  • awesome performance, it takes a lot of skill to move around a lot while singing this

    o The Observer, Sunday 23 May 2010

.... “As her shy, knobbly-kneed boyfriend Tonio, Juan Diego Flórez returned to wow us with those famous top Cs and pure, unsullied vocal gymnastics. Only Pavarotti, in living memory, could make it all sound so similarly effortless...”

  • BRAVISIMO COMPATRIOTA!!!... COMO TE OVACIONAN

  • JDF cantara en Lima en Mayo 2011 - El Barbero de Sevilla!

  • Tim Ferriss says about this - "The aria demands the tenor to hit nine high C's in a row — a supremely difficult feat."

Can some specialist point out where those 9 high C's are ? Just curious :)

  • @firuinthehouse

They are in the score or you can just count them as you hear along; 4 + 4 + 1 = 9

  • Wow -- how have I missed this guy? I think I have a new favorite tenor... Fabulous performance!

  • Absolute top!

  • This is french?

  • Yes. Though from what I hear in the original story the soldiers were Austrian rather than French, but Donizetti was in Paris when he wrote "La Fille" so it ended up being a French opera, though I've heard there is also an Italian version.

  • dear god that's a long ovation

  • @zegermans750 yes, and from an audience that doesn't give them away.

  • I am very excited to have tickets to see Florez and Diana Damrau in "La Fille du Regiment" at the SF Opera in late October.

  • do you mind me askin how much they were? and where are u seeing him ? i would love to him myself!

  • I saw the performance last October at the San Francisco Opera. I was in the front balcony and the tickets were $60 each.

  • this guy has a fabulous voice. he seems to be 'in role. he is very handsome. the complete package. the voice fits the role. wonderful.

  • lo aplaudieron 15 minutos ..

  • Wunderschön!!

  • juan is awesome.

  • ...And then Florez sang the aria (Pour mon ame quel destin!) once more...Ah~, What a wonderful voice he gets!

  • unhörbar !!!!

  • Schweinchen!

  • heimart: aha, Sie haben ihn also auch schon mal live erlebt?

  • Es un encanto total ver este video~

  • pure beauty!!!

  • My god, listen to that applause! :D

  • Alejandro Granda, Luis Alva and Juan Diego Florez are peruvian, in Youtube.

  • For my Juan Diego Florez he is the best light tenor of all the ages.

    Placido Domingo.

  • Only the ones who have heard JDF live can truly understand that he is spectacular! His

voice is absolutely beautiful and his timbre is a prodigy; one of the best timbres I have heard in more than 28 years of listening to Opera. From the first note to the last is

a continuation of sublime sound with perfect

execution. Compare with other not in volume but in the beautiful timbre, high Cs, and Ds.

  • You have not idea HOW MUCH YOU'RE RIGHT ABOUT JDF!!!!!!

  • That is the first thing I thought when I heard him. Glad I'm not the only one.

  • My god!! That what I call "Envy", but If you don´t know the Opera and the Argument (and what king of voice have to be to this role and why) don´t write something like: "Sounds like a boy"

  • You don't like him. It's not a tragedy!

    In my opinion he's perfect!!!

  • Well, this opera calls for a light tenor, a belcantista, like the Barber of Seville and many others. This aria would kill Placido Domingo, Lauritz Melchior, Corelli, del Monaco, Caruso or any helden- or dramatic tenor with voices supposedly "manlier" than Florez's.

  • But does not the role demand precisely a boyish voice? You do not want someone which appears to be in his 50s.

  • Pavarotti was known as a master of this aria.

  • You should admite: you hate JDF!!!

  • PERUVIAN BOY =)

  • but nearly, the role fits him

  • I agree.

  • I absolutely LOVE Florez in this role!! His color gives the role such a youthful quality that really makes his performance exeptional!

  • I love JDF in this role. I knew la Fille for him!!! Better than Pavarotti.

  • Such unified singing! This man is a gift.

  • bsbsbs0101 corelli is definetly a dramatic tenor not a spinto! And he probably would have a difficult time singing this and pour man name.

  • hi can a counter bass voice singer sing this?

  • Contemporary opera is garbage. Lugubrious braying by composers who are lucky they don't have to rely on the box office for their supper.

  • Nonsensical flame-bait.

  • Extraordinaire!

  • VIVA EL PERU CARAJO, PERUVIANO STAR

  • I just saw him a few hours ago and i have grown a great appreciation for him. He filled the MET stage wih his great energy and great voices it was a great evening.

  • bravissimo

  • You peruvian people really have to be proud of this your peruvian Orfeo!!!

    I'm proud for you!!!!

  • Perpulchrum, suavissimum, iucundissimum. Gratias magnas Vobis ago pro hac videotaenia. :-)

  • He is so great !!! I saw him on live retransmission from the MET on saturday. He interpreted this aria better than ever !!!

