I was about 4 or 5 when this used to air. My aunt's used to go crazy for the guy at the end ( with the speaking part), this ad popped in my head, so I looked it up, just to see if he was really so hot.... lol
I was a Junior in high school when this came out and I joined when I was a senior the next year. (DEP) Graduating BCT (D-2-1 Ft Bliss,TX) is a feeling I will never forget. Spent ten years in and dont regret one year of it. "HOOAH!"
This is the Army commercial I remember the most from my childhood. I was about 7 when this started airing. Back then the recruiting commercials were top-notch...great slogan, great music. As for me, though, I was an Air Force brat, so the Army was NOT an option for me. :-) Still, I finished growing up overseas, went to DoDDs, and I work with militiary and VA students TODAY! Once you're in the culture, it's always a part of you.
These are the army commercials I remember, and they made an impact on me. I still like them looking back and don't care if cynical types ridicule them as corny, etc. I felt there was something inspirational about them.
Hated the more recent "Army of One" slogan, but the "Army Strong" is much better.
Theres nothing wrong with saying nhey first seargant good morning.its just the soldier has a postive attitude. and shows respect towards his superiors.
@Marinemiketobe My Marine recently came back from Iraq....he worked so hard they gave him meritorious promotion to Cpl and last week got a letter of commendation from his command on family day. We are so proud of him and compliment the USMC for building him up with the world-class training. Proud parent of a Marine..
When I got to Fort Myer, VA and I was asked why I joined the Army, I answered that I liked the song. The Major says,"You liked the song, huh?"
"Yes, sir."
He says,"Well, if you like that song so much, then go on over to the Army Band building and maybe Sergeant So-n-So will sing that f'n song to you personally!!"
I was in that commercial also - Gino and I reenlisted the same day. I heard he got in trouble a while later - to clear the air - the first sergeant wasn't even out there. That was dubbed in - not even Gino's voice. We ribbed him quite a bit over that. This commercial sure invokes a lot of memories. For those of you from the old 50th. MOBSTRAC lives on ! ! !
Probably the most memorable Army Recruiting Commercial of my day. Of course, having driven the Gama Goat that they show airdropping in, I would have suggested that it would have been better to drop it without the parachute.
i jumped for this commercial, the jumpmaster is a sargeant major, he took over for Gaweda, the gamma goat they show coming down didn't drive off that lz i garuntee! when it hit the ground the wheels went up over the top of it and it was done. the one they show was on the ground already. we sat on green ramp at pope for what seemed like forever. i thought i remembered something about the rain holding us up or we jumped through fog... damned old memoery.
This is the response I want to see from our goverment, for the nation of Hati that is in need of help or be it like in New Orleans when they needed help after Katrina. Not three or four days after the Fact
Kind of Ironic...That the "Hey First Sergeant...Good Morning" guy was actually court martialed for cocaine use...Found this out while stationed at Ft. Bragg during the 80's...shortly after the commercial came out...
@bryandamadman hahahaha very true!!! after a a combat heavy drop my 1st sgt wuld be like "hey shitbag what the fuck are doing sitting down...start policing up the DZ so we can get the fuck out of here!!" lol
hahahahahahahaha hey first sergeant how ya doin :) man false advertisement. you cannot ever just greet a first sgt like that. i love these old army commercial ads they so funny and lame and i doubt any of them are real soldiers either just actors
LOL no shit! My first sergeant would've slammed my face down into the dirt while screaming in my face, "BEAT YOUR FACE, NOOKIE!!!" where I would then commence in doing pushups until my arms flew off (rather than fall off), then we'd have some fun doing "front-back-go's" in the sand, until I turned into a full sugar cookie. The music, I am DIGGIN it, man!!!
I dont understand what the comment was about getting head ripped off for saying "Good morning First Sgt".. I did my 20 and they used the term Morning ' Top" which I feel is even more chummy. That guy in the ad used the correct term. Those were the days!! I went in in77 and did my time. 101 Abn. I agree also with thye poster who mentioned where did all the dress uniforms go. I loved the Khakis..
I remember watching the commercial as a kid. I loved it. I eventually became a paratrooper in the 82d but I never got to sit around and drink coffee with my 1SG, that part is BS. Also, I think they should have said, "We do more between ) 0100 and 0300 than most people do all day.
This is the stuff that made me join the Army, the commercials, the soldiers walking around in their dress uniform (unlike now, they are go around wearing that tacky camouflage uniform. Obviously the generals don't know jack about tradition). I even still have a book cover with different Army patches! The "Be All You Can Be" slogan is definitely the best military slogan ever. "Army of One", is beyond sucky, they should execute the generals and beouracrats who approved that.
does anyone remember the other "airborne" army commerical where the guy is writing a letter to his father that says, "dear dad, yesterday we made our toughest jump" then they cut to the jumpmaster yelling.."on your feet" i don't recall them sounding off for their equiptment check. it was just "on your feet" and then "stand in the door...go" i don't recall ever hearing my jumpmaster sound that loud once the side doors were opened. ahh..the good old days at ft. bragg.
"paper Sargeant, good morning" ?,,all those years ago I was never really sure what he said but if I joined all I had to do was jump in a plane then jump out, turn the ignition on a jeep, sip coffee & BS with the sargeant, when my day was over by 9am, then time to go back to bed.
The version of the urban legend I'd always heard is he was kicked out for homosexuality. Yeah, really, who in the storied 82nd would flop his butt down with his brain bucket unstrapped like that? Chatted it up with some E-3's yesterday who had never heard "We do more before nine o'clock, etc." I felt old...

MelbaSoul, not to discredit what you say, but I have a different understanding. I thought they Army used real soldiers instead of actors for advertising. My first assignment was at Bragg 85-89 when the "today we made our toughest jump" ad was made. I "understood" the star was the driver for a BDE commander in the 82d. Looking back this seems to have about the credibility right around an urban legend, but we all believed it. That was after this ad was made so maybe the policy changed.
i spent two years at ft.bragg and i never jumped with my bdu sleeves rolled up. that always bugged me about that commercial. thats what happens when you use an 18th airborne corps slug instead of an 82nd all-american.
