Only the ones who have heard JDF live can truly understand that he is spectacular! His
voice is absolutely beautiful and his timbre is a prodigy; one of the best timbres I have heard in more than 28 years of listening to Opera. From the first note to the last is
a continuation of sublime sound with perfect
execution. Compare with other not in volume but in the beautiful timbre, high Cs, and Ds.

I am one of the few people in the world who can't stomach this guy. Sounds like a boy among men. I suppose he's a great musician and technically fine; I just don't care for such a light voice. Ugh.
My god!! That what I call "Envy", but If you don´t know the Opera and the Argument (and what king of voice have to be to this role and why) don´t write something like: "Sounds like a boy"
Well, this opera calls for a light tenor, a belcantista, like the Barber of Seville and many others. This aria would kill Placido Domingo, Lauritz Melchior, Corelli, del Monaco, Caruso or any helden- or dramatic tenor with voices supposedly "manlier" than Florez's.

I was not impressed. He does not have a solid top and does not know how to support. He has a nice vocal line in the mid section of his voice. You might want to hear Rosa Ponselle nad Renata Tebaldi's versions of Ave Maria. I am not much for Counter Tenor's I prefer a real soprano
Want to hear the standard on high notes, massive, but clean power and absolutely impressive? Watch some of Franco Corelli's clips you find right here on YouTube. The only drawback is that (compared to Juan Diego's recordings), Corelli's are at least 30 years old, with 30 years old recording equipment. But you'll be impressed, anyways.
Juan Diego has an excellent voice, with ease at high notes mostly because of his natural higher register. By comparison, Carreras' voice resides at a lower register, so he'll labor on high notes. However, Carreras would sound great singing verismo and I'd be very curious to hear how well Juan Diego could interpret, say, "Un di all'azurro spazio" or "L'anima ho stanca", etc.
My two daughters and I are going to the May 12th performance. This will be our first time at Met. We are very exited .Could somebody tell us the correct attire? Is long dress mandatory? Also is balcony good seeting or should I get better tickets. Thanks!
Check out the webpage of the Met Opera. I think they have a section on dress code. Evening dress is most probably the best choice. And so, yes, long dress is probably the best choice. No jeans unless you are Madonna (and even then, bad choice).
Thanks for advice. I also changed my tickets, because Juan is not performing 12th of May (my daughter didn't notice it) so now we are going for opening night and are seated behind orchestra. 250$ a piece, but he is worth it.I can't wait.
I am going to the La Fille du Regiment Performance at the Met on May 2nd. I can't wait - I am very excited to see Flores live. Anybody else going on the same day?
...but I will say this--his agility is very impressive, but I was somewhat bothered to not hear as much warmth in the voice. Although, within the 'encore set', his voice did become warmer. i enjoyed the encores far more! Irregardless, he's the 'tenore' of the 'international moment' and rightfully so!!! What a gift---Peruvians should be extremely proud!!!
I actually heard him when he made his debut in the Knight Concert Hall in Miami,Fl a 2 weeks ago,(if you haven't made a point to go, just go for the performing art center...it's absolutely amazing!!), he gave 6 encores!!Very generous man!!Undoubtedly a true, grateful, and "old school" tenor!!!
I was plesantly surprised when i heard him sing. I gues even as singers we begin to expect that greatness only comes in huge voices. I listened to his performance and I thought that the prtrayal of his character mtched with his light but undoubtedly beautiful voice wonderfully. There's a place for everything. Even short little light tenors. haha!
Wonderful singing and very accurate. Juan is among the greatest ever. Why do idiots want to knock his so-called soft palate. They, obviously do not know about focusing the voice.
Florez is repeating this role at the Met in April 2008. You should see how many seats are already sold out. He sang Tonio at Milan this year and performed an encore! First encore at Milan in 76 years.

