wow I live in dungarvan, this is weird looking at this. I grew up in london to irish parents (i'm 26) few years ago we moved back. I'm only now learning about the history of Ireland. History at school in england mostly covered the romans, british empires of over the years, monarchy etc as i remember. obviously we weren't told the facts about what Britain did to the Irish.....

The allies didnt start the war either and it was not only the people of the UK that were killed. The extra 200 miles that ships had to travel to reach uk ports were a favorite hunting ground of the U boats. From what i understand the treaty ports were denied by the Irish government . T I also think it should not be forgotten that many Irishmen and woman did enlist in both world wars and in other conflicts and all should be thankful for for their bravery and sacrifice

. Irelands coast was defended by the allied navy who fought to protect ireland while the irish government stood back and did not join the nations who fought against the evils of facism

Stoodback? We were neutral !! Why send a country of roughly 3 million to war and loose thousand our population, with a country we had a troubled past with. As for the ports the agreement ended in 1938 as you said.

The UK and Irish goverments made joint plans for the british army to be invited by the Irish government to occupy their country if if the germans landed. It was reasoned that the germans would use ireland to cut off all supplies. The only reason that ireland was not invaded was the The RAF and british navy could not be defeated The irish didnt have a troubled past with with other nations whos people were slaughtered by the U boats. New zealands population wasnt very big but they fought.
