very interesting and thx for taking the time to respond, interesting that the niners choose a sort of military type of danse to celebrate, good stuff.
Not wanting to sound dreary, but we played this at my mums funeral. She love Matt McGinn and her father was a miner in Lanarkshire. I had not heard it, until my brother suggested it. Its a lovely old song. I think my mum would have appeciated it.
@edward0988 This a Rapper Sword Dance. The 'sword' is a flexible metal strip with a wood handle at each end. Still danced regularly, mostly in Northumberland - very tricky, needs a lot of stamina and enough strength to lift another dancer.
I first heard this sung by luke kelly. We have no real history of mining coal in ireland but what the men did back then for there family`s was unbelievable.True gents. To put up with such hardship and still keep a smile on their face.I salute all you miners past and present. You should never be forgotten
There's just nae words for how gorgeous this is. I associate Matt so much with his humour, it's easy to forget he can make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end as well.
i agree wae yea craigowler it wid be a dissaster. I lve his music, i've listened snc i was wee and im only a teen but i still listen to it. wits the point in not.. ?
Both - song and video are made for to get goose flesh,... because the style of singing shows so much love and although the melody is simple its full of love, too.
The video is intensive and demonstrates a strange and hard , but also a more intensive lifestyle.
My great grandfather was a miner in and around the Durham area so watching this video helped me have a bit of an insight into how hard life really was. I also believe he took part in Jarrow walk (bare footed) in protest.
the term "timeless classic" gets thrown about a fair bit, but here's the genuine article.
