I love this song, and especially the singer. The actress who sang this lived to be a 102 =) Can't believe my grandparents were only 3 here...time sure does fly by.
@Mullahgrrl my grandmother lived through it. she told me stories about how she had to put cardboard in her shoes to cover the hole since they only got one new pair a year, and the weren't ever that poor compared to others. no i don't know that we'll NEVER know poverty like that. but i do know that what were going though now is nothing compared to that.
No. It won't. Ever. Because we DON'T feel as much empathy. Because we don't respect people who are wounded and broken in wars. Because when push comes to shove, we've changed the nature of things.
And as such, we won't have something like this ever again. When the 'Three Stooges' movie has SNOOKIE of all people in it, it's a large tell. We don't promote the great. We promote the low.
Thank you for posting! This brilliance won't be seen again in film or songwriting... Joan Blondell is an under-appreciated actress and Etta Moten is amazing.
This ends golddiggers of 1933,this brings the feelings of the depression and the way the vets of The Great War" AKA WW1 were forgotten, one of the huge sins of the USA
With the recent death of Frank Buckles, there was an OUTSTANDING article in The Washington Post as to how our WWI vets were forgotten, reminding me of this number. This needs to be shared so it doesn't even happen again, as it did with Korea and Vietnam.
Thank you for posting this beautifully restored version. I have loved this since I first saw it on TV when I was a teenager in the 70s. It may have more meaning than when it was made in 1933.
After watching this movie I had this song stuck in my head. It's surprisingly catchy.

It's so amazing that they end the movie with this number! It was orginally to have appeared earlier in the picture. Powerful effect!

Great number, although something rings false, singing about poverty with such production value.

A musical with meaning, a musical that didn't let the audience forget. Etta Moten was magnificent in this as was Joan Blondell. Wonderul.
