@TOCR815 They were still shooting and fighting, as in the book says more ladders went up on the wall by the time the deeping wall had been blown to bits. Then, They had started to retreat, but Obviously Haldir didnt make it. Also, Eomer was already at the Hornburg ere the fight started. It was Erkenbrand and the westfold men who saved the day.

@outlaw42001 Not really...the enemy was already being pressed back by the main frontal assault. Not to mention the route was almost completely unguarded because of the distraction overhead. Plus, the Uruk Hai are uber-orcs. They are meant to have no fear and are incredibly strong. With ease a group of Beserkers could have run down to create a diversion while the main force pulled a 200 man assault party up from the reserve and stormed the flanks while the main forced pulled a double envelope.

That reinforcement at the end is the second best moment in the whole trilogy. The movie spends like 90 minutes preparing you for their doom, so much so that I personally forgot that Gandalf was out searching for reinforcements. And then they get saved, amazing. The best is the equivelant at Minas Tirith. Amazing stuff

@Alioon6 Well think of it this way. If the elves never showed up, Helm's deep would've fallen before Gandalf arrived with reinforcements. Rohan would've been destroyed utterly and no help would've gone to Minas Tirith and Aragorn would not have traveled the paths of the dead and summoned the dead army to defeat Sauron's army. Maybe Galadriel saw the future and knew their sacrifice had to be made.
