Hilary is simply the most amazing violinist ever. She is seemingly incapable of playing out of tune. Her Tchaikovsky concerto recorded with the Royal Liverpool orchestra, just makes me cry, it's just so beautiful.
Definitely a great musician. Her intonation is so precise that it's enjoyable just to listen to her for pitch control alone. When she plays two strings at once her pitch precision is gorgeous. Listen to her play Paganini double harmonics vs Perlman, Rabin, or Schaham. She even plays the harmonics sweetly and they sound like the violin is whistling. I've yet to hear such intonation precision in others.
@robertslistening You're absolutely right. Further than that, she has already matured these years to the level that it's also enjoyable just to listen to her phrasing alone.
When I hear words like "properly matured" and "old soul" used on people as lovely as Hilary Hahn, I think it's a great insult, them sort of wanting to take her as one of their own, thinking that where they belong is so special.
let me say that her face is something between the face of an angel and a face of a demon. anyway incredible, magic, special and awesome, she and her violin.
@angelishify If you have ever played the violin seriously, you would have to know that it is a very demanding instrument. Only the most disciplined and hardened personality can bring music out this piece of wood and four slender strings. You will see this kind of discipline, what some call "coldness" in many great violinists - Heifetz comes to mind. Just close your eyes and listen to the music - there is no coldness there at all, but that beauty comes only at the price of unflinching dedication.
The journey of a prodigy can be the Everest of human achievement. You still have to climb the mountain and deal with the pain of the discipline. In the English dictionary, 'blister' comes before 'bravo'.
God has blessed Hahn like a pitcher in the perpetual 8th inning of a no-hitter.
Frost, the record producer here, errs greatly in saying, at 2:40
"The challenge is that you're going to be compared to the great violinists of this century who have recorded Bach."
Surely the "challenge", as in all musical performance, is to be faithful to the intentions of the composer. Bach certainly did not intend the outer movements to be taken at the blurring, undanceable (despite the claim at 4:52), actually nerve-wracking, speeds at which Hahn plays them. (c/f Oistrakh, again).
Nice, cool, racy, technically very competent, lady-like playing. But only that. Certainly not great, ie profoundly moving, playing such as David Oistrakh's in his vastly superior 1962 performance of this work with Colin Davis at QE Hall, London.
I am a fan of music in general I don't say one genre is better then the others. I prefer classical melodies to the more modern bass and sound boards, but did you know most of the famous pop artists are classically trained to start with...Lady Gaga-piano/vocals Beyonce-Opera/Chours, Tatoo-Opera/Violin/Piano. There are many of them, music is something to be enjoyed whether it is Motzart, Britteny Spears, or Nightwish. What makes music special is that there is no right or wrong way, just listen
This is amazing music. I'm playing this song right now, and I feel downright horrible when I hear her play it so quickly and elegantly. It is pretty cool to be able to mime the fingerings along with her as she plays, though. This is a wonderful piece of music and I'm glad I have the opportunity to learn it, even if I can't play it as well as her.
A wonderful person who takes time to meet and autograph for all her fans after every performance. Ignore the negative comments here posted by delinquents. Go see Hilary yourself and experience the performance of a lifetime.

@quinto34 Actually, most scientific studies today suggest that THC encourages the growth of new cells in the brain (not to mention encourages the death of cancer cells while stimulating the growth of new cells in their place).
Also, you can hardly call cannabis smokers unintelligent. Carl Sagan, Bob Dylan, Richard Feynman, and Diego Rivera were all avid cannabis users among many, many more.
@quinto34 There are a lot of famous artists & musicians that attribute 'weed' to their passion and creativity. In any case, why mention Hilary Hahn and weed in the same sentence???
@quinto34 I agree that classical music performers probably wouldn't be able to perform while on canabis.. Although I'm pretty sure 'some' classical performers drink alcohol or smoke canabis while not performing.. ..
It's harder to be a classical musician than it is to be a pop.
More than once, I've heard dozens of pop songs being played to the same list of chords being played repeatedly by a single guitarist or pianist. It's strange how most of the modern day songs we're familiar with are just a theme and variation on a series of chords that existed and were popular from the era of Johann Sebastian Bach.
@Zappyguy111 It's harder to be an astronaut than it is to be a deep see diver.. Sorry, but classical vs pop is a stupid comparison. An incommensurability in mathematical/philosophical terms.
Astronaut and Deep sea diver is like comparing a tomato with an onion. They're both round and edible, but unrelated otherwise.
To me comparing different genres of music is more like comparing a Roma tomatoes and cherry tomatoes. They're both tomatoes despite the size, shape and taste.
@Zappyguy111 For genre issues see my playlists. Deep see divers and astronauts do basically the same things, only in different physical environments. Classical and pop musicians do entirely different things. Virtuosity, a key ingredient of classical music, hardly plays a role in pop music, which has entirely different goals. You accuse pop musicians of not matching criteria which they don't pretend to match in the first place. So there's no point in doing that. Each his/her own metier..
But both set out to set out to induce emotions when people listen to them. One takes the long and extravagant way while the other takes the shortcut and doesn't deviate much from the set emotion. :P
I am not accusing anyone of anything. Each genre completes each of their own metier.
@voxhunden My comment was to point out funny things that appear in our modern world, are in fact things that have been around for hundreds of years. They have been given "a new coat of paint" to make them seem different.
Good question, was wondering myself... jdducut83 is right that it's not her playing, you can hear the notes before she evens picks up her violin - still I'd love to know which piece it is!
Her violin is a copy of Paganini's 'Cannone' made by Vuillaume. As for her strings, she uses Dominants for the A, D and G (all medium gauge) and uses a Wondertone E
@ginecologist . She is the greatest performer of Bach's violin concertos, but I did not know that the man with the batton was the twin brother of Gene Wilder!!!

A musician on her level can't effort smoking weed, they need all the braincells they have lol
quinto34 2 years ago 17

@RandomWalkTheory
I seriously doubt you will find professional classical music performers using canabis..might be fine for some less complicated arts.. ..
quinto34 1 year ago
@quinto34 I agree that classical music performers probably wouldn't be able to perform while on canabis.. Although I'm pretty sure 'some' classical performers drink alcohol or smoke canabis while not performing.. ..

@quinto34

An incommensurability in mathematical/philosophical terms.
voxhunden 11 months ago
@voxhunden
I'm guessing you're an exclusive genre listener?
Zappyguy111 11 months ago
@Zappyguy111 For genre issues see my playlists. Deep see divers and astronauts do basically the same things, only in different physical environments. Classical and pop musicians do entirely different things. Virtuosity, a key ingredient of classical music, hardly plays a role in pop music, which has entirely different goals. You accuse pop musicians of not matching criteria which they don't pretend to match in the first place. So there's no point in doing that. Each his/her own metier..
voxhunden 11 months ago
@voxhunden

They have been given "a new coat of paint" to make them seem different.

does anyone know who made her violin or what kind it is?!
Muggleman12 2 years ago
Her violin is a copy of Paganini's 'Cannone' made by Vuillaume. As for her strings, she uses Dominants for the A, D and G (all medium gauge) and uses a Wondertone E
noster88 2 years ago
@Muggleman12 She plays a 1864 Vuillaume, and it's a copy of the Cannone Guarneri del Gesu.
