  • lots of work on your side and it takes/took a lot of Thinking on both sides (this horrible T-word :). For me you've proven that video surrealism is even richer then paintings and I find it really cool! :)))

  • Very nice work.

  • Very 'David Lynch'! Good work!

  • What did you use to film it?

  • @WretchedSpawnUG Hi there, thanks for watching. I filmed it on a Digi8 camcorder, with the big hi8 cassettes before I moved onto miniDV. Seems so long ago now since I don't even use miniDV anymore!

  • This is pretty great i think your strengths were in lighting an texture. I also thought that the sound was a crucial part of this film which was done very well. I'm not familiar with your style but i think that it could've been better if you included different symbolic things interwoven with the plot to make it more abstract. But indeed a very interesting film work.

  • @ilovefakietreflips Yes it definately would be different if I made it today as I'm constantly in search of a unique look. This was very Lynchian for me, and was made on the back of inspirations such as he, Tsukamoto, Svankmajer and Bunuel for college. I'm happy it's still getting feedback it seems to be the only film of mine that is!

    Thanks for watching buddy :)

  • I've always wanted to try making surreal shorts and this is a very good one :)

Are there by chance any ways to make them on a computer?

  • @WretchedSpawnUG I edit them on computer and if you know your 3D animation programmes or even flash then im sure you could make a good film on computer.

  • @britsploitation Sadly, I have no understanding of either, although I have several ideas.

  • i will never look at my cousins toys the same way.. o___o

    good job m8 5/5 =)

  • @valorit thank you my friend 3 years on now and it's still getting attention. for that thank you and everyone else very much, it is appreciated.

  • Very well done. I can see quite a lot of time must have been spent on this in post. Wonderfully atmospheric!

  • @HungerCultFilms Thanks a lot for watching! funnily enough it was only filmed on a digi8 camcorder but the B&W added richness and quality. post wasn't too much of a big deal after that. - TOM

  • bravo.

  • terrifying. excellent.

  • thank you!

  • Hi all, my new surreal little weirdy SHOE is online now! Go see it and let us know what you think :-)

  • Brilliant!, great lighting and sound. five stars mate!

  • thanks mate glad you liked it!

  • decidedly dark. i kept wanting nothing to happen.

  • Cool. i saw also a bit of hellraiser and puppetmaster influence. Just curious: Did you made it with film, or video?

  • Hey

    Shot it on digi8 camcorder

    pic looks quite cool considering!

  • creepy

    no offence

    but

    1:26

    wuz that a dick

  • Never noticed the subliminal dick before! Sadly its the shadow of the Clowns arm, but thanks for pointing it out!

  • That was fantasticly done, very surreal indeed. Nice one.

  • that was pretty sweet.

eraserhead has such incredible usage of lighting and i thought you captured that very well here.

  • i thought that was brilliant. well done!

  • Instead of all the tossybollocks people put criticising this, i thought it wa pretty good an would work with you on a film any day

  • watch my surreal short film

  • awesome!

  • I think that your shots are beautiful, but the classical style of your editing takes away from the off kilter style of the film as a whole. You might want to think about the editing in the same way you shot and composed the idea of the film.

  • the lighting isnt bad ,but as long as you have a basic eye for composition a low single source key light creates eerie shadows due to a lack of fills. It gives those white circles of light which are passable and moody but dont create much depth, and you can on video even with multiple flashlights.shots o.k, sound 1 track?? but you need to find your own style. otherwise you could end up a technician or you could carry on making pretentious, unoriginal, films with bandaids of symbolism..

  • i agree, very informative and true, it is shot very well. The eery feel takes away from it looking like a student film. From one aspiring director to another, good job.

  • the reason this adopts the same style as anything by Lynch is that it was a college project on adapting their look. Carbon Copies and all that, I agree that my own style doesn't come accross which is what has refrained me from taking it further than Youtube. I'd like to share some of my other shorts with you if only they weren't too long to put up on here! Thanks for the feedback.

  • I think there is some excellent stop motion photography in this film. Very surreal, Nice one, even though it was a college project.

  • hey , sorry my english is not very good , but I love youre film , it is verry great strange do you like david lynch ??

  • 5 stars for the visuals, 1 for the audio.

  • Very very original, i loved it

  • Fantastic work, very inspiring indeed.

    Nick J.Townsend

  • Great!

  • Good work. Makes a great ode to David Lynch and the like. One thing I would recommend would be to not have the doll sitting on a computer monitor. It reminds the viewer of something outside of the video it interrupts the overall feeling. Just a small issue though.

  • This was a really interesting piece to look at. I got caught out when the baby started spewing out liquid... I didn't see that one coming. lol That was really cool. I liked how you've used the light and dark in certain spots as well and the fact that it's black and white makes it nicer to look at. And that slowed baby sound was eerie... How long u been trying ur hand at this stuff?

  • I've been making films since the age of 11, naturally as I got older they improved. I made a couple of oddball troma-esque b-movies before this one and even at feature length don't hold a candle to 'A child's toy' which I like to describe as my ode to David Lynch hehe. Glad you liked the film and thank you!

  • Very well done! I was enthralled! I'm glad you made several symbolic connections, like the umbilical cord, birth, and the chain of life. The Manufacturer was a nice touch and I love the anonymity caused by the business suit and black glasses. I would've loved to have seen him take off the glasses and reveal eyeholes, doll eyes, or something disturbing.I loved this video and because of the great combination of cinematography, pacing, ambient sound, and action, I'd watch this a few more times.

  • Thank you very much for the kind words and the feedback, means a lot to me! The idea about the 'dolls eyes' is amazing.

  • AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I just hate dolls is all. I LOVED THE BEGINING!

  • What camera format was this done on? Image quality is very good, especially considering it's a dark piece?

  • It was shot on a standard digi8 camcorder but because it was shot in b&w (also turning the exposure down) and with the use of lighting it created an extremeley rich picture quality.

  • This could have been very cool but there just seems to be something lacking. I can't put my finger on it but nice work.

  • well if you find out whats lacking let me know!

  • Okay I just watched it again... two things I can think of that I notice. The black and white is good but the light is too even. It basically looks like you took the movie and simply stripped color from it. You need some flickering or other type of imperfections to give it a creepier feeling. The other thing is it's too smooth which takes some of the atmosphere from it. Yea, I know it's not a stop motion. Take this all with a grain of salt as I'm comparing it to Quay brothers and Jan Sv.

  • Yeah, with it being shot on digital I couldn't really perfect the look we get when done on celluloid (my editing suite wasn't too brilliant either) I'd love to experiment with 16/35mm someday. Thanks for the feedback!
