Dude i agree with you for the most part. I Hate bands that use their popularity to push an experimental album, as Opeth just has. They should just suck it up and do a side project, rather than taint their Band Name. However, that being said, and with the constant trend of my favorite bands all doing the same thing. I'm gonna have to mentally seperate the band names from the music and try to enjoy it simply for what it is.

I would think that if morbid angel being the blast beat band they are would sound more like fear factory if they had the industrial influence, Being a big Fear factory fan and hearing that they mixed industrial and death metal. Who would have thought that the reunion with Vincent would produce the worst death metal album of all time? As one of the commentators already said; the failed miserably even at going commercial. It's almost impossible to imagine Trey Azagthoth playing these songs with a straight face.

When i first heard morbids new album i was blown away how much they deviated from their roots....needless to say i kept what i like on my ipod and deleted the rest. Im all for being creative...but i agree this was definitely two diff flavors of metal that should not have been on the same record. If anything they should have created a diff band name/image to promo the new sound and done a split album. Whomever managed this should be beaten to death for tainting a classic niche in this genre.

I have to say I like the album. And one of the reasons is the experimental tracks! It's challenging, fresh and inspiring to hear and I like the musical landscapes they travel through! It's a good combination with their more classic DM tracks, I think!
Songstructures, technical abilities, melodies or harmonies can be weak. It can be too monotonous.... Whatever. But I don't think any of the above arguments apply to the new Morbid Angel except 'bad taste' of course...
I remember hearing 'Altars' for the first time on an old cassette copied for the 5th time and I was actually diappointed when I heard the actual album and everything sounded so clear... Deicide's Legion is an example of poor production but still a classic album!

Oh and great review man. One of the things I liked was how you talked about all the 'fans' of the album saying us haters are being narrow-minded.
I'm all for bands experimenting with their music, Judas Priest and Overkill are two examples that experimented and pulled it off (at times).
This is just a failure though. Maybe if they got an actual talented vocalist for them it would of turned out better.

Im all for being creative...but i agree this was definitely two diff flavors of metal that should not have been on the same record. If anything they should have created a diff band name/image to promo the new sound and done a split album. Whomever managed this should be beaten to death for tainting a classic niche in this genre.

For an informed critic, you sure have crappy taste in music. GRAVE???!!!! Come on!!!! I bought their first two tapes in 1992, and MAN, they sucked!!!!! Anything on the Century Media label at that time was raw, underskilled, and mediocre at best! The other horrible group at that time was UNLEASHED! Who knew that they would stick it out and eventually become somewhat triumphant? When I heard "Where No Life Dwells," I felt ripped off and wanted my money back! Are there any decent bands from Sweden?

I really think morbid angel screwed up the album I liked though, they should have kept this as a side project and premoted something heavier that in my opinion is where they went wrong, they should have known that most of their fans wouldn't like it

I have to say I like the album. And one of the reasons is the experimental tracks! It's challenging, fresh and inspiring to hear and I like the musical landscapes they travel through! It's a good combination with their more classic DM tracks, I think!

Songstructures, technical abilities, melodies or harmonies can be weak. It can be too monotonous.... Whatever. But I don't think any of the above arguments apply to the new Morbid Angel except 'bad taste' of course...
I remember hearing 'Altars' for the first time on an old cassette copied for the 5th time and I was actually diappointed when I heard the actual album and everything sounded so clear... Deicide's Legion is an example of poor production but still a classic album!

Almost anytime it's subject to taste but still, an album can be bad for many reasons. They can play sloppy. The production can be bad. They can play or sing out of tune or out of time.

I'm actually really enjoying the many whining reactions by DM-fans, but ok. Actually, Trey wrote a blog some years ago with the question; 'is the metalworld narrow minded?'. Well, I guess he is getting his answer now. But anyway, I don't like industrial or 'dutch techno' so much and I had to get used to the album but this thing really seems to work for me!!
