I'm curious about the differences between Recon, and MARSOC. Can anyone explain these? In the Army we have Rangers (direct action), Special Forces (foreign internal defense), and Delta (counter terrorism). They're very different but have overlapping capabilities. Is Army SF a counterpart to MARSOC? Would Rangers be more aligned with Recon?
@discofishing I'm not a Marine, but as far as I know, Marsoc is part of socom, and recon is a special operatios(capable) force, split up into division recon, and force recon, and alot of the old force recon guys went to marsoc
@discofishing MARSOC is in SOCOM. yes they are basicly the marine counter part to SF. marsoc does direct action, foreign internal defence, and more. so basicly there there incase all other SOF are deployed. as many arguements this will cause. marsoc is a cash cow for the marines. they have no specific role like the other sof does. because they dont believe any marine is more elite than the other. so in the end its a positive.
@SuperSoldier4Freedom I do not understand is why US Army Rangers are part of SOCOM, but USMC Force Recon is not. The funny thing is Marines are allowed to go to Ranger school, but I have not heard of any Soldier going to Recon school. I spent 8 years in and worked with SOCOM and Marines, but nobody could really explain this to me.
@discofishing Another thing, why does the US Army have a Combat Divers course? It sounds like there's probably some Rangers out there that may have equal or better maritime skill sets than Recon Marines. I'm all for joint operations, but there are elements of the government that want to see the Marines rolled into the Army.
@discofishing the corps are too proud. the legit reason is they dont believe any marines are more "elite" because the entire usmc is elite. they left forecon (force recon) out of socom so they dont have any second hand marines. that eventually backfired and the made MARSOC. everybody in the military and allied nations are allowed to try out for ranger school.
@SuperSoldier4Freedom What do we mean by elite? There's a strong maritime capability outside of the USMC which can be found in the Navy, Army, and Airforce. I'm not trying to troll, I am just a fan of military history. I've worked with Marine plenty of times while I was in the Army and have nothing but great things to say about them.
@SuperSoldier4Freedom I think it's just an expeditionary/QRF type mindset required to perform the job. Marines are not always "first to fight". I can't really think of a conflict/war where they were first to in. From what I've read, the idea is to have a couple of MAGTFs circling the globe, waiting to be called into action. I will say Marines are very special in that they have the assets of an entire military; tanks, infantry, artillery, support, air, etc.
@SuperSoldier4Freedom exactly! we are all elite in the Corps, I never met a Recon Marine who thought he was better than another Marine, in fact, most Force Recon always return to their combat units.
@discofishing MARSOC is relatively new only a couple years old and they are very similar to Army SF with their abilities to train and assist foreign fighters along their language & cultural skills.
@discofishing you need to know that the commandant always wants the Corps to be autonomous and work alone, MARSOC is the new Force Recon to do shit secretive for the Marines in combat units, the Marine Corps fights alone and MARSOC supports the missions, and MARSOC is harder than armyrangers or even special forces, join to fing out more...
@77musica Harder than SF and Rangers? In what ways? I'm a soldier, so obviously I'm going to have some bias, but the idea is to cut through that stuff. What benefits would the USMC gain by being autonomous? They are part of the Navy, for one. I can sight several instances where the Corps relies heavily on other branches. So lets put the pride down and speak on terms of history and facts.
@discofishing Bro, I am not going to discuss facts that I have no powers over, this is the way the Marine Corps is and performs, call the commandant if you have questions or dislikes.
@discofishing Force Recon was the Marines main recon/direct action/counter-terrorism force but since Force Recon wasn't a part of SOCOM they sometimes sat on the sidelines. So the USMC formed MARSOC which is their contribution to SOCOM. Most of the MARSOC guys came straight from Force Recon and the rest of the Recon guys that didn't go to MARSOC stayed in Recon. MARSOC then took on DA and Counter-terrorism and Force Recon was freed up to focus on deep recon.
@weaponsahhweapons26 So it seems there's some overlap in skill sets and capabilities between MARSOC and Recon. Appears to be similar to what the Army has with Rangers and Special Forces/Delta Force. I think Force Recon needs to be part of SOCOM. Marines have always struggled for funding more than the other branches. This would help, I think. If Rangers are part of SOCOM, so should Recon.
How do you become marsoc?
