Close, CarpeMetus. It isn't the speed they were drained at. It isn't the suction, exactly. The same thing can be achieved by boiling water inside the tank, and then sealing it before the steam can cool. The result is a vacuum inside the tank, either from the hot steam cooling, or from your suction hose.

The container is crushed as a result of the weight of the atmosphere outside the tank. We've done the same thing with a 45 gal drum and a propane stove.

The same thing can happen to dairy tanks.

They aren't drained by gravity, they are hooked up to a huge vacuum and drained really fast.

The suction is so strong that if you don't open a valve on the top to allow air to flow in and replace the liquid the suction collapses the tank.

It still happens, you just gave the wrong reason.