  • I was at the Met on the day of the transmission - it was fabulous live! I waited to meet him at the stage door afterwards - he was so nice! Wrote about it in my blog, pictures too - luindriel

    blogspot

    com

and go back a few posts... ;)

  • Apart from being such a brilliant artist, he is also a very nice person. I saw him live in Paris in his october recital Salle Pleyel. The audience went completely crazy at the end. Voices screaming everywhere some encores !!! He genereously gave us 4, among them "Pour mon âme" interpreted beautifully and with such ease. After the recital, among many others - I saw him and talked to him briefly. He is simple and very sweet, never seems to be tired with his public. Also sooooo handsome !!!

  • thanks for posting, wow, what a show yesterday!!!!

  • I just heard him at the Met. For the first time in my life, he was brought back for an encore!!! What a voice, so effortlessly hitting the high Cs.

    Bravo

  • I was there for opening night this Monday and he also did encore. Excellent performance!!! I gave him dozen roses and have a autograph and picture with him and my daughters. We will never forget that evening.

  • very humble ending. perfect performance

  • Both Pavarotti and Domingo are right!!!!!

  • JDF is one of the 20 greatest tenors of ALL TIMES, chosen by world critics this year 2008!

    in London.

    Bravo!!! Bravo!! Bravo!!

  • omg,he is the beast,techique so good...

  • I was at two of the Royal Opera performances of this production before it moved to Vienna. A great production. We all know who was playing Duchess Craquitorpi in Vienna, I am green with envy! We had Dawn French, who despite her name barely spoke French, let alone sing!

  • I don't understand Giovannifabuloso... what tenors of the past u refer to? I assumed you compare Florez with other leggiero tenors right... such us??? The point is not whether is the best of all time, but whether u can get any better nowadays. Finally, I hope your career is as wonderful as Florez' to sound so authoritative, please illustrate us instead of just provoking people without any real substance in your comments.

  • "Peruvian flags, screaming fans, a carpet of roses for Juan Diego: Il senor Florez takes La Scala, Again" Opera Chic January 28, 2008.

"Anytime, anyplace Juan Diego sticks it to Milan". Opera Chic.

"Florez sent La Scala into delirium" Affari italiani, Jan 2008.

  • I think you've stated your opinion, Fabulous Giovanni, quite enough times on this thread. Knock it off.

  • Shock us with your true identity then...you sound bitter since you keep repeating yourself in this thread. Yawn. Florez has an amazing voice, which is acclaimed by people more renowned than you I would guess.

  • Pavarotti said him self he is the next great tenor

  • He has a brilliant tone, but his downfall is going to be his legato line. Everything he sings lacks line and elegant phrasing. His coloratura technique is exquisite though.

  • Is Ah Mes Amis sung in Italian or German?

  • French

  • CUIDADO QUE JUAN DIEGO SE ESTA VOLVIENDO CADA VEZ MEJOR Y CON SU ESTILO PROPIO YA ESTA HACIENDO HISTORIA, cuidado alfredo kraus y pavarotti, JUAN DIEGO ES EL TERCERO EN DISCORDIA .. MAESTRO JUNA DIEGO

  • That was the longest applause I have ever heard! Is he crying when they are applauding him? If I was him or the audience I will start sobbing with joy to hear such beautiful opera.

  • He got the record for the longest applause later in another performance , 15 minutes! But the video is not on youtube...

  • Is there any way you can show me that video? I would really like to see it.

  • I think you might like to hear a soprano that is a voice in one billion ..that is a true soprano..check out radu Marion singing ave maria..please let me know what you think ..

  • in that case go check out radu marion ave maria... one of the best i heard so far

  • Want to hear the standard on high notes, massive, but clean power and absolutely impressive? Watch some of Franco Corelli's clips you find right here on YouTube. The only drawback is that (compared to Juan Diego's recordings), Corelli's are at least 30 years old, with 30 years old recording equipment. But you'll be impressed, anyways.

  • I don't get it...Corelli is great but has a completely different voice...Can you imagine Corelli's spinto voice singing Tonio?

  • He may actually be able to pull it off...he had a great top. But it would sound extremely strange. GENERAL TONIO!

  • hi do u know if a counter bass singer sing this?

  • i STRONGLY doubt it.

  • Juan Diego has an excellent voice, with ease at high notes mostly because of his natural higher register. By comparison, Carreras' voice resides at a lower register, so he'll labor on high notes. However, Carreras would sound great singing verismo and I'd be very curious to hear how well Juan Diego could interpret, say, "Un di all'azurro spazio" or "L'anima ho stanca", etc.

  • bravissimo!!!!! Happy New Year!!!

  • El talento del sieglo. Eviva JDF y Peru.

Feliz Año Nuevo 2008 desde Suiza.

  • j'adore!

  • great! great!

  • that is a monstrous applause

  • Yes -- about 2 and a half minutes -- from a Viennese audience that doesn't give it away.

