  • MCarey, understand Elvis's voice can take you by surprise, particularly if you are used to lounge singers and cautious warblers .... but any singer, after a close listening, will assure you that's a voice that pitches, reaches and takes chances. The bonus is the brilliant mongrel is probably one of the best contemporary pop songwriters of his generation.

  • This guy has a horrible singing voice, but Burt Bacharach's song is so superb that a rock could sing it and the recording would sell well.

  • as a teenager growing up in the early '70's i used to think Burt Bacharach was just a corny square. but over the decades, as my musical tastes matured, i finally realised what a consummate classy master of pop he really is. and obviously that once "angry young man" Elvis Costello saw the light, too!