For all educated opera lovers and real fans and not the ones who pretend to like opera can make such ... comments! If Pavarotti mentioned something about Juan Florez don't you think he would know what he was talking about? Have you seen people give such an ovation to an opera singer before? and have any other opera singer had a bis at the Scala?
Denying Juan Diego Florez amazing voice and talent is like trying to block the sun from shining with one finger!
I heard them my fabuloso friend...and I agree, they are very very good....but I dont agree when you say that juandiego voice is ugly...thats a very long sorry shot....
Sorry, i accidently added a p to giuseppe Di Stefano. Anyway the tenors I lisyed below are the greatest tenors of the age and as a matter of fact for all ages.

I would suggest that you listen to Pavarotti sing the same aria on You Tube and you will see what I am talking about. Juan Diego Florez is not a distinguished singer. You should also listen to the these singers on You tube as well. They are Enrico Caruso, Jussi Bjorling, Beniamino Gigli, Tito Schipa, and Giuseppe Di Stephano to hear what real singing is.
awesome performance, it takes a lot of skill to move around a lot while singing this

I was not impressed. He does not have a solid top and does not know how to support. He has a nice vocal line in the mid section of his voice. You might want to hear Rosa Ponselle nad Renata Tebaldi's versions of Ave Maria. I am not much for Counter Tenor's I prefer a real soprano

in that case go check out radu marion ave maria... one of the best i heard so far

Sa1imoS 4 years ago 4
gde81 4 years ago
VIVA JUAN DIEGO FLOREZ!
TatoHerrada 4 years ago
Y, amigos latinoamericanos:
Reinaldo146 4 years ago 2
tamalesytortas 4 years ago
Tienes mucha razon.

Reinaldo146 4 years ago
I don't get it...Corelli is great but has a completely different voice...Can you imagine Corelli's spinto voice singing Tonio?
bsbsbs0101 3 years ago
He may actually be able to pull it off...he had a great top. But it would sound extremely strange. GENERAL TONIO!

hi do u know if a counter bass singer sing this?
GENTELMEN999 3 years ago
i STRONGLY doubt it.
nowayitskevin 3 years ago

Thanks!
jirina42 4 years ago 2
Check out the webpage of the Met Opera. I think they have a section on dress code. Evening dress is most probably the best choice. And so, yes, long dress is probably the best choice. No jeans unless you are Madonna (and even then, bad choice).
KingGale 4 years ago
Thanks for advice. I also changed my tickets, because Juan is not performing 12th of May (my daughter didn't notice it) so now we are going for opening night and are seated behind orchestra. 250$ a piece, but he is worth it.I can't wait.

...but I will say this--his agility is very impressive, but I was somewhat bothered to not hear as much warmth in the voice. Although, within the 'encore set', his voice did become warmer. i enjoyed the encores far more! Irregardless, he's the 'tenore' of the 'international moment' and rightfully so!!! What a gift---Peruvians should be extremely proud!!!
vivomusique 4 years ago
I actually heard him when he made his debut in the Knight Concert Hall in Miami,Fl a 2 weeks ago,(if you haven't made a point to go, just go for the performing art center...it's absolutely amazing!!), he gave 6 encores!!Very generous man!!Undoubtedly a true, grateful, and "old school" tenor!!!

See, I disagree...
I was plesantly surprised when i heard him sing. I gues even as singers we begin to expect that greatness only comes in huge voices. I listened to his performance and I thought that the prtrayal of his character mtched with his light but undoubtedly beautiful voice wonderfully. There's a place for everything. Even short little light tenors. haha!

fratenore 4 years ago
Wonderful singing and very accurate. Juan is among the greatest ever. Why do idiots want to knock his so-called soft palate. They, obviously do not know about focusing the voice.
I hope to hear him in person soon. GWR

Florez is repeating this role at the Met in April 2008. You should see how many seats are already sold out. He sang Tonio at Milan this year and performed an encore! First encore at Milan in 76 years.

A palabras necias oidos sordos!
Juan Diego Florez is the Best Tenor in the world as we speak!
