@herbo102 I thumbed up your post. I am questioning the idea of having heroes,
b/c Hitchens said that may not be healthy. But we lost him before I could understand.
I am not sure yet.
Notwithstanding, Fry is a marvelous example of the heroic, and the best of human qualities. I admire him greatly. Maybe all my heroes and heroines are at the same level. Stephen spoke me to tears of sadness and joy. I had never seen him before this debate. He simply stole my heart. Integrity rules.
@bigotmaster: [...]doesn't "matter" (or something along those lines), and while that is not true, the debate on what happens now with the catholic church is more urgent than that of any past events (be they regarding atrocities carried out by catholics or by jews).
As Stephen Fry, I do not intend to force someone from their beliefs, but I do believe that organised religion is not exclusively a source of good, and indeed that the good it produces does not justify the negative aspects and costs.
@bigotmaster: Stephen Fry is in no way saying that Judaism through history has been any better than Catholicism. As you said, he is not a practising jew, and is opposed to all organised religion. The reason that he treats catholicism here is that 1. The two opposing parts are Catholics. 2. The Catholic Church is currently a much greater force than Judaism is, in imposing their beliefs and ways on others and deciding how people should live. Widdecombe(?) had previously stated that history[...]
No offense @26highstreet, but that's a pretty damning look to take. I'd love to know, have you followed the 10 commandments to a 'T', because otherwise you really have no stance in insulting another about acting so 'high-and-mighty' when you, yourself, are acting so. Everyone has a right to their own opinion, and the church constantly shoves theirs down everyone's throats, so Mr. Fry speaking his thoughts is perfectly reasonable.
Wow, that's an outrageous claim! Then again, Stephen is famous for speaking his mind. I'm floored by his speech. It's a jaw-dropper, if you ask me. These are things almost everybody knows deep down but is unable to put words to. Here, Stephen Fry is a voice for those people.

Look at him standing there the pretentious idiot as he takes the high moral ground while he receives claps and praises from his peers. I tell you he has his full reward right there but in heaven he will receive nothing unless he repents and humbles himself in realisation that he is also sinful, sinful to the top of his ego inflated pompous head.
The man is a media whore with views on everything, convicted of theft, admitted to being a junkie, dating men less than half his age..
@26highstreet And you in your so called heaven will be treated with all the loving you could ever receive? How is Stephen Fry here any less taking the moral high ground than those who speak for the church? The church take SUCH a moral highground that it takes the biscuit. Who are you to say who someone should live their life? Who are you to try and control people using revealed truths that are carried down from a book. A BOOK that has been picked at so many times it losses all credibility.
This is simply a beautiful and inspiring speech by Stephen Fry. I cannot stop admiring his intelligence, charisma and wittiness. And I must say blandlife4ever and me have one thing in common - Stephen Fry is our favourite person in the whole world.
Absolutely brilliant! Well done Stephen. And many thanks to you quarlo2 for locating and posting this full length unedited version, that I had no idea existed. Thanks again...
Stephen is an interesting human being he is respectful and tolerant yet reasonable and logical that is why he is my favorite person in the whole world

Augustine made some interesting points, but I must say I prefer to take my philosophy from a human and not a hippo.

How lightheartedly Stephen Fry can put such an intelligent and well-formulated argument, without ad hominem flaws. Thanks for uploading.