  • Perfecto!

  • Bravissimo

  • He became quickly the best tenor colorature ever

  • Bravo!!!

  • he is not just an excellent tenor, but a wonderful person,,,,

  • My two daughters and I are going to the May 12th performance. This will be our first time at Met. We are very exited .Could somebody tell us the correct attire? Is long dress mandatory? Also is balcony good seeting or should I get better tickets. Thanks!

  • Check out the webpage of the Met Opera. I think they have a section on dress code. Evening dress is most probably the best choice. And so, yes, long dress is probably the best choice. No jeans unless you are Madonna (and even then, bad choice).

  • Thanks for advice. I also changed my tickets, because Juan is not performing 12th of May (my daughter didn't notice it) so now we are going for opening night and are seated behind orchestra. 250$ a piece, but he is worth it.I can't wait.

  • Un orgullo este tenor para toda America! Bravo Florez!!!

  • I am going to the MET too, but May 16/08.

  • It's a shame. Would be fun to get together in the intermission or before the peformance.

You and I seem to be on the same page about Juan Diego Flores and his beautiful voice.Anyway, I hope you enjoy the show.

  • Hey cool, me too!

  • I am going to the La Fille du Regiment Performance at the Met on May 2nd. I can't wait - I am very excited to see Flores live. Anybody else going on the same day?

  • YES!! I just got a ticket for May 2nd yesterday! I'm soooo excited!!! I'll send you a message...

  • ...but I will say this--his agility is very impressive, but I was somewhat bothered to not hear as much warmth in the voice. Although, within the 'encore set', his voice did become warmer. i enjoyed the encores far more! Irregardless, he's the 'tenore' of the 'international moment' and rightfully so!!! What a gift---Peruvians should be extremely proud!!!

  • I actually heard him when he made his debut in the Knight Concert Hall in Miami,Fl a 2 weeks ago,(if you haven't made a point to go, just go for the performing art center...it's absolutely amazing!!), he gave 6 encores!!Very generous man!!Undoubtedly a true, grateful, and "old school" tenor!!!

  • I HAVE JUST BOUGHT THE LAST FEW TICKETS LEFT

TO SEE JUAN DIEGO FLOREZ AND NATALIE DESSAY AT THE MET NEXT MAY 2008!!

I am so lucky, I can hardly wait!! to see this live!!

I guess people cannot wait to listen to the

    best in OPERA TODAY!!

  • wow... did he really get to take a bow during a live performance? that's awesome

  • "striking tonal beauty, flexibility & vibrancy, faultless".... MIami Herald Oct 18/07.

"heart-stopping legato, astonishing clear high D, the bravoes soon swelled to a wall shaking level ... London, The times Oct 08/07

  • See, I disagree...

I was plesantly surprised when i heard him sing. I gues even as singers we begin to expect that greatness only comes in huge voices. I listened to his performance and I thought that the prtrayal of his character mtched with his light but undoubtedly beautiful voice wonderfully. There's a place for everything. Even short little light tenors. haha!

  • Wonderful singing and very accurate. Juan is among the greatest ever. Why do idiots want to knock his so-called soft palate. They, obviously do not know about focusing the voice.

I hope to hear him in person soon. GWR

  • Florez is repeating this role at the Met in April 2008. You should see how many seats are already sold out. He sang Tonio at Milan this year and performed an encore! First encore at Milan in 76 years.

  • This guy is totally crazy... he speaks with himself! xD

    spgtenor (hace 3 días)

    Actually his soft palate....

    spgtenor (hace 3 días)

    I agree, and would....

    spgtenor (hace 3 días)

    Yes! Standards have decreased....

  • He isn't crazy, because he has answered to other people. But what he says, especially "actually his soft palate..." IS crazy and faulse.

  • It is really funny when "some people" try to deny the obvious!! Juan Diego Florez is an amazing singer! and the best!

A palabras necias oidos sordos!

Juan Diego Florez is the Best Tenor in the world as we speak!

  • For all educated opera lovers and real fans and not the ones who pretend to like opera can make such ... comments! If Pavarotti mentioned something about Juan Florez don't you think he would know what he was talking about? Have you seen people give such an ovation to an opera singer before? and have any other opera singer had a bis at the Scala?

Denying Juan Diego Florez amazing voice and talent is like trying to block the sun from shining with one finger!

  • you´re 100% right

  • I heard them my fabuloso friend...and I agree, they are very very good....but I dont agree when you say that juandiego voice is ugly...thats a very long sorry shot....

  • Sorry, i accidently added a p to giuseppe Di Stefano. Anyway the tenors I lisyed below are the greatest tenors of the age and as a matter of fact for all ages.

  • lanza

  • I agree, and would also add some tenors like Wunderlich, Gedda, Kraus and many others to hear what great tenors sound like.

  • Dude, did Juan Diego fuck your wife?

  • no he fucked yours ..LOL
