  • This was informative however, autotune is on almost on everything and even just the subtle key issues can be corrected. Its there, you just don't know it.

  • I don't think you should be talking about autotune when you're jump cutting like a lazy shit.

  • @labtec514 that is not laziness

  • @wingwaabuddha Jump cutting is the laziest form of video production ever but I can see that you're also one of these faggots that has some bizarre thought in their head that suggests it looks decent.

  • wow i didnt know that most artist use autotune one i know doesnt is bryan adams he has such a great voice he doesnt need it. Thanks for the info.

  • i shouldnt say its "worrying" and its been about before 1997! im a DJ and dance music has been using it since the late 80's.. this guy maybe stumble across another way of doing it, but people have been any to manipulate sounds in a professional studio for years

  • Chuck Norris killed autotune

  • ... these people are no less creative than computer animators. Though, we are aware of this as being computer animated, so again as long as we know these song are auto-tuned or synthetic and be aware that is the reason for it being so good then I think its fine.

  • Another thing that in a way relates to this, "singing synthesizers". If you don't know what they are then basically, a person has been recorded talking (or something) and then the software can use the pre-recorded voice to create music, people can change the tempo, pitch etc and make their own songs using this software. It is getting progressively better. In a way though, the people who use this software to make songs is not untalented - they come up with the lyrics, tune etc....

  • I think it all depends on how it's used and for what reason. If it's being used in minor ways, like correcting a note that the artist doesn't have time to correct themselves then it is understandable; a lot of writers these days use spell-check which isn't really that different. People can make mistakes, if there is a quick way to fix it then it may as well be taken. If however, auto-tune is being used to the extreme to create effects and such, people should be warned at the very least.

  • Is "good singing" really a priority though? or is it about enjoyable art?

  • I think auto-tune in small doses is alright but mainstream artists these days seem to rely on it waaaaaaay too much.

  • (cont.) ...an artist. It's why I refuse to listen to most mainstream music anymore. Not because it's NOT catchy. But it's over-produced, and generally for that reason, not "personal" and bit shit, if we're being honest.

Perfect example, I think: Miley Cyrus. Mediocre talent. Over-produced. Bad role model.

But what can we do? So long as a majority of people realize that true music is genuine creation, I don't think we should worry too much about auto-tune taking too much hold. Good music hides!

  • Haha! "Believe" was my jam at the turn of the millennium, back when everyone was convinced that if the world didn't end at midnight when the clocks struck "00", then we'd spend the next ten years wearing insane futuristic updo's, glittery makeup, and silver spandex... right.

Auto-tune. I have major issues with auto-tune outside the realm of general studio production as well. If you're fabricating your art to the point where it's not you anymore, then no, you shouldn't be calling yourself...

  • I can't stand auto tune, I would much rather listen to a genuine singer who does hit a few bum notes, rather than the manufactured "artists" who are constantly in the charts. It just doesn't feel like they've put any work into their music as it's all done electronically anyway,

  • 2:17 no they don't deserve to be called artists !

2:37 like most of them xD

    3:27 truuuuue!

  • It's tempting to compare the use of autotune in the music industry to the use of steroids or performance enhancing drugs in the sports industry. They both improve the performance, but they do so at the expense of the performers. I think that autotune is a fine tool when used in the recording studios, because recorded music naturally emphasizes performance. Live music however is all about the performers, and by making them superhuman, autotune reduces performers from artists into mere icons.

  • Wow, this was very informative. I had a general understanding of autotune but really appreciate the comprehensive lesson you give. Your videos are so intelligent and thought provoking. It's wonderful :)

To some extent I'm fine with simply being entertained by music and not worrying about the "true" value of the singer as a genuine artist or not. But I do see how it can be sadly ironic when you have all these people with natural, raw talent who aren't showcased bc others w more image appeal are

  • @faerietaleredux Yeah I know what you mena, sometimes you just want to listen a good song!

  • awesome vlog XD

  • I love your vlogs. So educational. I had no idea about all this!

  • I definitely think that auto-tune is overused in most modern music. However, I am not completely against auto-tune. When artists use it as an effect, then I am totally fine with it. But if auto-tune is used to cover up the fact that someone has absolutely no vocal talent, I'm against it. My favorite band, ALL CAPS, uses a lot of auto-tune, but without it, they are still fantastic and use it because their genre is electronic. It should be used sparingly and only when necessary.
