They had a soldier a few years back die in an incident in which he was rappelling of the tower showing of to his family he could do the Ausie Rappel going face first, snapped his neck. long story short no showing off, especially without a helmet.

There are a few factors. Time, stress, UV exposure, and general wear. The rule of thumb for soft goods like harnesses, slings, ropes, etc. is 3 years. This isn't a rule, more like a guideline. If you no longer feel confident in it, then you should get a new one.
