Tagliavini had an exceptionally sweet sound when he first started but it was very quickly damaged by playing to the gallery and singing a repertoire that was not totally right for him. He had a very small voice and trying to sing roles like Caravadossi at the Met and other houses led to tight bleating sounds on top as heard in the Lucia with Callas. Here he should have sung the aria as written with a soft high a the effect can be awesome but he gives all.
I guess you heard too much of Gigli? The art of singing of Tagliavini cannot be compared with Gigli. You have to listen to the perfect technique of Tagliavini, of his dynamic, ups and downs of the tune, how he gives breath and life to each note. Its a wonderful study how a singer gives "live" to an aria, rendering account of all the brillant facets of the human voice.
Sono completamente d'accordo con la tua valutazione. Hai veramente un gusto buono. Peccato che non più sanno apprezzare dei voce perfetti come Tagliavini. Oggiogiorno si sente troppo gridi e strilli.
