@HateYuTube How is pointing out an obvious stereotype racist? Do I hate Asians? No I don't. Don't be mad because I'm right. In fact, why don't you take a picture, It'll last longer ;)
That was the most worst casket closing i have ever seen in my 27 years in the business. No disrespect to the family but id never use that funeral home.
I am a funeral director and bad closings irritate me too. This one looked fine to me except I would have unpinned the flowers & laid them around the person. I also usually crank the bed down slowly but this one was already low enough to clear the head panel. At least he neatly folded & placed the throw. Most people around here will just wad it up & cram it under the lid. I've seen better & much worse final closings.
Thats whats Up yeha i closed a casket one day i was 15 at the time and got my rear chewed out. they showed me the right way to close. i might do a vid showing how i do it. Bt hey each FD has there own style
That's a good idea. I'd like to see that. I do the throw different ways sometimes but I always try to be neat. I was also very young when I did my first closing. I believe I was 17. It was my cousin & I asked them if I could do it. That was way before I went to mortuary school. I've seen some directors place it completely in the upper section of the casket and fold the extendover on top of that leaving only part of the face showing.
ive seen that a few times thats nice lol i do the 5 step closing i have to really do a vid to show u its a one person job to close a casket unless the casket spray is hughe but i'll do a vid this week maybe at a service or just use a empty casket.I was taught this by someone at a Richmond Ca funeral home when i did my apprecticeship there she showed me and i did that ever since its uniform presentable. @Wilo18877 Its been our custom up in the hills of WV to keep the casket open at
every opportunity, even at the grave just before it is closed for the last time and
lowered into the ground.
Having the casket opened gives a feeling of the loved one still "being with us" a
little longer while we celebrate their life. It gives "home folks" a chance to say
their last goodbye to people who may have moved away to the city many years
before and have just "come home". We cherish the open casket.
